    B9 Audi S4 vs 2017 340i xDrive - Straight Line Pull Results

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Just did a few pulls against my friend's 340i xDrive and was pretty disappointed by the results.

    1st Pull - 0 to 100mph: 340 won by 2 car lengths
    2nd Pull - 10mph - 75mph: 340 won by 1 car length
    3nd Pull - 20mph - 120mph: 340 won by 1 car length
    4rd Pull - 40mph - 100mph: 340 won by 1 car length

I know that winning in a straight line isn't everything...but the S4 has more power on paper (354 vs 320) and both cars were stock (both also weight about the same) and there was not even a moment where I had any advantage. Any thoughts on this? Maybe its the TCU, as mentioned in another thread or possibly the fact the 340 is water cooled (im not sure if the S4 is)? Also this was done in Denver where the altitude is 5280 feet.

Interesting results. Regarding the power figures, the B58 engine in the 340 is vastly underrated; it makes around 330whp and 340wtq at the wheels in the standard RWD 340i. There have only been a couple of B9 S4 dynos but they seem to put down ~300whp.

That said, C&D instrumented both an X-Drive 340 and the B9 S5, and the S5 was quicker, so not sure what to think. Overall, it seems like the cars were pretty close which I'd expect given the fact the 340i is quite underrated as mentioned above. Cooling shouldn't make a huge difference if it's cold out.

    340i X:
Zero to 60 mph: 4.9 sec
Zero to 100 mph: 12.0 sec
    Standing ¼-mile: 13.3 sec @ 104 mph

    B9 S5:
Zero to 60 mph: 4.3 sec
Zero to 100 mph: 10.9 sec
    Standing ¼-mile: 12.9 sec @ 107 mph

Audi lists a curb weight of: 3858 lb https://www.audiusa.com/models/audi-s4

    BMW curb weight: 3858/3803 lb (auto/manual) http://www.bmwusa.com/Standard/Conte...fications.aspx

If your friend was running 15 gal less fuel than you, that could provide a ~90 lb weight advantage.
S4 engine is definitely water cooled, turbo appears to be as well.
Were you in dynamic + sport mode? Your results are interesting, on paper the S4 should be quicker.

I've done a few pulls against a 340 highway speeds even stand still, rolling from 30 and it pulled from me for about a car length but then it was over. I was toying with the car all the way to Rockland plaza from NJ. That's a good 20-25 Miles to get up there and there was no competition m Granted we both filled up at the same time before heading north so the gas analogy from above may hold true to why you experienced the 340 to pull on you

Interesting, maybe a difference in tuning at altitude thing? Running in Dynamic/Sport makes a huge difference in initial throttle response too. I ran into one in the wee morning hours a month or two ago, we stopped at a light side by side to go straight up an on-ramp to the freeway. He looked over and smiled and started revving so I held LC for the light and it wasn't even close, I was waaaay ahead. He came back up on me on the freeway and we slowed down to about 60 and both took off again and I stayed a car or two in front till we shut down. He never gained, was also at around 1K ft above sea level though.

I've also driven a non-xdrive 440i and it didn't feel like it had the same mid and top end pull that the S4 does, but it didn't feel way outclassed either. Could be a difference in drive modes + altitude tuning.

the 4.4 0-60 must be with the "LC" method building boost and then launching from a stop. I would find it very hard to believe a 340 would stand a chance in that scenario. Without launching from a stop I would still expect the S4 to be faster, but probably not by much. They are direct competitors at similar price points, so to expect one to be much faster than the other will never happen, but they should be competitive with only slight variations in conditions and driver skill making the difference.

Yes, but intercooler is air to air.

Are those 340i DCT? If so I’d say that’s why they have the upper hand but I wouldn’t say by much I’d have to see it for myself and be disappointed haha

As is the intercooler on the 340. I'm not really sure what water-cooled feature garybusey was referring to.

    The 340i / B58 uses an air-to-water intercooler.

Just remember that the results that you posted are from a 6 speed manual 335XI. The auto or DCT is quicker. I am not in favor of one or the other but I am just saying. Now days the 6 speed manuals are the slowest of any combinations..it has been like that for a solid 10 years now..
8V RS3 [email protected] mph (ran a few 11.7s stock and ran 118+mph several times)
8Y RS3 k&N filter ran [email protected] (ran 11.6 5 times and trapped 120+ several times)

I recently bought a 340i with the M performance power and sound kit (MPPSK). Its a tune and full valved exhaust straight from the factory. It brings the 340i up to 355 HP and 369 tq. IF the car had MPPSK you wouldnt stand a chance. Most of the dynos coming back with this setup are showing around 350 WHP and 370WTQ. IT really makes the car a beast, I've done many pulls against my buddies new c43 amg coupe and at every instance i walk away (he is showing from the factory 360hp and 360tq or somewhere in the neighbourhood).

If the cars exhaust was very loud he likely had the MPPSK
