7 speed s tronic upgrade to zf 8 speed?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I currently drive an standard s7, I manually paddle shift my car all of the time.

My question is, is it worth upgrading to the 8 speed zf rs7, with the rs7 I will also be paddle shift all the time, with some weekends track and spirit driving.

I read some reviews say the zf 8speed some time miss gear and change slower than dsg during manual shift. I never drive the zf 8 speed before, any advice be great.

Plus I. M just in a stage of thinking to tune and upgrade my s7 with an stage 2 tune, decat and upgrade air box, also looking to get an transmission tune ( is it still worth it if I will manually shift all the time?) or just buy the rs7 instead. I definitely will tracking it quit often and manual shift all the time, please help me thanks

I can only share my experience ... I had the DSG in by B8.5 S4 (epl stage 2 w/ DGS tune) and absolutely loved it. It was probably my favorite part of the car and for the time that I owned it - it never let me down even once. From my readings across the forum I also see that there are several S7 owners at Stage 2+ who haven't experienced any issues as yet. But something about the DSG always felt a little fragile to me at the 3.0 stage 2 power levels.

My experience with the ZF in the RS7 is that it is definitely slower and clunkier. You won't notice as much on full throttle upshifts but you definitely will with paddle shifting in day to day driving.

Do I miss the DSG? Not as much as i thought I would.

The DSG is the superior transmission for sporty driving, and especially for being shifted manually, like I also do almost 100% of the time. It shifts basically instantly, up or down. A torque converter auto can upshift rather quickly, but it'll always be slower to downshift, plus it just can't blip the throttle like a DCT can, and sounds really cool. But if you modify your car and can get over its torque limit, then that's a different story. But I also bought this car in great part because it still has a DCT. They're more expensive than torque-converter autos, therefore most manufacturers using DCTs are switching to those, now that they're quicker than before. By the way, they're also heavier, and not by a little bit. Good luck.

Is the zf good enough for track driving?

I find the ZF8 maddeningly slow to downshift. Up shifts are fine, but downshifts are slow to happen, lag when i ask for them, and clunky.
This is my first auto in 15 years and I'm not impressed.
The DSG in a loaner Q5 was light years ahead in feel and quickness.

This is so weird. I test drove a DSG Audi S4 B8.5 and 2 C7 A6 with paddle shift and there was barely any noticeable difference. I was actually unimpressed with the S4.

When you start to push that big C7....you'll notice.

I haven't done this swap, but I've done other swaps that I imagine are close to being the same. You'll need a complete wiring harness for the transmission and a TCU for sure. Most likely new driveshafts out of a ZF car. Possibly a different ECU and/or BCM ( I personally don't know how integrated they are to each other ). The last swap I did took everything but the BCM, and that was only because it was a pre 2000 car. Really the only way to make it simple enough for a guy to do in the garage is to buy the whole car with the setup you want and swap everything over. You'll go mad trying to piece it together.

I think it will be easier and cheaper if you put money aside to replace the stronic if it fails due to too much torque, rather than putting in the zf8.

The reason (that are most to be believed), is that the stronic can take 550-600nm of torque, whereas the zf8 can take a bit more.

The stronic is faster in its shifting, I am fairly sure they would have used it in the RS6/7 if they could. Porsche uses its own version of the stronic (PDK) and Audi also uses a special version of the stronic in the R8.

I had issues with my own stronic a while ago, managed to source a complete refurb for 2500€ and its been running great ever since.

So in short, if I were you I would keep the stronic, perhaps get a tcu tune and keep money aside for if the stronic gives up.

He's not asking to swap a ZF8 into his S7. He's asking if he should buy an RS7.

Between Kiwi shorthand and my apparent lack of reading comprehension I missed that.
