Looking for purchase advice for 2013 RS5

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hey folks, I'm considering a used 2013 RS5 that only has 11k miles on the dial and was hoping to get some tips from the community on what I should keep an eye out for when I go over the car and test drive it. The car history report only shows one owner and no accidents. I'm planning to take it to a local audi dealership to have it inspected and see if they have any service records for it and ask them about the Audi Care status too.

Such low mileage could mean it’s either a garage queen or it’s only done relatively short journeys as a daily drive (~7 miles per day).

If it’s been a garage queen, I’d look out for square tires, trust me, my car suffers from this as it does limited driving (I’m on the same 11k mileage). It becomes apparent pretty quickly when you hit the freeway and the vibration builds. The cure is to over inflate the tires to around 50psi and take it for a drive, works for me.
Nothing else has gone wrong with mine, battery still holds strong even with such little use.

If it’s been a short trip daily driver then look for a service record of regular oil changes, lots of frequent cold starts and never getting up to temperature could cause the oil to get the white sludge forming. Pop off the oil filler cap and take a look at the bottom of it., is there any mayonnaise looking deposits.

To be honest, in either case, if it’s been serviced correctly and regularly it should be good. Look forward to seeing pictures of it. Good luck.

Thanks for the advice. The car looks mint in the pictures so I'm hoping for the best.

As a fellow "low mile garage queen" owner I say buy it and keep it low mile. I clear wrapped my whole car and started modding it for a lifetime of ownership.

I went to see the vehicle and drive it today and I really enjoyed the drive. It has a couple very light scratches but appears to be garage kept. There is some light curb rash on one wheel and the front splitter. No white sludge under the oil cap but the car was warm when I checked if that makes any difference. It did have a problem with the rear spoiler, it was stuck raised, the button did nothing, and a spoiler fault popped up on the main screen. I checked in the trunk compartments to see if anything was unplugged or loose but saw nothing obvious.

Unfortunately the owners manual was missing and with it any recorded service history. I called a local Audi dealership, AoA, and the dealership I thought might be where the car was originally sold but none of them could help me for various reasons. The AoA rep I spoke to also informed me that the car wouldn't be eligible for the CPO warranty since I'm not buying it from an Audi dealer. I hate to pass up on the car but the missing service record worries me and lack of available warranty doesn't help either.

The service records would be negligible with that mileage.

As an admittedly biased owner of a RS5, I echo the sentiments of all of my fellow devoted RS5 enthusiasts. As @JamesRS5 said if the service records are intact, you should be fine. A PPI (Pre Purchase Inspectoin) is still highly adviseable, ‘cause you never know. Other than the well known brake issues, (Search AZ “ RS5 owners with brake problems “) I don’t think there is/are any other widely known problems. Good luck, keep us posted, & our little rule is “w/o pictures, it probably didn’t happen.”

It would be my daily driver but work is close. I'm not sure I could keep myself from going joyriding all the time though so that's a moot point.

Its at a carmax dealership so I would actually have to go through the purchase in order to take it to Audi for inspection. They have a 5 day return policy so I don't mind doing that at all.

What do you guys suggest for warranty since Audi wont cover the vehicle?

Ha. I’m a senior with 45,000 km - but the accumulation has slowed down as I bought a truck to haul the family and various items of crap around.

Aside from a headlight and a couple rattles I have had zero problems. And after reading every RS thread on this forum and “the other one” all I’ve heard of is one transmission and one engine having problems. Total.

And as long as you hammer the breaks and they don’t vibrate your car probably doesn’t have the brake problem.

I bought an extended warranty and I think that’s going to be the only dumb thing I’ve done on this car because even the high mileage cars seem pretty bullet proof so far.

It is at Carmax, hell purchase the bumper to bumper warranty they offer. I would think Carmax would have the spoiler repaired before the car is sold. Get a owners manual from on EBay.

Yep, what Doc said. Mine didn't have a manual either (lost in shipping) and I got one off of Ebay for $50. Have them fix the rear spoiler. They have to anyway if you buy the car and bring it back. Comes with a 30 day warranty. If the color/options are right, I'd go for it if the price is good. I look at Carmax prices and they're generally $2K overpriced almost across the board, especially on higher end and sports cars.

Bought it to drive it... 40K.

OP, definitely buy their extended warranty and have them fix the spoiler as a condition for purchase.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. I'm about ready to pull the trigger. The salesman I am dealing with said they would definitely fix the spoiler and reimburse me for a new manual. I'll most likely will pick up their warranty as well.

Personally I just don't trust Carmax cars so a full inspection is a must - I found a local mobile mechanic when buying mine and it got me a new set of front rotors for free and a new set of rear tires as a result, besides the peace of mind regarding other things.

Also have no idea on Carmax warranties but the go-to guy for Audi Warranties is Troy at fd-warranty.com so check him out first before buying the Carmax one - good luck and remember there will always be another one for sale. Mine is 1 of only 47 made in USA and thought I'd never see another one - well right now there's literally TWO other ones for sale (Nardo RS5 Coupe) in Houston and L.A.

