Disappointed with MPG of my S3

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hey all,

First, let me say that I know that most of us didn't buy our S3's because they were great on gas. However, I have to say, I am not super happy getting only around 22 mpg on my stage 2 car. Audi appears to claim 23 city and 31 highway stock . My commute is mostly highway (80 mph cruising) so it's not like I'm sitting in bumper to bumper traffic.

Also, for comparison, my previous car was an 06 Evo IX and it made over 360 awhp / tq lightly modded on the stock turbo and I was averaging roughly 24-25 mpg per tank. I know it's not apples to apples but both are turbo 4 cylinders and awd (although the Evo was full time awd).

Am I crazy to expect higher mileage?

automatic transmission would probably be the difference between your evo and s3, i would imagine. ya it sucks and also the fact that the gas tank is so small.

Yeah I’ve found somewhere around 55 is the most efficient speed, the farther you stray the worse the mileage will be

Fair enough. I'll try cruising at 65-70 this tank and see what kind of mileage I can get.

With the ZF8 the stage 2 3.0T in my q is pretty good. I can get 26/27mpg if I'm trying. Usually around 24mpg on a road trip, but if I'm cruising over 75 it goes down pretty fast. 21~22mpg

Disappointed with MPG of my S3

3200 miles on the car, Denver commuting (lots of highway), lifetime average: 19.8. I️ do accelerate hard often though.

Check your tire pressures. There is a sweet spot for the fuel mileage. Too high and too low can significantly dent the highway MPG.

I work about 2 miles away from my place, lots of traffic lights. That's usually about the area where I drive and it's almost impossible for me to get more than 17mpg, even when I'm not stepping on it that hard I'm disappointed, to say the least. Fill up every 5-6 days.

The highest mileage I have ever gotten was 28.5MPG and that was on a my road trip cross country, driving through flat ass Nebraska, cruise control set to 70mph for 5 hours lol

Haven't gotten anywhere NEAR that since then.

Also got somewhere in the neighborhood of 320 miles to a tank average on that cross country drive too, which again, never been close to that since

I've resigned myself to a best of 23.5 mpg on my commute to work. I drove to VA a couple weekends ago and got just a hair over 26 mpg cruising about 70 mph. Not terrible.

OP, it’s the DSG compared to a manual. Gearing. I avg 17-18 local driving, most I seen was 27 on a 120 mile hwy drive. My B7 A4 AWE Big Turbo kit (6spd) was a freak on fuel mileage, 29-30 on hwy, but you could also stay way out of the boost and granny shift from 1st to 3rd or 2nd to 4th to aid.

I had a Prius before the S3 and I drove the piss out of it -- basically just keeping it floored the whole time -- and still averaged high 30's. That thing was an MPG beast.

As much as there is to love about this car, the ~60% plummet in mileage was and still is..... quite jarring.

Look at his speedo. You can probably do it too hanging out at 55MPH. I can get around 30MPG cruising at 75MPH

I'm happy to live so close to work (a truly rare thing in L.A.), but do envy that average/cruising ability.
