Hello everybody. I'm new to this forum but I've been following the thread for a few weeks. I've asked this question on the RS Nav site but it seems to me this is the place where any questions actually get responded to, so here I am.

I just fitted the Carplay Interface to my 2012 Q5 (MMI 3G high) and it's working really well. Only thing is I can't get the Voice Command button on the steering wheel to activate Siri. It works fine for the regular Audi Voice Command but does nothing when I press and hold. (I've tried holding it for a really long stupid length of time as well - nothing).

Also, we all know the grey MMI icon currently just takes you to a non-functioning settings / other apps page, but the fitting & operating instructions for my version say that the steering wheel Nav button should take you into the settings of the device if you press and hold it. Again, nothing happens when I press and hold this button. (My steering wheel has the Nav button hidden underneath the volume control, not a dedicated button. At least I think that's the Nav button 'cos it says 'Navigation not Active' when I press it - never actually tried to use it before, other than curiosity).

I've searched the thread about this issue but nobody else has mentioned it. Am I the only one who can't get Siri from the steering wheel or access settings? More to the point, are there any settings to access at the moment? Am I just stuffed?

Just to say, I am really pleased with the overall result, but any help with the above would be great. Thanks....

Hi, I am sorry for the late reply or insufficient answer, because I am bloody tired and busy T.T
Problem with steering wheel button is depend on specific types of steerings. There are two many steering wheel variation, so one by one we are adding supports. However, we never analized the CANBUS and the Steering module for UK models, so we need to figure out some tech data first for RHD cars.

So, for now no setting is available for you and there is nothing you can do in your end. However, several firmware revision will be expected within a week. so Let's see.

Hi Daniel. Thanks for the reply. Even though you don’t have a simple ‘do this then do that and you’re good to go’ answer, I’m encouraged that you may be able to sort it in new firmware. It’s obvious from this thread alone that you’re not getting much sleep lately. Seems like you may have created a monster!

As I said before, interface is working great in all other respects and I can get Siri from the screen icon or phone home button (still using windscreen cradle), but steering wheel control would be the icing on the cake. I live in hope. Keep up the good work!

    Hi Daniel,

Just wanted to update you. I finally installed the unit today. It is amazing! So Easy to install, Super easy to use! I am blown away by this unit! Great Job and I can't wait to get one for our A4. BTW I am using it with an iPhone X, and I routed the usb cable into my Glove Box. Super clean install with no exposed wires. Thanks again!

Did I read correctly that there is a firmware update ? The echo is a huge problem for me. I hear people fine , but they say the sound on their side is horrid. I Drive and talk often for Work so for me this is very important. Also interested in a fix for night mode activation and improvements on the SQ Audio.

Daniel thanks again for all the support. Please let me know if firmware is available.

    So,
We tried the firmware update for the connection problem and it wasn't effective. We even placed a limit on the USB port power draw by tweaking our USB controller, but it didn't work. Amazingly, some iPhone are still sucking up more than 500mA, even if the USB controller was capped.

While the factory is frustrated and keeps screwing up with their PCB designs, I went ahead.

I added an automotive grade 12 VDC to 5 VDC step-down converter to power the iPhone.

The main connector map of RSNAV is like this.

Like the following schematic, I added the converter.
Tapped 12V and system ground to power the converter, and rerouted USB 5v power from the connector to the output of the converter.
Naturally, Pin 1, 2 is no longer connected to the RSNAV.

This is how I did it. Surely, I enclosed the PCB now.

In my lab test with my iPhone 8+, it works very well.
Tomorrow, I will implement this modded cable to an A5 and will test with iPhoneX.

If this is successful, I am going to manufacture this kind of cable and have it shipped to those who are affected.

For Android Auto, the dev team is request 10 more days to finalize. I think they are trying to one firmware for all devices and that's causing some problem.

Daniel, looking forward to receiving the AA device from you but really in no rush. Would much rather you do it right and get some rest and relaxation as well. Can't tell you how much I appreciate and respect your hard work and dedication. Thank you in advance!

I don't recall if AA is having the same issues as CarPlay (or whatever crApple calls it). Does AA have the same delays if used via BT or WiFi? What about the starting up process where iPhones had to be plugged in after MMI started up?

    Daniel,

Would communication to a smartphone or iphone work if there was a USB hub between the Carplay / Android Auto unit? I'm asking whether we can have multiple USB sockets for iphone, android, and maybe a usb stick all plugged in at the same time. When you get a chance give it a thought whether possible.

Can't speak to this specific application but I am curious if a powered USB hub would work here. Assuming the device operates/understands bridging mode.

I'd agree with you but then we'd both be wrong.

Au contraire, AA had even worse on this issue. Generally, Androids sucks up the battery faster. But, for AA various tweak exists and it's stable on Google side.

I think it was working, but I don't think you can connect multiple devices to be ready. I haven't tried it yet, because I didn't have AA supporting firmware when I hooked up with a HUB. Will explorer the option.

briding one hub seems to work.

Anyway, as written above, USB port separate power supply helps the device stabilization.

As of November, you can use the Sirius XM app inside of CarPlay. Otherwise, if you want to use Sirius the "old" way, you'd switch back to the OE MMI interface.

Ok, yeah. I know there was talk about wireless connectivity earlier in the thread, but it seemed to be only for iPhones. I wasn't sure if wireless was ironed out, or even a future option for Android.

AA works over wifi, but there is some lagging. We may add wifi capability in next revision, adding this and that... But nothing planed yet. Too busy to fix USB, AA.

Our Android full screen replacements work AA over wifi though. Not ACP, bot a chance. But our Android devices don't support steering keys ...

I think what Charles is referring to are the numerous connectivity issues that arise due to what appears to be timing. If I plug in my phone and then start the car, I get what looks like boot-loops, connect/disconnect sounds, or no audio (only for media or navigation, can’t remember which one). Lately I have found a reliable way to connect: let the MMI boot up and let the phone connect to the MMI’s Bluetooth. Now plug in the phone. Wait for the CarPlay splash screen on the phone. Get some music or other media audio going on the phone (KERA/NPR app for this old guy) and THEN hold the Nav button to switch to the ACP module. It works 100% of the time and is stable 95% of the time. For that 5% of the time, it drops the connection and I may or may not have to disconnect and start over. It happens even if the phone’s battery is full.

Just received my Standalone CarPlay unit. How do I receive firmware updates? Are they emailed to us, or is there a download website?

Also, what is the purpose of the qr code link to a Chinese website?

    Thank you.

We will email you and post it in my website, once available.

The QR code is supposed to be bring you and international website for our firmware and support information, but we are just too busy pulling each others hair upon this iPhone X gate and delay of Android Auto update. Sigh. Also, since no one is able to write English properly, that's my duty next month to make the QR code site English in Shanghai

I really want to cry at this moment.

Daniel, just want to say how appreciative I am (i'm sure others feel the same) of your hard work and dedication. Not to sound too cliche but some of the most difficult experiences in life are the most rewarding. You'll get through this and come out even more confident and determined. Keep it up!
