When Are You Planning to Change Oil?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
It sounds like some RS3 owners are opting to change their oil immediately after the break-in period – either after 600 or 1,500 miles. But the owner's manual doesn't specifically mention or call for this. Just that more oil is likely to be consumed during the break-in period than after it. And according to the maintenance interval schedule, the first oil change isn't due until 10k miles.

So here's the question: When are you planning to change your oil?

Changed mine at 1500km for the peace of mind for having clean oil after break in.

7500km, 15000km(dealer service), 21,000km, next dealer service will be around 27000km

So basically just doubled up on the factory spec changes.

A few extra changes is good but there is no need to go silly amd change every 2500miles or something silly like that.

    I use 5w30 motul 300

What’s the cost $usd for out of pocket oil change at the dealership?? I’m at 2600 miles now. I’ve been thinking about it. Also. I was quoted $860 for AudiCare.. who’s doing that?

I'd love to know if there is a special break-in oil used from the factory that would be beneficial to the engine to run it between the 1,000 mile break-in and the first service interval. If not, I would be inclined to change the oil at around 1,500 miles.

    1) I'm going to do it myself at 1500 miles *AND* send a sample in to get tested so that I have a benchmark.

    2) I bought Audicare after not having it on my B8.5 S4. I'll never *not* buy it again.

Taking mine in tomorrow - I'm a little over 3k at this point.

Also got my roof rattle back, so they are going to take care of that at the same time. Told them I needed something just as fun for a loaner

I changed mine at a tick under 1600 miles, figuring it can't hurt anything and I was bringing it in for the tire issue anyways. I think it cost around $85 for the oil and filter change. I have not purchased audicare yet, but probably will. It was strange that the service adviser never brought it up though.

I got a quote from one dealer and they are asking for $270. I'm going to continue asking around. Would I have to worry about any warranty issues if I go with an outside mechanic instead?

Use OEM approved oil and filter and you should be good with an indie mechanic

There is no way it should be $270. Go to an independent shop. My S4 takes 7 quarts and it's $125 at the dealer. $270 is ridiculous..

I knew there was no way it could be $270 for a damn oil change. Here is their exact quote via email.

The price for an oil change which includes top off of all fluids, tire pressures and oil filter change as a hand car wash is $269.95
I'll just wait to hear back from the other dealerships and check in with an independent Volkswagon / Audi mechanic near me.

Are any of you guys noticing any Oil Consumption with this engine?

I’ve had a couple Audi’s in the past. A Q7 3.6L and a Q5 2.0T. The 3.6L never used a drop of Oil. The 2.0T was a totally different story. Use to put a quart or two in... in between oil changes.

Then engine would get so gunked up that under load going up hill or something like that the car would start shaking and sputtering. Then I would have to take it to the dealership to get it cleaned out. Use to annoy me to no end it would consume that much Oil.

Hopefully this engine isn’t going to consume oil like that. Wondering if anyone has put enough miles on this engine to be able to gauge its oil consumption (if any).

    Blackstone laboratories.

They run analysis on the oil and look for metals, minerals etc.

Did them at 1000 and 5000, doing every 5k from here on out. Factory oil thus far but will most likely be moving to motul like my last car.

Sounds like everyone here has either changed their oil after the break-in period and is following a more frequent schedule than Audi is calling for, or is planning to do so.

I'm at 1,800 miles and it's starting to feel a little sluggish at lower speeds/rpm. Will schedule mine to go in and like others, will have them resolve other things that have been bothering me -- like the left windshield wiper that continues to skip and judder across my windshield not matter how hard it rains or how much I clean the wiper and windshield!

The sluggish thing is a placebo effect.

keep us posted, i'll be interested to see what other dealers say. IMO it shouldn't be more than $130. Don't worry about the other fluids for now. Sounds like the dealer is trying to scam..

I got a quote from another dealer in the area saying an oil change would cost me $195. What's weird to me, both of these dealerships are owned by the same automotive group. There's no consistency at all. There's another dealership in my area that has a coupon for synthetic oil change starting at $80 for (6 qt max and that price is starting for 4-cylinder engines) I'm guessing the RS3 can't be much more. I will contact them shortly to get a quote without a coupon.

So there are four Audi dealerships within all within 25 miles. The two nearest to me quoted me at $270 and $200 for an oil change. I have not heard from one of them. The last one (where I bought my RS 3, but the service guy didn't know that) told me that a regular oil change for a 4 cylinder engine is $100. He can't be sure of how much it would cost me, but said it would probably be $120 for an oil change.

Although they are the furthest away from me, I think I will continue to give that dealership my business if I can get the oil change for $120. If any RS 3 owner in NE Ohio wants this information, feel free to message me.

I just think it's ridiculous that there is no conformity with these prices.

Even in CA, I just got quoted for ~$130 for oil change from the dealership. $260 seems insane.

This might have been answered before, but what oil did you use or planning to use? I want to make sure the dealership uses the correct type oil.

Clean oil and filter is cheap insurance to keep these cars running for along time. Though I only have an S3, it got it's first oil/filter at 1K and then after every 5K. I do it myself with all OEM parts and a new drain plug every time. Takes me less than 30 minutes start to finish. I would love an RS3 but my car only has 28K on it and I buy my cars- own it outright. Not sure what I could sell it for if I were to make the swap. But I would wait until the RS3 was more readily available as I have never paid MSRP for a car.

I have been told that the RS3 has a plastic oil pan and that an oil extractor is the preferred method for an oil change so as not to strip the drain plug. Has anyone else heard this? That being said, I have n=been quoted $149 for oil change service at an indie here in northern Virginia.

    This is not true.

RS3 has a magnesium oil pan and oil filter is accessed below the car.

Paid ~$120 last night at Audi for a oil change...

A little unimpressed with the service though, after being assured multiple times the roof rattle was gone - I returned 10 minutes after I left..roof rattle was still there after they said they removed(yikes) the glass from the sunroof, tightened stuff down and put felt tape on any potential hit spots...So I'm test driving their loaners - had a Q5 yesterday and an A3 today...Would reallllly just like my car back.
