For the same price, what would you choose and why? 2013 S6 vs 2015 A6

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hey guys,

Im in the market of buying a new car. I have been weighing my options between a B8.5 S4, C7 S6, or C7.5 A6. All are within the same price range I am looking at. As Im looking to do the family thing, I have pretty much crossed the S4 off of the list, so I am down to choosing between 2013 S6's in the 60K mile range, or a 2015 facelifted A6 (3.0T) in the 30-40K mile range.

Maintenance is a concern, but not as much as some... I am sponsored by a local vw/audi performance shop so I get some good deals on labor. I realize the 2015 A6 would still have warranty, which is nice.

Looking to hear some pros/cons of each vehicle from those with experience with them.

    Thanks a lot.

If you can swing the fund go with the S6, a a tune from EPL or APR. I recently added the EPL ECU and TCU tune to my S7. I am very happy with the tune.

While I'd be inclined to say the S6, given the mileage, I'd make sure you have it VERY thoroughly checked out before taking the plunge. Plenty of room for family, and you won't regret the twin turbo V8. Careful, once you've driven it, your other choices will seem pale in comparison.

I went through the same thing beginning of the year. Based off how much I drive an S6 didn't make sense to me from the maintaince perspective.

I've had my fair share of Audis and when it came to V8 models they always seemed like money pits, at least from the 3 I've owned, esp the RS6.

Just went through a similar calculus. Went with S6. Too much fun to pass up. Was CPO though, I would be wary about it without coverage.

    Thanks for the input guys.

Modding is definitely going to happen, but not extensive... Intake/tune/exhaust/suspension.

My hangups with the S6 are definitely fear of maintenance. Compared to the 3.0T, it's not nearly as "proven" in terms of longevity. I also imagine parts will be harder to come by and more expensive. My friend who works for a dealership told me that almost any major maintenance issue requires the motor to be removed, which doesn't sound appealing. I know the TT V8 would be amazing, but I am a little scared of how much I'd have to spend on it out of warranty.

With the A6, it would still be under warranty for some time which is nice... especially with lower miles. I just hate that the A6 isn't DSG/Manual. I just got back from ireland... so many manuals haha. Right now, I'm honestly leaning towards the A6 for reliability. Plus, a dual pulley upgrade + epl tune and I'm in the 450hp range... that's not shabby for a daily driver.

I thought the 2016's were the first of the C7.5's.

You should def drive both. My wife wanted a A6 but I wouldn't let her as I had already figured out how much nicer the S6 was. She had the chance to drive the A6 of sane model year and she got home that night and said she was so glad I wouldn't let her have the A6. You will most definitely regret not getting the S6.

Many guys are on here with stage 3 S6's which have been super reliable so I wouldn't worry too much about that side of things.

    The facelift happened in 2015.

I suppose I'll have to see whats still available come feb/march when I'm planning on being ready to buy. There are no S6's near me that are for sale, unfortunately. Anyone with an S6 in the NC area wanna give me a ride one day? haha

So the C7 2015 was a facelift too?

My 2016 was a C7.5 facelift from the 2015 as it has different grill, different bumpers, different MMI, slightly improved interior and some other small things. I was also told they removed the sports diff as a standard option too.

Has anyone considering both cars been happy in retrospect choosing the A6? The A6 is always the compromise car in that situation, and compromise cars last about as long as compromise girlfriends. Get the V8. You may even be saving yourself money.

S6. More car, overall and looks exactly the same as the 2015 you'd be getting. 2013 S6 vs 2016 A6 would be a tougher call since the facelift occurred during the 2016 MY.

The only problem with the 2016+ cars are the 4 bolt pullies on the supercharger vs the press on of years before.

Can't tune then as much as the press on pullies

I have the same problem. Not sure what to choose, S7 first generation vs a7 new generation.
For sure, trying some S7 last week, I can say its very addicting driving V8 and sounds that its make is awesome.

Same here, I got about 8 months to figure things out. Looking at 2014-2015 S7's with up to 50k miles or 15-16 A7's with way less miles for the same money.

The look the same. So that's even. The 3.0T is reliable except for the pesky thermostat. The V8T is a proven engine (not sure where you heard otherwise.)

If you intention is to go dual pulley on the 3.0T, then you answered your own question. You want a S6.

This is coming from an A6 owner that has a dual pulley. I could have just spent a little more on the monthly payment and got sport seats and a faster car. I would have tuned it just the same and be further along than I am now, horse power wise.

I'm just really afraid of maintenance on the S6 considering I'm going to have this car for at least 5 years. I know any major maintenance issue will require pulling the engine. Im not too thrilled at the thought of that.

The hard thing is the v8tt is such a new engine and there aren't many if any really high mileage ones, so knowing what the future holds for maintenance is kind of a mystery. Last Jan I bought a 2010 A6 3.0t with 82k. The c6.5 was the first car to use the 3.0t so again not really knowing what the future could hold for me. I put 20k on it in 14 months and the thermostat went out, not a huge deal, seems to be the only issue, $1100 to fix. I got scared and dumped it for a loss and got a new s3. Since like you I plan on keeping my s3 for 5 years and maybe beyond I didn't want to take any risks.

    S6 because 4.0T (enough said)

I think by now the 4.0T has proven itself IMO. Mine is only up to 55k but there's high mileage cars out there and very few major failures. So far the semi-common flaw has been primarily front wheel bearings and oxygen sensors (o2 sensors on an Audi? who would have thought).
