Hey guys, new member here. I having starting issues with my 2010 s4 Prestige. Had the car for almost 2 years now everything's been running smoothly regular maintenance, I really baby her.
Over the weekend I was cleaning the car I had the ignition on ( Engine Off) listening to music and charging my phone. Everything seemed fine after I finished detailing for an hour. I drove the car back to my parking garage. Parked the car.

However when I returned. I attempted to start the car. Nothing happens. Only a single click sound coming from the key area. At first I thought my battery was dead. But its fine. Lights work, interior lights work, car unlocks locks. The key battery is fine as well. Whats interesting is I am unable to insert the key and press the "Push to start" Button with or without my foot on the brake. I am unable to get power to my cig port or usb ports without turning the ignition on (which is unresponsive).

The icing on the cake is that I am inside a parking garage and a tow truck cannot come inside. Since I have my electronic parking breaks activated I cannot put the car into neutral and roll it out. The only way I can disengage the emergency parking break from my understanding is with the ignition power on.

From my research it seems to be an ignition switch failure. I just wanted some outside input before I start ordering parts for a DIY fix. Could it be a fuse? or does the clicking sound from the key area indicate its simple a shit ignition switch.

Please Note that I had triple A come and attempt to jump the car. They were unsuccessful I have more than enough voltage running through the car. Still got the same single click.

Here is a youtube video of the same issue and sound im having.

Could be a battery that is on it's way out combined with your use and then starting it and driving a short distance. I would get a boost or hook up a charger if you have one and a plug close by.

Your description sounds like a weak battery and not an ignition switch.

I'm definitely not an expert, so feel free to ignore me, but I've had cars in the past that the battery doesn't have sufficient charge to start but can still power lights, locks, etc. I wouldn't rule the battery out yet. Of course, AAA not being able to jump you may refute my POV.

Check that the battery cables are connected tightly to the battery terminals in the trunk. That's my $.02

The car does require significant juice to jump. When AAA came to jump me we used their battery pack and a nearby vehicle to get enough of the juice. But, as stated earlier, with just one click the charge on the battery may not be the issue

want to rule the obvious just in case. are you driving a DSG or manual transmission? If it's a manual transmission, try pressing the clutch in a little firmer.

DSG! Im going to remove the battery and have it properly tested to check it off the list. Im reading alot of people who have stated that even with a jump their cars wouldn't start.

Where did they jump from? Trunk or underhood?

Bad starter maybe? Grab a hammer and give it a few whacks, sounds whacky but its worked for me in the past.

OP, you mentioned your car is a 2010 and you've had it for 2 years. Did you get maintenance receipts from the previous owner? I have a 2011 (7 years old this month) and I only recently replaced the original battery, which was still functioning. Is your battery original? If not, is it a quality replacement battery? If no service records indicating it was replaced, does the battery have a sticker with the date of installation marked/noted? It's possible the battery developed a fault that cannot be overcome by charging or jumping it. Keep us posted on what you find out.

Not an Audi, but on my John Deere lawn tractor (3 cyl idi diesel) at exactly six years of age all it would do is click. I tried jumper cables from my truck and would get exactly the same click. Put in a new battery, now it barely makes one revolution before it is running.

Battery. Mine did the same thing, AFTER I got a new battery. The car was never programmed after new battery was replaced. and the car thought the battery was still old. Towed it to shop, Vag com for new Battery, and hasn’t happened since.

If it was a Porsche 993 I'd be 99% sure it was a bad starter relay. Its a common problem with the 993 and I always carry a spare. In this case I'd wager the battery is the culprit. How old is it? Not enough cranking amps.

Is that a real thing? The battery is not user serviceable? Is it ok to unhook if I am working under the hood?

It is user serviceable to replace, but if you put a new battery in the car you need to reset it through vag com or the car will keep treating the battery like it’s the old one and potentially overcharging it, causing an early failure.

    Really!?!?
That's terrible news. So any pepboys, orielly, AutoZone, Wal-Mart, ETC. that replaces an Audi battery is likely to destroy it before the free replacement period is over?

I'm not sure how true this is to be honest. While I haven't changed the battery in my S4 yet - I have changed it in our Q5. Vagcom was unable to reset it for our Q5 for some reason, but its been 2 years now with the new battery - zero issues.
