    Edit.

Climate control over lays not displaying over android auto, is this expected behaviour?

Audio quality is excellent, I was having distortion issues however it seems to be specific to Google Play. I switched to rocket player and audio was much better.

    No issues relating to connections.

Is there a way to access the settings/menu button in the upper left corner of android auto apps?

Can the system default to android auto on launch?

Can the volume knob be used to skip songs by clicking left or right?

Thanks for sharing! I plan to install it for my sq5 as well but don't know which model is the best for it, which model of rsnav did you get? Can you upload a photo your finished product? How is the software integration with the original button and steering controls/back up camera? Did you watch some kind of guide for your installation?

Most importantly, is switching back to the original Audi MMI exactly same as before? (Controls/settings/sound quality etc.)

    Sorry for all the questions.

    I ordered this unit,

    https://rsnav.com/collections/standa...-interface-kit

Integration is great for an aftermarket piece. Only trick is to enable Aux in the Audi green screen. I borrowed a mates obdeleven which was a piece of cake. Once done, and everything is plugged in, you plug in your phone and hold the nav button for 3 seconds.

Menu scrolling is crisp and responsive. Shifting into reverse brings up the OEM reverse camera, as fast, if not faster than OEM. There's a menu item to switch back to the Audi OEM system.

As for the install, I'm pretty useless when it comes to this sort of stuff and I found it easy. In terms of plugging everything in, you can't really mess it up as all the plugs are different shape ie you can't put the wrong plug in the wrong socket. No more than 1 hour. With the sq5 there's plenty of room to store the unit and cables behind the stereo. This seems to be the most time consuming part for a lot of people.
I did look on YouTube for stereo removal tips but this was also very easy with the correct removal keys.

The only way this unit could be better is if it could auto switch to Aux and launch into AA. I understand this is probably not possible.

Here's a pic just before putting everything back together. The unit with the blueish plug is the rsnav brain.

SSilentj- glad to hear it is working for you- agree, install is very easy and it looks very nice on the screen.

Can I ask what kind of phone you are running and what year your SQ5 is? My unit is freezing up in 5-30 seconds and it requires me to unplug and restart the system. I tried my girlfriends iPhone last night and to worked seamlessly for 10+ minutes so in my case it is definitely isolated to AA.

I'll see if the climate control overlays work today with her phone and let you know.

    Thanks-

I have a Samsung s9 and my SQ5 is 2015. I haven't done any long journeys yet but definitely havent experienced the system freezing during my testing.

    @a4android

I had a couple of questions buried in some long posts.

Are the climate control overlays supposed to display over AA? Mine aren't.

Can the mmi volume knob still be used to skip and go back tracks? Mine can't.

Can AA be set as the default selection after device startup?

How can I access settings/menu button in the upper left corner of andoid auto apps?

    @a4android

Have been lurking this thread for WEEKS. I'm really interested in adding android auto specifically but am a little wary given that it seems to be a little less developed or talked about vs carplay.

It would be really great to see a longer video demonstration of the android auto capabilities vs whats on your site (which seems to be before mic was working properly etc).

Really want to see how the interaction with the stock buttons works for every common function (next track, prev track, etc) google assistant voice commands, etc etc

If you made a 5-10 minute video that went through all of the functionality and usage it would really help sell units, just my $0.02

Been using AA for nearly a week now and, generally speaking, it hasn't missed a beat.

My main concern is not being able to access the AA application menus. This is preventing the ability of scrolling through music folders, accessing phone contacts etc. I don't have access to test this functionality in Carplay. Hopefully Daniel can provide some feedback soon.

Daniel, is there any work being done to fix the reverse camera problem, maybe with a revised hardware version? This is all that is stopping me purchasing.

If you install a camera with the unit, it will not automatically switch to the camera view when selecting reverse apparently. Daniel says this is a hardware fault that can not be fixed with a software update. The feature list on the website has been updated to reflect this.

I want the camera function as much as I want AA, so I hope there is a revision soon.

Not on CarPlay, but the original device supported mirroring that would let you watch movies. I think the new device also supports mirroring which would let you watch movies. You have to use the phone to control the interface in mirror mode...so, no MMI controls.

I have a Gen 2 unit (great for CarPlay, that's about it) but I'm waiting on my Gen 4 to arrive (decided to move to Android a little while back).

I'm a little confused as to why there's so much confusion about these devices on here. It's all here in this thread but I guess people don't want to take the time to read (I get it, it's quite a bit to sift through but then again if this is so important ...).

The short of it is these are great devices but they're not perfect and YMMV. Gen 2 is great for CarPlay (I'd say it worked like a champ for me once the software update came out) but a few had issues with their phones / cords / whatever. This isn't an Apple product so there will be manufacturing defects or software bugs. It is what it is. It's also sub-$400 for something that adds a lot of value to your overpriced Audi so, maybe it's understandable that it's not perfect.

