Rear trunk latch button not working- but remote & int. release work

This is a bit odd, and can't figure it out.

The trunk release (on the trunklid, above lic plate) does not open the trunk. No sound of actuator- just the click of the button but no release.

Remote control release works.
Interior trunk release works (front driv door)

If I manually push the locking mechanism up, and then press the trunk release, i can hear the actuator firing.
So, the actuator seems to be working

any ideas?

I disabled the trunk open on my car in the Mmi, now my trunk only opens from fob and door switch unless I enable it. Pervious owner could have done same or someone else, easy to diag tho remove cover in trunk undo the trunk release conector and check the resistance while pressing button should read open when not pressed and should show a reading while pressed
