Has anyone retrofit a wireless Qi charger into their B8? I’m trying to put one in and i was thinking the best spot would be in the center console. Any ideas?

I did it in my last car, a POS mazda... It doesnt work through even the thinnest piece of plastic so just know that before you stary cutting stuff. I cut out the plastic and glued a felt piece over it, didnt look bad.

I toyed with the idea, but like you trying to find a location. May look at using a type of wireless charger that stands upright. The other concern that I haven't looked at is what type speed will it even provide.

I put one in my car... but my commute is so short, it never gets used. Hardwired a 3 amp(I think it was) 5v inverter to cigar lighter, glued coils to back of center console pocket. Added a small piece of foam to keep it against the charging area.
Keep right pass left, it's the law!!

    I picked up these:

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

    https://www.panavise.com/pages_addon...artn=75102-109

Install item number one (ball mount) on to the panavise mount.

Install the panavise mount to the dash (I think its the perfect spot).

Install the Tylt wireless charging pad onto the ball mount (the big base you see in the pic at the link is not needed when installing it directly onto the ball mount)

Rejoice at your new wireless charging pad!

It all works really well. Have used it with my old windows phone (yup they had wireless charging way before anyone) and now with my iPhoneX. I can take pics of what it looks like installed in my car if you like.

I just ordered a new case, car mount and desktop mount for my soon-to-be here iPhone X from www.ipitaka.com. The case has built-in metal plates for magnetic mounting to the Qi CD slot mount and the Qi desktop mount. I currently have a non-Qi magnetic CD slot mount and love it! Easy one-handed mounting and unmounting, yet very stable when driving (even on the track). Use code FRIEND-4M4MK7N for 10% off.

I like all of these ideas but I was looking for something more discreet that I could maybe hide in a glove box or something

So you don't want/need access to it while driving? You may be in the minority here. I don't have Nav in the car, so am constantly using Waze on my phone.

Here is a nokia charger attached to a generic amazon vent phone holder. It currently fits the note 8 with no problem.

Power is supplied by running the cable behind the LCD screen and glove box to a fuse tap. If the input is 5volts, I would have wired it to a "cigarette to USB" adapter to down step the voltage from 12v to 5v.

Wireless charging doesn't work well when there is excessive heat, like during the summer without AC running. It over heats the battery and the phone would stop charging.

This one installs right into the Cup Holder and actually fits and charges the new iPhone X without a case....

You can drill a hole into the bottom of the Cup Holder and run the wiring through the center console to conceal everything....not a bad deal for $59 either.....

Big one....you can see it pretty easily while driving if you really needed to depending on your seat position although I wouldn’t recommend it!

So it eliminated the cup holder pretty much?

Yes it eliminates the larger Cup Holder but I don’t really use that one anyway....I use the one in my door panel and sometimes use the small one....there’s another way to get wireless charging that I came up with but haven’t tried yet....I’ll post a couple of pics along with my idea in a few....

Salusy Car Center Console Armrest Box Glove Box Secondary Storage Tray For Audi A4 2009-2016/Audi A5 Coupe 2013-2016 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01M7YRXGN?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf

So depending on your car and what your Center Console space looks like this may or may not work for you but it should be pretty seamless in a B8.5 S5....

For $49 you can pick up a 3 Coil Wireless Charging Pad from ECS (1st Link) and for $15 you can pick up a Center Console Tray from Amazon (2nd Link)

You can pull out the rubber insert from the Center Console Tray and replace it with the Wireless Charging Pad and then run the wiring under the tray in the storage area below....there’s even a cutout for wires in the Center Console Tray so it should be a quick easy way to get Wireless Charging

The only potential issue is the size of the flat surface in the Console Tray being too small for your phone because there is a slightly raised lip towards the back of the tray....you can easily overcome this by measuring the phone and fitting a thin piece of plastic into the tray that the Charging Pad can be adhered to in order for the phone to lay perfectly flat on the pad

Actually the Wireless Charging Pad kit already comes with the plastic mounting base so you wouldn’t need to make your own.....you could probably just adhere it to the tray with some 3M tape

The inbay mat looks like an excellent choice but I can’t find an b8 install guide anywhere.

And does that tray interfere with the 12v in that console?

I believe you need to wire it directly....doesn’t look like it has a USB or 12V Plug

Covered by the console tray? The console tray definitely covers up whatever is under it but you will still have easy access to it and there’s a slot to run wires through if that’s your concern

When you open the center console, closest to the driver is a 12v that I don’t see a cut out for in that tray

Just FYI: It sounds like a cool idea and something fun to have, but its actually quite an asspain to use in a practical manner. If its inside your console, you have to open it to see who's calling, use nav, change songs, sext hoes, etc... It might shift while youre driving and not be charging and you dont even know it. I wired one in my old car and I rarely used it because it was a bitch

Good tip man, thanks for posting (and the code). Just ordered a red/black CF case for my iPhone 8 and the Qi CD slot mount. Seems like the perfect place to mount... who uses CDs, and it it doesn't interfere with the MMI screen.

    No problem!

Looks like they added some new colors. When I ordered a week ago, only option was black or gray. My X arrived yesterday, but order still hasn't shipped out yet. Ughh!
