So my son rear ended someone on his 07 jetta, insurance Co wants to total it even though damage is mostly cosmetic.....

I started looking for another car and I came across this one, http://www.alamotruckcenter.com/inve...iptronic--2016

They mentioned doing the timing belt at that price...

    What do you all think?

Have them provide the carfax and check the rest of the history.
Timing belt and carbon cleaning are key maintenance services to be done on the 2.0 motor

not sure on price...here are my initial thoughts...

    - Looks like a safe buy....if you're handy with tools
    - Auto....never had an audi auto.....not sure if the tip has the best reputation
    - halogen headlights are a bummer
    - Tan interior isn't my favorite
    - Looks entirely stock so cam follower should be fine
    - Does it come with any maintenance records.....oil changes are crucial on the 2.0...need good oil always topped up so the follower is lubricated
    - At these miles you'll be coming up on a coolant flange replacement....vacuum pump replacement
    - I'd do the fuel filter, rear diff fluid, motor mounts, snub mount....not sure about a tranny mount on the tip
    - the dreaded glove box hinge will fail (easy fix if you're handy)
    - seat backs will fall off soon....also easy fix if you're handy
    - other things that I replaced around then were the N80 (simple...keeps fuel tank fumes out of intake until they should be there) and the clutch switch (fixed my cruise control not working)
    - make sure they do the thermostat at the same time as the timing belt.
    - there are other things I've done before they failed but I had deferred maintenance.

BTW....I'm at 209k miles and have zero complaints....if you take care of these babies they're generally good cars.

    The early 06 are more
problematic. So try to get service record if possible. I have a late 07 and have done everything on the list mentioned above LoL. 121k miles

At 96k miles the cam follower is most certainly NOT safe, even if the car is stock. I wouldn’t purchase the car unless there was record of the cam follower being replaced, or you’re okay with repairing the fuel pump, replacing the intake cam, and possibly having damage to your cylinder head.

Honestly I would not recommend this car for your son unless either you or your son are handy with a wrench or have pretty deep pockets. 100k is when a lot of things start to go/need replacing and I would imagine you would want your son to have a bit more of a reliable ride.

True enough....when I bought something for my daughter i didn't even think about something like this....went straight to civic/corolla/scion...something with a timing chain and a bullet proof drive train. Couldn't be happier to almost never work on it.

Yeah the cam follower is a crap shoot in these cars regardless of maintenance.
Not to mention oil pump and chains.

When you check the carfax, make sure you don't see any signs of oil consumption tests. Not sure if they still do but the B7s will have it reported by the dealerships most of the times. Also, a BIG must is take a look at the exhaust. If both the in and outer portions of the tips are covered in carbon - run like the wind. Seriously, you don't want to mess with an oil burner no matter what deal you are presented. You'll be chasing it for the rest of the ownership. The less the build up the better!
