ABS and Traction control light on dash help

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Sorry if this is an old issue as I have read lots of similar posts and would like some clarity.

The ABS and traction control light does not come on straight away but after I drive for a few miles. I first thought it was the brake switch, I have removed and cleaned off the dirt build up on the contacts inside, it seemed to help for a couple of days but the lights come on still so it could be I need a new brake switch.

    Questions:
If the dash lights do not come on straight away, does this rule out a faulty ABS sensor? Or could one of the wheel sensors need replacing, if so how to tell which one does?

The other thing is, I adjusted the steering column slightly and is seems that since then the ABS and traction lights come on, it may be the angle sensor perhaps?

    Thanks

Had the same issue when I bought my car. Topped off the brake fluid and it went away. When I initially looked at it, it looked full but it still took a fair amount of fluid. I know there are other causes, however this worked for me. Best of luck.

Could be a lot of things bro.
Diagnose with your vag or vas.

For me i solved mine by seperating my abs wire which were bridged at the time.

Your best bet is to get the car scanned and determine the issue.
As you already listed, it could be ABS sensor, ABS module, brake switch, angle sensor etc. Don't waste money replacing parts that aren't broken.

I just pulled the lever as normal and pulled the steering wheel out?

Thanks for the comments, I will check with scan tool and see what happens.

I had the same issue. Vag com pointed to Front left speed/ABS sensor. Some more research led me to the fact that this error is the ABS control module itself more times than it is the speed/ABs sensor.

Put I new ABS control module in and coded it to the car...no joy.

Turns out it was indeed my speed/ABS sensor, just like VAG Com said ;)

So I bought a brake sensor as there was a sale on and it was worth a try for £8 ! but still the ABS and traction control lights came on.
So I got home, plugged in the lap top and it appears that the rear right ABS sensor is open and faulty code #00287 as below :

Address 03: ABS Brakes Labels: 8E0-614-517.LBL
    Controller: 8E0 614 517
    Component: ABS/ESP front 4529
    Coding: 04499
    Shop #: WSC 00672
    VCID: E5BDB2976C79
    1 Fault Found:
00287 - ABS Wheel Speed Sensor; Rear Right (G44)
30-00 - Open or Short to Plus

I went to remove it but the small bolt is corroded and I will have to drill it out now !!

I'll try an easy-out drill bit first and see if this grabs it, heli-coil is a good idea so i'll get some.
PS when you removed the sensor did you need to replace it or just clean it hopefully !? If you had to replace it was it easy enough I've read that you need to lift the back seat for the connection.

My first attempt for broken of screws and bolts is always a left hand drill. It often spins it right out. If not, you've got a hole for your easy out.

No problem. And don't forget to run your drill in reverse.

I was just removing mine to get the spindles out out; so I didn't actually replace the sensor...sorry.

But if cleaning it doesn't work, I'd be inclined to solder & heatshrink a new one to the old line..I remember how that harness went into the nowhere and feeling lucky..

I replaced the ABS sensor, it was a pig of a job and took me 5 hours !

The sensor its self was well and trully stuck and corroded in place. I had to drill it out along with the bolt. I needed to remove the caliper and disk to get into the sensor properly to allow me to drill it which took me about 2.5 hours.
Then the worst part was trying to find the damn plug connector for the other end of the sensor in the car, I know it was behind the rear panle (my car is a cabriolet) however I just couldn't find it and in the end had to remove the rear seat and trim completely eventually finding it buried and cable tied at the back. The next challange was to feed the new cable through from the underside which involved removing a bottom panel then using a piece of metal wire to locate and pull through.

Once all done I then had to put the car all back together which if anyone has a cabriolet may know how tricky the rear panel can be !

End result is that the problem has been fixed, although I did strip a wheel bolt when I put the wheel back on !
