As someone who has been in this business for a good 15 years now, I can say some dorman stuff really is garbage but a fair amount of their stuff is superior to the flawed factory part its replacing. Both dorman and moog will take a know flaw'd part and go thru the work to reverse engineer the part to update it and correct the known flaw whereas the oem part the dealer will just sell you is the same part which will break in the same way as the part it is replacing. Moog usually calls it their problem solver line. For example, the window regulators on my fathers jeep Cherokee came from dorman, it had metal clips that don't break or shatter after a few years. I went thru 2 factory plastic clipped window regulators on his jeep before I said screw it and got the dorman one. Lifetime warranty on the dorman regulator too, which they honored with no questions at all, when the window motor broke after my old man forced the glass down when it was frozen to the window channel.
Two of my buddies work for corporate VW and Audi on the parts side of things (I work for a vw dealer) came from dorman before they got jobs with VW and Audi. I know firsthand what they did at dorman and how dorman operates. It because of that knowledge that I will actually use dorman products for certain applications. Side note, their experience at dorman is one of the reasons corporate hired them, vw specifically wants to know how the aftermarket operates because they lose a ton of business to the aftermarket every year and want to know what they can change to get the business back.
