    battery replacement - coding needed?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I think the OEM battery on our 2015 needs to be replaced (car will jumpstart and stay running but as soon as you turn it off it won't restart). Is any coding needed when changing out the battery?

No, that is a dead battery. Is this the stock battery and is it 2-2.5 years old? If so, that's exactly when mine had to be replaced. Go get any aftermarket one as the dealership is a waste of money.

Yes, stock battery. Any coding needed when changing it out?

No, just change it out. The car will scream at you when you start it back up, but take it for a drive and it will clear the faults and fix itself.

I had asked the same question on another forum and was pointed to this helpful video => https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_c...&v=IJAScg6JrYI

Yes - you DO need to code the car to the new battery. Unfortunately, it looks like we're pretty much stuck with an OE battery since the registration process expect to see certain batteries and characteristics.

If your car is still under warranty you can get it replaced at the dealer for free. (happened on my 2015)

That is for previous generations, the new 2015+ 8V mqbs do not need coding.

My dealership said they will only replace within 18 months of delivery as that is the battery warranty. I ended up being 2 months shy of the mark, which was maddening and $350 later.

For reference, you can get a better aftermarket battery for less than 200. AutoZone, and the like, giving you lifetime warranties too.

Over the years, have found that Interstate Batteries
make some of the best car batteries for the money and that Costco sell them for the best price. Often cheeper than AutoZone, WalMart, etc.

Care to share your source about 2015+ 8V MQB do not need coding?

Do you drive with auto start/stop enabled? A new battery every 2 years or so is somewhat retarded, IMHO.

My source is me, by changing the battery. Many others have also changed the battery to go smaller, which was my original intentions.

The oem battery just sucks and seems to be a common problem (dealership also stated). I don't have start/stop on my model.

Only thing the service manual says when replacing the battery, other than the physical replacement of it:

    Procedure
    – Connect ⇒ Vehicle diagnostic tester.
    – Select Diagnosis mode and begin diagnosis.
    – Select Test plan tab.
    – Choose Select own test and select following options one after the other:
    ♦ Body
    ♦ Electrical system
    ♦ 01 - Self-diagnosis compatible systems
    ♦ 19 - Data bus diagnostic interface - J533
♦ 19 - Data bus diagnostic interface, functions
    ♦ 19 - Adaption
    ♦ 19 - Adapt battery

The following measures are required after re-connecting the battery:
♦ Activate automatic open/close function of electric window regulators ⇒ Owner's Manual .
♦ Interrogate event memories of all control units and erase “Low voltage” entry ⇒ Vehicle diagnostic tester.

Pre facelift cars do not have a battery monitor. 2017+ does require battery adaption.

    battery replacement - coding needed?

No coding needed. Confirmed though installing a carbon battery cover and getting interrupted requiring me to leave battery off for hours. When you start the car again every single warning light comes on, every last one of them. Drive the car; all faults clear within 1 mile.

Save the coin and swap it yourself. Dealership battery, wiper blade and tire costs are a joke.

Huh, thats weird, I had mine replaced earlier this year without a problem (3 years+ after i bought the car new). Might depend on the dealer.

I will do the coding after changing the battery (No matter FL or Pre FL). There is battery data stored somewhere in the car. Maybe 19 module on the A3's case. It can be done by using VCDS. I also has a dead battery 1 year ago. Mine was a 2015 that was built in early 2014. Dealer replaced FOC under warranty.

I just replaced my battery....used VCDS to clear all the codes produced by replacing the battery....
