DIY: How to Remove Trunk Lid Interior Trim

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Had a few requests to write something up for this process. I've recently dynamatted my entire trunk + rear deck for a subwoofer install. Here is the quick and dirty DIY for how to remove the interior trim on the trunk lid.

It's a pretty simple task so I'm not going to spend too much time on this but if you have any questions feel free to PM me or reply to the thread. (Sorry a couple pictures may be a bit blurry because I took them at night in my garage)

    Tools Required:
    Pry Tools
    Phillips Screwdriver
    Allen Key

Basically, what you need to know is this piece is held on by about 11 clips and 2 screws. You can start by de-attaching the cable for the emergency release latch. The green cover just pops off. You can see the metal ball holds the cable in place, just maneuver it out and then the handle just pulls out of its socket. This gives you access to 1 of the 2 phillips crews holding the panel in. The only reason mine is all scratched up is I was unaware of this process (could not find a DIY) so I removed the phillips screw without removing the handle first. Don't do what I did. Follow the new helpful guide

The second screw is located on the right side of the trunk lid. Here is the location:

Remove these from both sides. You can fit an allen key inside the rubber bump stops and unthread them (sorry I can't remember the size off the top of my head). The plastic piece just pries off.

Now that is done, you can pry the clips. I bought a set of plastic automotive pry tools from Canadian Tire for about $15. They worked fantastic, I've been using them for my dynamat project and removed every piece of trunk and rear deck trim without breaking anything. The key here is to just take your time. Once you get a couple you will likely be able to get some fingers under the trim and pull them out by hand (this is what I did).

If you are dynamatting your trunk lid, you will likely want to remove all the clips holding the wiring down. Be warned, these clips are ****y! They just did not want to come out. However, here is a trick I came up with and it made the removal of the clips very quick and efficient. Use a ty-wrap (zip-tie, zap-strap, or whatever other nickname you may have heard) and loop it through the hole of the clip. You now have a handle to wiggle and pull the clips out. They take quite a bit of force and side to side wiggling. I was not able to get them using my pry tools or a small flathead.
VERY IMPORTANT: TAKE PICTURES OF WHERE THE HOLES FOR THESE CLIPS ARE. YOU WILL HAVE TO POKE HOLES IN THE DYNAMAT AFTER ITS INSTALLED TO PUT THE CLIPS BACK IN. THIS WILL BE NEXT TO IMPOSSIBLE WITHOUT PICTURES...Or reference mine if they are clear enough I guess lol

After the clips are removed, I disconnected the wires from whatever they were going to just to get them out of the way. You can figure this out pretty easy, just a standard connector to unplug. This is not a DIY on how to install dynamat, however if you have any questions feel free to ask. There are countless videos and info on the process of installing the product all over the internet. Here are some pictures of the install:

I've taken lots of info from this site over the years so I felt like it was time to give back a bit, I hope this can help some of you as I wish this existed when I was figuring it out. Feel free to ask any questions!

Thanks for your contribution! Your tips and pics will be very helpful for others who need to remove their trunk lid liners more easily and without damage (e.g., to check back up cam wiring, etc). What is even more helpful is that your car is white so the pics have good contrast to show the fastener holes. And the pics of the backside of the liner and parts is something you usually don't get the benefit of seeing.

You can post pics directly here on AZ, albeit only a limited number (should be more than enough capacity for your DIY pics). The Help link in the site toolbar provides the directions.

Thanks again for taking the time and effort to create a helpful and well-documented DIY!

Sorry for a dumb question but I'm not familiar with Dynamat and the purpose or benefit to installing this stuff. Can you guys give me a quick and dirty why I would want this stuff?

I added it to the bottom of my trunk under the spare. I had very little exhaust drone before but now it's virtually eliminated. Sound dampening. Adding it to your doors will improve stereo sound, reduce speaker rattles/resonance etc.

Pictures are back up. Thank you to fmzip for hosting them!

Dynamat is used to eliminate road noise and makes your sound system sound better. I noticed with my stock sub (before removing it), it sounded WAY better after the Dynamat. It was literally like it was a whole new speaker.

    You're welcome bud!

Thanks for taking the time to write this up. I am sure it will save me some frustration! Any tips on the rest of the trunk liners? Are are they fairly straightforward? Nice idea with the tywrap as a pull tool

Here is a guide I found for removing the rear deck:
    https://www.audiworld.com/forums/s4-...guide-2790664/

I followed that and it worked well. The rest of the trunk trim is fairly easy to do. I took pictures of most of that as well. I can post some up here when I get some free time.

Thanks, did the deck with that same thread.

Did you pull off all the factory "dyna-no-so-mat" or did you go right over it if you came across any?

I went over it, if it's what I think you're talking about. There were some patches in the spare tire area of something adhered to the body...no idea what it was lol. Here's a picture of my recent work. I also went as far as temporarily removing the amp and all the fuse holders on the sides to dynamat there as well as the entire wheel well area on both sides. Got a JL12W6 with a Slash 600/1v3 going in so I went all out.

Be warned it's extremely time consuming. I'll bet I've spent 20 hours total with all the disassembly, cutting, rolling, etc. on everything (I did trunk lid, top and bottom of rear deck, all along the side of the wheel well area, spare tire compartment, etc). I'm half way into my second 36sq ft box! Still going to do the door panels eventually and a couple spots in the trunk I haven't hit yet.

Hey sorry if you've answered already, but did you remove the stock sub on the rear deck, or just detach the wires and leave it in place? I'm adding a sub box and amp in my B8.5 S5 and want to know the best way to do it. Also I think I've seen you on the master thread, for your FRONT dash speakers is it worth it to drop in the AUDISON
AUDISON 3" AV 3.0 MIDRANGE with the STOCK B&O amp or would I need to get another 2 channel amp to power the AV 3.0s?

cjpitt80: Just an FYI - if you're seeking a reply from Audi403, be aware he hasn't posted here on AZ since March of 2018 per his profile.
