I have a Gen 2 unit (great for CarPlay, that's about it) but I'm waiting on my Gen 4 to arrive (decided to move to Android a little while back).
I'm a little confused as to why there's so much confusion about these devices on here. It's all here in this thread but I guess people don't want to take the time to read (I get it, it's quite a bit to sift through but then again if this is so important ...).
The short of it is these are great devices but they're not perfect and YMMV. Gen 2 is great for CarPlay (I'd say it worked like a champ for me once the software update came out) but a few had issues with their phones / cords / whatever. This isn't an Apple product so there will be manufacturing defects or software bugs. It is what it is. It's also sub-$400 for something that adds a lot of value to your overpriced Audi so, maybe it's understandable that it's not perfect.
Gen 4 adds Android Auto (which for better or for worse never came to fruition on Gen 2). Installation for both is plug-and-play and no splicing should be required. People need to understand this is a thread for the standalone unit. It just sits between the screen and your MMI head unit and takes over when you press the Nav button for more than a couple of seconds. You can press ANY MMI menu key (and you don't need to hold it) to go back to a stock MMI screen. It really couldn't be simpler. I don't think overlays (climate control, volume, etc) show up while in CarPlay/Android Auto mode but I'm pretty sure that's an MMI limitation, not an RSNav one.
I have a few gripes about Gen 2 and I am not delusional to think Gen 4 will be completely issue-free but, again, let's put it in perspective: $400 ... for a product that adds that finishing touch to a car so that I don't have to go fork out close to six figures to get a car like mine that has CP/AA stock (with different issues built in) ... I think a few issues here or there will be OK.
In other related news, I will soon have a Gen 2 for sale, if anyone is interested ... ;-)
