Is there a DIY on how to remove this? I understand from reading if you are not careful, you can break the hood release lever.

    I've searched, haven't found anything

I tried searching for kick panel removal and the only thing I was able to find was a really useful tutorial on how to resolve a stuck hood release lever. Now if that is the problem you're having with your car, then this should be most helpful. It doesn't address removal of the kick panel though. I also found a thread about replacing a broken release lever behind the kick panel. It includes a pic of the broken lever with the panel removed, along with the lever bracket part number. Perhaps that will be useful to you.

I simply need to get the kick panel off so I can stash a speaker crossover unit behind it

Should be similar to removal on a VW as illustrated here ...

Lol it's easy. Just pull up..

However, the tricky part is removing the hood latch first. Insert a small screw driver near the round part of the handle. There is a plastic piece that pops out. Once you do that the handle just pulls out towards the passenger side. You may have to lift (open) the handle to get it to come out of the panel.
