Exclamation Secondary Air Injection Pump Help...

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I have a B6 3.0 and I've thrown 2 secondary air injection codes (17819 & 17831). I went to the dealer (before I had a vagcom) and they informed me that the previous owner must have had problems with the pump and just unplugged it. They plugged it in and found that the pump blew the relay... but now I need to figure out where the relay is because they left it unplugged. If anyone has a picture of this pump and/or relay, or would just like to explain where it is... I would really appreciate it. Ive also been reading that people have had problems with hoses tearing or cracking coming from this pump... I'd like to check those out too and see if they are causing a problem as well. Thanks in advance!

This pump is also called the smog pump.. It adds air into the intake while the car is warming up..

The pump can be found on the underside of the car on the passenger side near the front of the car.

You can try and search for the Dual intercooler mod for pictures, since you have to move the smog pump for installation..

So I have the car in the air as I type this... looking under there, I see the pump and the wires/hoses coming off it. I traced the 2 hoses coming off it (plastic hoses) and they seem to be fine. I traced the wires through the engine bay and they run through the firewall (from what I can tell). I've searched and searched and keep finding people with broken or torn hoses... which hoses are these? Im kinda wondering if the CEL keeps coming on because maybe I just have the hose missing all together?! If anyone with a 3.0 would be so kind as to take a pic of the setup for me... I'd REALLY appreciate it. Thanks

can anobody show me a picure of the Combination valve? I've been searching and searching... no luck. I couldnt find any broken hoses coming off the air injection pump, so my next task is checking out the combo valve, and possibly replacing it (as I've read, stops working occasionally). Thanks in advance........

I have a 1.8T, and the valve I think you're looking for is at the back of the head. there a couple of small fabric covered lines attached to a small metallic canister. Check the hoses that attach to it, I found one of mine cracked at the nipple that comes off the valve. I was throwing secondary air codes until I replaced the hose. Fairly easy to do. I think this may be your problem give the codes you describe.

would the best way to find this valve be through the underside of the motor, or just looking down through the top? on the 3.0, would it be to one side or the other... or somewhere in the middle of the back? Any help would be awesome - I've searched and searched and cant find any broken hoses anywhere in the engine bay, Im just hoping I missed it. Thanks

Can you post the part numbers for #23 & #24? Thanks.

Also, I found a hose that was frayed... didnt seem to be leaking air, but the mesh stuff that its wrapped in was fraying off. I swapped out the hose with a crappy new one I had laying around but would like to get a better hose... Hopefully that was the problem. I'll keep this thread posted incase others have the same issue.

What did you ever find out about this...I think I'm having the same problem with my SA pump and would like to know if your problem was from the hoses, valves, or pump? I have an '02 3.0.

Re: Secondary Air Injection Pump Help...

The Secondary Air Injection Pump Relay, is under the drivers side dash, located in the horizontal row of relays, third relay from the right, with "373" labeled on top. If the fuse blows or the relay fails when the pump is connected, the pump rotor is likely seized up, and not free to rotate.
Also check the N112 solenoid valve on top of the engine on the back of the manifold. That valve controls the vacuum signal that opens and closes the secondary air combination valves on the back ends of the cylinder heads.

Re: Secondary Air Injection Pump Help...

If there were a problem with the SAI relay, would I hear a ticking noise coming from the left of the steering column? I threw the P0491 and P0492 SAI codes a couple of days ago, and I am trying to track down the cause. It sounds like the SAI pump is running at cold start (sounds like a jet for about 30 seconds). The CEL hasn't come back, but I'm not holding my breath....

A malfunctioning relay may or may not click, it depends on the specific failure mode occurring. (electrical/mechanical) If the relay primary coil winding is open or shorted, then the relay cannot respond, thus no click. If the failure is mechanical, the contacts actuated by the relay coil are burned, or contaminated, then the relay will "switch state", (can be felt by touching the case, if not audible,) but the connected electrical load/device will not be energized, etc.

Your DTCs, are for Low Secondary Air Flow, right and left cylinder banks. Check the N112 solenoid valve for proper operation, (de-energized, no air flow through N112,) and the N112 vacuum supply hose from the vac reservoir, and the control vacuum hoses from N112 connected to each Combination Valve located on the back ends of the heads. Also check the SA hose/s from the SAP to the Combination Valves.

The PN is moulded or printed on the relay, it is relay location number "373" , but that is not the PN. If I find that PN, I will post it.

I think I fixed my problem...one of the hoses to the air pump was disconnected! My big head barely fit under the car to see it, but the jet engine sound is definitely more subdued with the hose connected. Now on to the next issue....

Where do I start...? Let's see, pulled these codes when I cleared the CEL on Friday (in addition to the SAI codes that should not come back now):

    17887 - Brake Boost Vacuum System: Mechanical Failure P1479 - 008 - Implausible Signal

16805 - Catalyst System, Bank1 Efficiency Below Threshold
    P0421 - 001 -

The second code might be related to the loose hose I'm hoping. I do have a rough idle, so I'm wondering if I have MAF, O2 sensor, or cat issues. As for the brake booster code, I do notice that my brakes are weak right after I start the car. I also hear weird groaning noises coming from behind the dash after I start the car and after I turn it off that might be related to this. I've tried to find pics or diagrams of where the offending brake booster hose might be on a 3.0 but no luck yet.

Then, my stock xenons are pointing at the ground practically. I tried adjusting them using the screws (with the ignition off and with the key in the on position but the car off) but nothing seems to change. I only have the shareware version of vag-com, so not sure how much I can do about this...

Then there is the problem with the tiptronic that I knew about when I bought the car. Has something to do with the shift cover (already removed) or the circuit board, dealership quoted 300-450 to fix.

I bought this car so that my Mustang could be my project car and this could be my daily driver, but that didn't turn out so well!

Oh, and I forgot about an ETC sensor I think is going bad..still trying to find out where that one is in a 3.0 also. If anybody has any comments about any of these issues I could use all the help I can get!

So I dont think my SAI pump is working. I threw a CEL months ago when i had water in my ECU and casued cooling fan issues. I replaced the relay in the middle and the issue went away however I left the other 2 assuming that there was no problem. Anyway, i jacked up the passengerside and started the car and then climbed under the car to see if the pump was working and it wasnt. Anyway, I came accross this thread and I have a 373 relay under my ECU. Is that the same one or are there 2? I have a 1.8T

Re: Secondary Air Injection Pump Help...

The "373" relay under the dash, I assume is the same spec relay as the one in the ECU box, but I will confirm and get back to you here. OK?

I'm looking for the relay "under the dash" and am having trouble right now, Same problems above, Diagnosticator or anyone, can you help me out with this? Got the car on the jack as we speak.

Found it, the replacement relay that the dealership sold me was #643, was told it was compatible, hopefully this will help. I replaced the relay, checked all tubes, wires, doohickeys and ringdings and disconnected the negative from the battery. I'm going for a leisurely drive now to see if it has worked.

Im having this same problem....it idles really low and seems to almost vibrate a little bit at idle...it will smooth out if you give it just the slightest bit of gas....sounds like a jet engine during acceleration and at start up....and now i seem to notice a ticking sound that is really starting to sketch me out.....it threw the secondary air code once before and i had it reset...am i best off just replacing the secondary air pump and hoses or is it worth checking out the fuses....i think its shot....thanks!