I was looking at a fairly low mileage Mercedes convertible at Carmax which they had listed as a one owner car. I pulled a CarFax on the vehicle and it said 3 owners and a minor accident! That alerted me to check on the accident repair because I figured it was just a new bumper skin and the bumper looked fine except that it didn't line up with the rear quarter panel. It likely could be pushed back into place, but the fact that it was sitting on their lot in that condition made me suspicious of the quality of the repair. Left me with the impression that the car had been rode hard and put away wet.

Pretty low miles on the one that you're looking at, so it's probably not the case with yours, but I would be cautious about anything Carmax tells you.

Ask for a print out of the Carfax. It is only like $25 to run yourself, so it might be worth it.

And if you do buy, pay the $350 or whatever they will charge and take it to the nearest Audi dealer for a "CPO inspection." They won't CPO it, but they will tell you if it would pass or not and why. That's what I did before buying my S5 and haven't had any issues I didn't know about before hand (low tread depth, slight vibration at 70 mph, needed alignment).

Hah. 76k Here. 13K miles ago for me was April 2017. Bucky knows whats up

Things to note on the 13. Rear back up camera problems. Mines started acting up at 65k.

Brakes will go every 25 if you daily drive it. Buy ECS rotors when the time comes and hawks pads. When those rotors run, ECS will give you a discount on a fresh pair.

Sunroof squeak - nothing a bottle of Tri-flow didn't fix. Have scratches, but also have ceramic coating - aka couldn't care less but that preferential.

I bought Warranty through Fidelity Warranty Services - at your mileage I wouldn't worry about it much but call them ahead of time to see if you can set up a package. Gold plus or bust.

Brake dust is a bitch on the stock pads. If possible, switch to HAWKs or Akebono. Don't fall into the eventuri trap. It's sexy it sounds good blah blah blah it's a waste of two grand. Put that money towards good brakes set up and sus.

    Get the car PPId

Then drive the shit out of it.

I’d like to hear why you aren’t happy with the Eventuri. To me it was the best (3) grand I spent on my car...stupid CAD lol. I actually found I was underwhelmed by the sound change and pleasantly surprised by the performance. What exhaust are you running?

It's less about pleasure and more about pragmatism - bang per dollar, a solid suspension (a la pss10) set up is to me more important than a intake. I'm on the stock sport with X-pipe. Could it sound better? Yea. Do I care? Nah. The Rs5 isn't all that fast and I don't want to sound like I am.

I contacted Troy but his email seems to indicate this car is not eligible for the Fidelity warranty due to it not being within the original 4 yr / 50K factory warranty.

I did manage to contact the dealer where this car had been getting serviced in VA Beach and Chris there was awesome enough to send me the full service history. He also mentioned I should be able to purchase a warranty through my local dealer but I thought Troy was selling the same ones?

All this conflicting info... I am still not sure if I can get one from anywhere but Carmax.

Ugh... frustrating. Troy sells the same warranty as the dealer. A call to the local dealer wouldn't hurt. I have the fidelity phone number at work. Send me a PM if you don't get anywhere with the dealer. 1:14AM VA time... Man, hope this thing is not keeping you up late at night.

    Carfax doesn't show anything concerning.

Look up Doug DeMuro and his Range Rover Carmax bumper to bumper warranty, on YouTube. Nothing wrong with their warranty.

Then buy it! I've heard you can't go wrong with the Carmax warranty.

The issue with the Carmax warranty is they fix it there, at Carmax, and if they can't THEN it goes to Audi. No way I'd want Carmax working on an RS5. If that's changed and you can take it straight to Audi, it's a no-brainer if the cost is competitive and it's an exclusionary policy.

Troy can't insure anything that's out of warranty but you can still get a Fidelity warranty. You'll need to call them up and find out who the local dealers are for their products.

From what I remember Troy sells 2 options:
    1. Actual OEM Audi Extended Warranties that are only available IF your car has 12mo or 12kmi left on the original 4yr/50k warranty (2013 would not qualify)
    2. 3rd-Party Extended Warranties (I believe Fidelity) that are available regardless of year/mileage

*and he charges less than whatever the Dealer charges :)

The carmax warranty is exclusionary, 5 yr and mileage options 75/100/125k and the salesman I'm in contact with says I can take it to Audi if I want but the deductible will be $50 more than if I took it to Carmax.

Someone at the local Audi dealership said 5 yr 60/75/100k for gold and platinum and that they would send me detailed info but I still haven't gotten that email yet. No mention of a 7 year option that was in the email from Troy.

I'm leaning towards Maxcare right now simply because they've been easier to work with. For whatever reason the audi dealer seems reluctant to work with me.

Side note, I called Allstate for a quote on the RS5 coverage and they were more than twice what Geico would give me for the same exact policy, even though I've been with Allstate for 10 years and have no at fault claims or a bad driving record.

He apparently can't offer option number 2 to me without being able to inspect the vehicle.

I got insanely low insurance on mine through Kemper. Had Farmer's, then got half off that from progressive, then got half off that from Kemper - seriously. It seems Kemper considers the entire A5/S5/RS5 family as the same model or something :)
