New Q5 owner - how to stream bluetooth audio?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Picked up a 2010 Q5 Premium Plus 3.2L w/ S-line package earlier today. Trying to figure out how to stream bluetooth audio on the built in MMI setup. I come from much simpler cars and feel special-ed using this interface (at least day one).

The car has navigation with the little black joystick in the center and two SD card slots in the dash. I think this configuration is called "MMI 3G Navigation" ?

Either way- is there a built in or add-on way for me to stream bluetooth audio? I've looked at some youtube videos that seem to point to options on menus that I don't have. I've looked at Dension's website and it seems like they don't offer a plug in unit that does A2DP.

Do I need to update the software on the MMI? If so are there any websites/tutorials for this?

Is there an aftermarket plug-in unit that has bluetooth audio streaming capabilities with steering wheel controls and text to display?

    Thanks!

Should work. Just pair the phone and choose the source as your phone after that. You will need to start what your playing in the phone but just pair it first. Then it becomes more obvious

Doesn't have all the bells and whistles like that, but it plays.

I have a 2010 A4 3G mmi high and it doesn't play music via Bluetooth.
    My 2014 Q5 does though.
But the q5 has a different interface and also button layout. Q5 has 4 buttons on the sides while A4 has 6 buttons.

    Congrats on the new purchase!

I purchased this for my ‘10 and plugs right into the AMI in the glove box. It’s works ok, however the quality is pretty good. It has its gremlins, but works well enough for the price.

Yep, as mentioned above- no bluetooth streaming capability from the factory until MY2013 (B8.5).

The Bovee unit is your best bet.

    Thanks for all the responses!

That's unfortunate. I was mislead by an Audiworld article to think that if the Q5's came with navigation it came with A2DP support. Too bad maybe that is just related to Q7's.

Not saying you guys are wrong-- I know you're right!

I read a lot of reviews concerning the Bovee interface. Concerned that it really wants to integrate with the built in Music app on iOS, whereas I'm interested in using Spotify only. Anytime the built in music app starts playing the U2 songs that Apple decided I needed on my phone makes me want to burn all my Apple products immediately

If you guys use Spotify do you have song readouts on either display or steering wheel controls for next/previous track?

I use tune2air and I have the same problem that is starts playing the same annoying song that is in my Music app. I read that I could disable music of using my cel data and that I could remove all songs from my app (as I only use Spotify anyway) so I’m going to test tomorrow :) - the logic behind the suggestion makes sense !

Regarding your other question, if I press next on the steering wheel or the car button it used to switch to Apple Music - for some reason it does not go next on Spotify :(

You can disable the U2 songs somewhere in the itunes settings. Google it and you'll find millions of other dissatisfied customers who didn't want a random U2 song in their collection.

As a workaround for the Bovee unit auto playing the first song in your playlist, you can download/make a blank song, and have it named to be the first track on your playlist. That prevents listening to the same annoying song every time you start the car. Mine was Audioslave - Be Yourself for months... I made my first song "Audi Bluetooth Music" and is 10 minutes of silence. There's a track available in iTunes for this specific purpose called “A a a a a Very Good Song” for $0.99. However, I downloaded mine via other unscrupulous methods ;).

I usually play Pandora without difficulty. Using the steering wheel controls AND the MMI next/previous track buttons will auto change whatever is playing back to iTunes music. I have to hit the next button on my phone to skip a track.

Can't skip tracks from the steering wheel when BT streaming. Biggest drop of the ball as far as tech goes IMO. All it would take is simple next/previous track selections on the DIS using the scroll wheel just like non-BT media

I would spend the few extra dollars and get the Coolstream CarPro. That's what I have in my 2012 Q5 right now. https://www.amazon.com/Bluetooth-Ada.../dp/B017RVHSSQ

FWIW Apple Watch controls Spotify extremely well while streaming Spotify from your phone. Works great and I don’t care at all that the buttons on the wheel/console
