    Possible to Replace ECU/ECM

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I have a 2013 Audi A4 w/ APR Stage 2. I got a P2008 CEL along with the EPC light. First the dealer told me the solenoid valve needs to be replaced. They replaced it and it didn't resolve the issue. Then they tell me the ECM need to be replaced and it will cost $2700.

Can I buy a used one or do I have to get a new one?
I read APR can clone ECMs. Is this an option? I am also going to contact them to see if they can repair the ECM. I already shipped it to them once to get the "engine fan always running" problem fixed.
Can anyone recommend a shop that programs ECMs in the Chicagoland area?
Any other suggestions besides paying the dealership to do this?

    Thanks.

First, has the intake manifold been tested and confirmed that's operating correctly? Because the solenoid was replaced and didn't fix the problem the dealer didn't investigate further?

Second, ECU replacements are EXTREMELY rare - which begs the question on what basis is the dealer recommending a ECU replacement?
What guarantee(s) is the dealer providing that an ECU replacement will be the end-all / do-all fix for this fault code?

Personally, I feel this is a misdiagnosis on the behalf of the dealer service tech; time to dig into them and get some hard answers.

Buy a used ecu, install it and have car towed to dealer. If they’re not assholes, they’ll take the immobilier off and restore to factory for an hr labor. Confirm with them first.

I did this with my wife’s q5 last year.

The dealer supposedly ran a test on the ECU to confirm it. They had my vehicle for 3 days so I hope it was a thorough test. I had an issue with the ECU last year (engine fan constantly running) in which APR fixed it so I wouldn't be surprised if it was an ECU issue again.

I also had the "engine fan always running" issue which I sent to APR to get fixed last year.

Dealer said they popped in a new ECU and the CEL went away. I would say that confirms an ECU issue. They are allowing me to purchase a used ECU ($145) on my own and they will program it for me. I was surprised they were going to do this since I asked them last year to do it when the ECU caused my engine fan to always run and they wouldn't. Maybe it depends on the advisor you get. My advisor has been great.

Well, got this today after starting the 2012 A4 Avant:

    1 Fault Found:
2468 - Implausible Data Received from Engine Control Module
    U0401 00 [167] - -
MIL ON - Not Confirmed - Tested Since Memory Clear

01314- Engine Control Module 008 Implausible Signal

Looks like based on the information from Ross Tech the ECU has died: http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index...00054#mw-pages

Question: If I pick up an ECU from eBay will it run but throw a ton of codes? I would prefer NOT to take the car to the dealer but most indie shops don't have the VAG 5051 tool or other to code modules.

Battery is new and has good voltage. Started car this afternoon car ran smooth for a few minutes, then died. Fan is on constantly, will not run. Car is APR tuned and has been since 2012. Never had a bit of trouble previously, just looks like the ECU is a goner.

    Any thoughts?
