Question Upgrading B8 headlight LED strip

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Has anyone thought about upgrading the LED strip in the B8 headlights?
For the guys that have cracked open the lenses is the LED strip removable or is it fixed.

I was thinking about adding a brighter LED strip either over the top of the existing one or in place of it. Wiring will be tricky but I think it is doable.

EDIT: Since I am getting flamed for asking this question let me explain why. I replaced my headlight bulbs with ones that are color rated at 5000k. As you can see in the pictures below the LED strip is not even close to matching the bulbs. My friend has the same bulbs and the LED strips in his B8.5 headlights match almost perfectly.

I've seen a couple people do custom headlights but I think you would mostly be on your own.

I agree it is doable and contrary to the fools above not too ricey depending on how you do it.

    Here are my rice headlights:

Hopefully, now they will attack me and you can get back on task.

    ^ Looks like shit.

OP, if you want to have a whiter looking LED DRLs, you're best bet would be to perhaps buy Ecodes. The ones i've seen in person usually burn whiter, crispier light. A cheaper option would be just don't run a 5000K bulb that burns white.. maybe go 4500K. Those LED strip retro fits never look as good as OEM.

I have the same headlight setup except my ambers are carbon wrapped (actual carbon). I love them

You must be blind...Also, I'm guessing OP wants to keep the 5000k bulbs. Otherwise he would'nt have switched to begin with. If you're not going to be constructive, you can go troll elsewhere.

OP, I've seen where guys in the S7 forums have just soldered new leds in place of the old ones, and that's probably you're best bet in terms of a clean looking result. I think the led strips will give you trouble when you try and conform them to the shape of the oem strip and end up being more trouble than the soldering would be.

My ambers are wrapped in 3M 4-D Carbon fiber wrap I think... I can't remember exactly what its called, it was the closest I could find to matching the carbon on the rest of my car.

The rest of the housing is all blacked out.

Not blind, that looks like shit. And LED aftermarket strips never look good. Now, go back to the A5 forums.

Another picture to appease the haters.

@OP, there is a thread in the A4 forum I believe about people replacing the LEDs in the lights. That might help give you an idea.

OP why are your LEDs more amber looking? All the ones I have seen are bright white. Yours looks like they are standard halogen bulbs and not LED. Maybe just the photo but doesn't look right to me

I am puzzled as you are why they look so amber. I have done the VAG mod to adjust the DRL brightness and with the headlights off they do look whiter. Is there a different setting for when the headlights are on?

True these guys are great. Mine were done by OSS designs and they did a good Jon with great customer service! But even that being said I’d say OneEighty

Yes, I believe there is a way in VCDS to adjust the brightness of the LEDS while the HIDs are on. It's been a few years since I did it and I cannot remember how, but I remember on my B8 that I set the LEDs to be at full brightness in both DRL mode as well as to remain at full brightness when the low/high beams were on. Hop over to the ultimate VCDS thread and see if you can find the instructions. I think you're right - when those LEDs run at a dimmer setting they appear to color shift away from white, and it's extra noticeable next to the 5000k rated bulbs.

Off topic, but which 5000k bulbs did you install, and how is visibility compared to the stock bulbs?

I looked through the VCDS thread and didn't see a specific adjustment for when the HID's are on. I tried a few settings that dealt with the DRL's but nothing seemed to work.

And I have the DAMA bulbs which are actually rated at 5500k. The visibility on dark roads is great. The lights do wash some under street lights but on a dark road they light up everything.

    Adjust LED brightness
[09 – Cent. Elect.] [Security Access - 16] (enter security code. One of the default codes is- 20113)
    [Adaptation - 10] -> Channel 3
    Set between 5 and 100
This is with the headlights on. They are at 100% by default without the headlights on.

There's a company that does exactly this. They have switchbacks for the turn signals and then sequential addressing for a nice motion, similar to the b9 turn signals.

For those who want the exact link.

I was debating on building these for a while, but this seems a bit more slim. Company seems to be Korean and a bit lost in translation at times
