Whats your favorite car battery !?

Can I take a biased swing at this?

I manage the Interstate Batteries in Toronto, Canada (its pretty damn cold up here right now!).

Our batteries aren’t the cheapest, and I don’t have an issue saying that, but I can assure you, you get what you pay for. Quality and service above all is what I’m talking about. Good American made product at that.

When it comes to a consumer’s peace of mind, I can only say that our warranties are, above all, no-hassle and simple to take care of (if anyone ever has an issue, please don’t hesitate to connect!).

We rotate all of our stock consigned out in the field and make it our mission to supply the end user with fresh batteries.

Our cars take some pretty high end batteries, for all their high end needs, and it’s all in what you know when it comes to selecting the right one.

Climate, proper application and preventative maintenance play into a battery surviving a long time. You’re golden if you get 3-5 years.

If anyone has any questions regarding batteries, tech or where to find them I’m here to serve!

    Insider info:

Bosch, EverStart, Diehard and Duralast batteries are essentially lower end Interstate Batteries. Same manufacturer, different brands with slightly different, albeit, weaker internals.

When I bought my B5 it had a 9 year old Interstate in it. When that battery went I got another one with an 84 month warrenty with it. I think it was free replacement in first 36 months then prorated after that. I could be wrong, I’m sure Morth would know.

Naturally, all battery companies have battery manufacturers that make our batteries for us.

With our Interstate line, we instruct how they’re to be built with the precise internals we want and then go out to market with them.

The Bosch product is a cheaper Johnson Controls made battery, almost similar to ours, but it’s what inside that counts and the warranty thereafter.

    9 years?! Nice!

You’ll experience colder temps up in PA like I would here, so that’s abnormally awesome.

Our warranties are the same in the USA as they are up here in Canada. You’d be correct.

Cool thing is that you NEVER need an invoice EVER to get a warranty done no matter where you are. Even down there if you bought it up here!

    North American warranty FTW.

If you want a good ‘standing life’ battery, given you’re not driving everyday, opt for an AGM variation of what’s installed presently.

AGM technology offers a year shelf life or more (given they’re solid state batteries) as opposed to their conventional counterparts with a 3-5 month span before they should be looked after with a decent 12-24 hours charge.

For the price and warranty the Evermaxx is my favorite. I recently had mine for my Audi replaced (warranty) after 2 years and 11 months. I run my electric fan on a thermistatically controlled switch in the AZ heat, and it still lasted almost three years. They are wired to run even when the car is off too. Decided to wire them that way with the F21 and the turbo blankets I have installed that keep a lot of heat in (obviously).

Just take a voltage meter with you when you pick one up as I've heard of people picking up dead ones on the Odyssey forums. I haven't had an issue.

While I haven't bought a battery for my B5 yet (new batt when purchased, won't mention brand but it's pretty Canadian) I have bought a few for my trucks in the past.

At my own risk I'll offer my opinion. I've really got my money's worth from Kirkland branded batts, don't know who actually makes them though. I have a couple in my 12V Cummins and they have never let me down. I know a lot of people running interstate around here and I would be willing to give them a try, especially since there is a store just around the corner form my office.

Also I should mention that our '07 VW City Jetta purchased in Dec. '06 still has the factory battery in it. But I understand why OEM Audi wasn't an option for this discussion lol.

East Penn batteries are great, OE supplier for a lot of companies, made in the USA. (Brands like Powerstride and Deka etc)

Batteries made in Mexico like Johnson Controls batteries for example (with brands like Interstate, AC Delco, Duralast etc) suck in general.

AGM for me. I refuse to use archaic battery technology, when Absorbed Glass Mat batteries are by far in a way more stable with better longevity.

I would mostly agree except i have a AGM that is only 5 years old and i can't get it to fully charge and I pulled a wetcell battery off the shelf in the garage, revived it by using the salt method that people are talking about now and it only cost me a couple $ and that battery is working great and its 7 years old. I guess my point is that because its old doesn't mean its bad.

Three of those five are store brands, they are not batteries. The chain stores all contract out for batteries, and they often will vary from one part of the country to another, because of shipping costs. For instance, in MD they can get batteries from East Penn/Deka with half the shipping cost compared to JCI in Texas, or a west coast manufacturer. My local battery distributor has a large set of shelves, stacked with labels, and if a car dealer calls for a battery, he slaps on the right "OEM" brand label and voila, delivers an OEM battery.