Gen 4 adds Android Auto (which for better or for worse never came to fruition on Gen 2). Installation for both is plug-and-play and no splicing should be required. People need to understand this is a thread for the standalone unit. It just sits between the screen and your MMI head unit and takes over when you press the Nav button for more than a couple of seconds. You can press ANY MMI menu key (and you don't need to hold it) to go back to a stock MMI screen. It really couldn't be simpler. I don't think overlays (climate control, volume, etc) show up while in CarPlay/Android Auto mode but I'm pretty sure that's an MMI limitation, not an RSNav one.

I have a few gripes about Gen 2 and I am not delusional to think Gen 4 will be completely issue-free but, again, let's put it in perspective: $400 ... for a product that adds that finishing touch to a car so that I don't have to go fork out close to six figures to get a car like mine that has CP/AA stock (with different issues built in) ... I think a few issues here or there will be OK.

In other related news, I will soon have a Gen 2 for sale, if anyone is interested ... ;-)

Biggest issue for me with AA is the menu/settings access within applications. I feel like I must be missing something as this seems like a fairly obvious requirement.

I am just now reading this thread and got excited about the product until I read that it requires the phone to be plugged in. Not bad for longer trips where I might be plugging my phone in anyway to keep it charged, but for short trips I think I would get annoyed at having to plug in. Bummer.

Daniel, last weekend tried to install rsnav in the car. After connecting the adapter and all connectors according to the scheme,
there are problems with the sound of the standard radio. At a low level of sound, the sound of the speakers in the front doors is completely lost.
Appears only after the volume level is twisted to the middle.
Periodically, for a while, the sound in the front speakers goes out. The sound differs in quality from the sound without the connected rsnav.
If I disable RSNAV, all the changes are done regularly. The sound reproduced by rsnav through aux does not have such problems. What is the problem?

    My latest update-

Works great with Carplay for GF's phone. I use a Samsung GS8+ which will freeze up withing 5-25 seconds. I tried a friends GS8 and it had the same behavior so it may be Samsung related. I then tried an LG G5 for a short (5 min) period of time and it had no issues in that period of time.

Been working through Daniel to see if we can resolve.

    Daniels email reply,

    1. Nope, overlapping anything above AA is not allowed.
    2. No aftermarket can support those buttons.
    3. It will be added as an option in a later update.
    4. Using the mmi joystick, tilt to left.

Edit. I can confirm that the mmi joystick enables the application menus. I didn't even realise it was a joystick.

I'm now 99.9% satisfied with this device. It has been working flawlessly with my Samsung s9.

So to confirm, the only way to change track is to select the next track button with the wheel and then click?

I can add that the Q7 has plenty of extra room once the unit is installed, you could put 2 of them (maybe more) in there with no issue. The climate control unit is not very deep.

Just got the Gen 4 in the mail, a day ahead of the estimated delivery date. First impressions: I love the new packaging; very professional. I was surprised to find the dash USB socket included with all the other cables. I thought it was going away due to quality issues. I like that it's a much shorter cable than what can be typically found. The S5 has just enough room to fit everything and my current dual port Batiges socket for the Gen 2 takes up all the space (it's bad enough these cables are thick, there are two of them and I'm pretty sure 6 feet was the shortest I could find.

I can't wait to install this puppy... come on, Android Auto! 🤞

What kind of phone are you connecting to it? iOS or Android? On the Gen 2 device, there were some initial audio quality issues that got resolved quickly with an update. On the Gen 4 device, I'm seeing great audio, still. It won't ever be as good as a digital signal due to the analog conversion but it's still pretty high fidelity. Chopping may be due to electrical stability issues. There may be something wrong between the phone and the RSNav unit or the unit and the head unit.

Are there any other Gen 4 Android Auto users on here? I just installed mine and the CarPlay side seems to work just fine but AA crashes after a few seconds of use. I'm on 5.0.5.

Is the audio on the CarPlay Gen 4 as good quality as the OEM Audi AMI interface?

The Audi MMI, depending on your setup, has a pretty advanced DAC. THE CarPlay unit does its own digital/analog conversion. I can't quite tell the difference unless I play a CD.

hey there- I had the same issue with my S8+ and a friends S8. I would get 15-60 seconds and crash. I even tried a fresh image and it crashed- all of this with a new approved USB cable of appropriate length. Tried another friends LG G5 for a fairly short period of time and it seemed to work well. GF's Phone 6S works well as well with no issues.

I picked up an original Pixel XL for ~$150 to try out (Ebay had a 15% off deal this week so what the hell). So far the Pixel works great with waze, google maps, pandora, etc. No crashes at all. I'll probably run the 2nd phone on Project Fi for a while and move from the S8 to the Pixel 3 when they come out likely. I like the stock Android a lot better than the Sammy experience anyway.

Not an ideal situation but get's me most of the solution.
