    Headliner repair

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hey guys,
For those of you who replaced their headliner. I am looking to replace the lining all together. I am also going to re wrap the A and C pillars as well. Is this the correct material to use? https://www.ebay.com/itm/Black-Alcan...53.m1438.l2649

What kind of glue are you guys using. I tried to use some 3M headliner glue but it didn't work so well. But i think thats because my original headliner foam was shot and it wouldn't stick.

How hard was the headliner to cover and glue? Or did you get someone professional to do it?

That should work. Remove all of the old glue from the previous headliner. Make sure you let the glue sit for a bit and tack up, maybe like 1 minute. Use something stronger for the edges.

I've used Performance Products Hi-Temp Spray adhesive, which is designed for headliners:
    https://www.rushinupholsterysupply.c...temp-adhesive/
Last time I bought it, they had the lowest cost.
For a sedan it's ~2.5 cans for the headliner depending on how heavy you spray. I'd get 4 cans to do headliner+pillars, maybe have a 5th can on hand if you plan to redo the rear deck shelf (assuming sedan).

Definitely have to clean the old foam/glue off, it creates a huge mess. 1/8" foam backed material is what I used doing my A4 a few months ago. I redone the headliner, A pillars, large sections of the C pillars, rear deck and sunroof shade. I used flocking material for the B pillars, and small sections of the C pillars because the shapes were too awkward to wrap. The 3M 90 spray adhesive has held up well so far. Last page of my project thread shows the results http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...4-Build/page11

1st of you have to know if the material you are going to use is padded to not? can it stretch or not? total thickness of the fabric.
the one that you posted looks like it doesn't stretch , and for the headliner you kinda need to fabric to stretch a bit in order to make a nice tight fit. only professional shops and tools can get away with non stretching material.
    I used this https://www.ebay.com/itm/Foam-Black-...3AMEBIDX%3AIT&
    _trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649
they also offer in oem style fabric

what you use to clean the headliner. Just a scrapper or did you use a chemical as well?

I used a brass bristle brush and a rag. The foam just rolls up.

I don't know how you applied that stuff, but with this stuff you spray both the fabric and the part you're wrapping. Also foam-backed fabric generally requires a little more adhesive than regular fabric.

BTW this has been a pretty consistent quantity of adhesive I've used on the 2 B5's and B6 I've done this work on.

yes i applied both side ..but not too much as i tested on a small piece so the glue would seep thru the other side. remember the heavier the material the more glue you need or stronger, but if the material is too heavy and too much glue you either going to get a seeping finish or over time due to gravity the material will come apart again

With the stuff I used, it doesn't come out as liquid as 3M spray adhesive, it's a bit stringy. It will of course seep through if put on too heavy but is pretty forgiving in that department. Just gotta give it a few minutes to dry a bit and become tacky.

Bumping this up to see how the various adhesives have held up over time? I don't have a compressor or spray gun but would be willing to get one if the DAP stuff is so much better than the Performance Hight Temp Trim Adhesive posted above. I REALLY don't want to have to take this headliner out again. Thanks!

Is it that big of a pain to remove the headliner and pillars? I can't find anything on YouTube on how to do this. But I read that you have to remove the windshield to get the headliner out????

As far as headliner glue, I used 3M Super 90 on my BMWs to repair the headliner and pillars, and after 6 years, still holding strong!

You can get it out the trunk. There is a tech article on AW detailing how to do it.

Well that was my problem, I was scouring YouTube instead of jumping on Google. LOL! Go ahead, flame away, I deserve it! :) Thanks!!

By the way, I need to replace the fabric on my sunroof shuttle as well. Is that a big pain to remove? I know the top glass needs to come off, and from what I have felt at the junkyard, it can be a little heavy.

The thread I linked includes the steps to remove the sunroof panel. It’s answered later in the thread.

Oh wow, he removed the b pillars too? I heard they break just by looking at them. I haven't experienced this myself, but I have been tempted to go to the junkyard and test this out and see how brittle the b pillar is. On another DIY I saw, it says the b pillar removal is optional. What is a common method folks like to do? Break the b pillar or just try and finagle the headliner out of the b pillar?