Which is why an Audi-OEM "Bosch" battery in the US in really really unlikely to be made by Bosch in Germany, even if the contract specifies a similar product.

So, to really compare? You have to find out who is supplying what locally. While they are not the absolute finest, Sam's Club often has very good batteries (from the top makers, hiding under other stickers) at very good prices. Sam's and WalMart also have excellent warranties, although getting seven years on any battery is most unusual.

For a car that's not a daily driver, I'd say to go AGM. (Flat plate AGM, not Optima.) You'll pay about 20-30% more, but they are designed to have much lower self-discharge, and can go much longer between charges, without the sulphating damage that wet lead batteries all take. That's just the physics of it, companies that make both kinds will tell you, AGM is better at "sleeping".
It followed me home. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Fast look for "Autocraft Gold" online, and the picture shows a wet lead battery:
    https://shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/...65-2/2040468-P

Not that I doubt you, just that "Autocraft Gold" is meaningless. "Maintenance-free" has also been a standard term, since the 1970's, meaning a wet lead battery with a sealed case, so any electrolyte that vaporized was trapped, in theory, and prevented from boiling off. It is NOT the same as "Sealed Valve Regulated" which would mean an AGM (or gel or lithium) battery. And yes, the battery guys try to confuse buyers about that.

Advanced Auto Parts owns the Autocraft name, and they get batteries from Gould and JCI and a number of other sources, depending on location and contract bid. Typically, their better goods have their better warranties, and highest prices. But you can never tell from one year to the next, one store to the next, who made that battery. And in the US? Batteries sold in the north, have a different electrolyte than the ones sold in the south, where heat is a bigger issue. So even "the same" brand name battery will vary from place to place.

The real manufacturer code, and the actual production date code, are also normally hidden under the sticker on the side of the battery. Hard to sneak a peek without defacing the goods.

    Fun, isn't it?

your discussion brings up some really interesting discussions. Mainly that you don't know what you're getting a lot times on just about anything you buy nowadays. I was doing a search on what companies make brake rotors that are not made in China. its getting pretty hard to find. That's just one example. If you don't care then its a moot point.

As the hustlers in the ball park used to say, "Scorecard, scorecard, get your scorecard! Can't tell the players without a scorecard!"

And, you can't find a scorecard these days any more. Everyone uses contract jobbers, and so many of those cheat everyone. Rotors, yeah. I should take up smoking, so I can make sure to sell the car when the ashtrays get full.

"I've heard you can student ID to any college with an auto department and use the student discount at 'orighlee's'." Turns 149$ into 68. If I'm not mistaken it's the largest **mark up**they have. They're unsurd. I've heard of people also draining battery acid and adding baking soda to neutralize thus kill a battery leading to a warranty replacement if for say you can tell it's gonna kick over soon after your warranty ends. Use proper safety equipment and in not condoning that..

To answer the real question.. I couldn't really care less as long as it's cheap.

A waste of good baking soda. You could just dump electrolyte, add water, and kill the battery that way. Even simpler, just leave your headlights on till it goes dead. If you take a conventional SLI battery down to TOTALLY DEAD as few as 4-6 times, it will usually be totally dead forever after. No tampering with chemicals needed.

Of course, karma might come back and get ya.

And while some of the coupon sites claim there are 50% coupon specials at O'REILLY AUTO PARTS, none of them seem to check out, and apparently Google is censoring any mention of student discounts when I search for them. Got a link? Or just a friend of a friend? (Because 50% is usually under cost, and that ain't gonna happen too often.)
It followed me home. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I wrote a biography but unnecessary. Find an employee that doesn't look like a sheep. A fun nice person which honestly is not many of them (in my general area) and that's not taking about the store I prefer. Find out what a student ID number is and then scramble it, pull up some way of convincing them to your current enrollment, and well.... If that doesn't work try next shift or a different store. Baking soda is excessive and you may no longer have eyeballs after, but one and done dead never coming back, not a "ugh it's showing a specific gravity of 1.241, so we're gonna charge it over night and see". VS....

And fwiw yes I'm a 'student ' going on what sends like 80 years now, but not in the department they want.

I don't really have any orighlee's around but I do have my student ID college from 2009 lol worth a shot haha.
