    A5 Upper Oil Pan/Sump Removal

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hey guys,

Trying to do a DIY on a fried piston ring. I've got everything off the car and the last thing I'm having trouble with is getting the upper oil pan/sump to detach so I can get to the pistons from the bottom.

Does anyone have any experience doing this? I've removed all the visible bolts from the bottom but it seems like have to be missing some that I can't see. It just won't come off and I don't want to bang on it too aggressively.

The engine is still mounted in the car, would like to keep it that way if possible.

Car is a 2011 Audi A5 Quattro 2.0T TFSI Manual Transmission

The rear main seal is most likely whats keeping you from separating it. You'll have to remove the engine or transmission unfortunately.

Thanks for this Sep4ng. I started this project thinking that it could be done without removing the engine entirely but you're right. You can't get to to the top two bolts on the oil pan without pulling the engine out completely.

I just had this discussion this morning. On Friday I was in my indy's shop (good friend of mine). They had a VW CC (2.0t) on the lift. Trans was out and I asked about it. Showed me the two upper pan bolts. Unfortunately, they are behind the trans below the rear main. So, engine stayed in but tranny had to come out. I will stop in tomorrow and get a couple pics if they haven't put it in yet if that will help.

Here are the photos of the CC's 2.0t engine with the trans removed showing the upper pan bolt locations. (had to edit above post, the holes are below not above-memory was upside down)

    Thanks Mike!

I was really surprised to see how much force the rear main was able to handle. Not that I was going crazy but I definitely pushed harder than I should have thinking the upper pan would be completely free.

It turns out that the rings looked pretty good, although I was still burning tons of oil. It was the valves that were in the worst shape! You can see one of the exhaust valves on piston 2 (where I had no compression) is completely shot, and the rest of the valves had tons of carbon buildup. Considerable play in some of the valve guides as well.

116,000 or so. Well outside of any extended warranty but too soon for this bs.

Appreciate that, never a good time for your car to fall apart but winter is particularly bad.

    I️ replaced:
Upper and lower tensioner (Guides and chain all looked good so I️ left them)
Water Pump (This was shot too)
    Piston rings
    Rod Bearings
All valves, valve guides, seals etc.

Hoping to get the engine back in the car this weekend.
