Real-world experience with 275 tires on OEM 20" wheels of C7.5 S6

Hi all,

I've been searching high and low for information on this, and unfortunately all I've been able to locate is a bunch of information on S7s, or S6s with aftermarket wheels of various offsets. What I'm interested in is whether or not the stock 20" wheels on the 2016+ S6 can support a 275/35-20 tire (stock is 255/35-20). In the springtime the winter wheels/tires will come off, and my stock Pirellis are near their end of life, so new tires are needed. I'd like to go a bit wider, and I'm interested in understanding what will fit. If you've done +width on stock 20" wheels, photos of your setups would be very helpful too.

IMO, 275s are too wide to run on an 8.5" wheel.

For what it is worth on my S6 I run 275/30/21s on my OEM 21" 5 Arm Rotor wheels which are 9" wide.

275 is usually for 9" wide to say 10.5" wide. For 8.5 265 would be the widest. But that is just my experience on this and past cars.

It will make it floaty and the cornering will be mushy and feel imprecise. I would stick to 255 for now. I went to 265 and 9.0" wheel and great balance between ride quality and cornering.

Here is a 275/35-20 Michelin Pilot Sport AS 3+ on Hartmann Replicas ... but they are 9" wide. 9 to 9.5 is about perfect. It would be pretty squished on an 8.5" rim.

I run 275 continental dws06 on my stock s7 20's in the winter. OEM is only 10mm smaller tread (265) but adds $150 per tire. The difference is moot.

Aren't stock S7 wheels wider than stock S6 wheels? No way I would put 275s on an 8.5" wheel. The contact patch won't sit square on the road. 275s would work best on a 9.5-10" wide wheel. An 8.5" wide wheel works best with a 235-255 tire.

I'm not sure but I thought they were 8.5" wide.

My A7 has the 20x9” forged Fuchs, and I am running Nokian Zline 275/35s. They sit flush on the wheel and sidewall doesn’t have distortion.

275 vs 255 is not that large of a width increase. 2 cm or about 3/4” wider. Only on same bar and and model. There are many variations in tire profile for same size. Some are wider and square at tread edge block and some are more rounded.

You could run 275 on the factory rim, however if you were to run that wide I would recommend moving down a series to 30 vs 35, this will keep the sidewall firmer and reduce side to side play when cornering, it also should keep your tire size within 2% of what you have now. Check out www.willtheyfit.com and you can plug in the numbers of each tire/wheel set up. I see youre in Seattle, do you ever do any of the meet ups? Beautiful car BTW!!

Thanks for the input man - much appreciated. I may just end up sticking with stock sizing but go with better tires (Michelin PS4S).

I've not attended any meet ups yet, but I would like to. Would be cool to see what others have around the area.

Some actual calculations for anyone still looking at this... overall difference appears negligible, but provides .3" more sidewall to deal with poor road conditions, as well as .8" in additional width, and .6" in diameter (see attached).
