    Crankshaft Position Sensor Location

Looks I'm the first guy here trying to replace my crankshaft position sensor on a 2012 A6 3.0

I'm trying to find the location to determine how much of a pain its going to be to replace it. Has anyone done this before?

I found it. Located at the rear of engine near flywheel, passenger side.

Damn rabbits chewed my wires resulting in my fault code P0337.

I still replaced the sensor since it was a version “E”, new version is now “F”.

I soldered the wires back together and it’s back to perfect. IMG_0852.JPGIMG_0853.JPGIMG_0854.JPGIMG_0855.JPGIMG_0856.JPG

Apologies for resurrecting the old thread, but I am contemplating replacing this sensor myself as it is downright impossible to find a mechanic who wouldn't do more damage while doing it. I could use a few tips before diving in as the available info is scarce and this appears to be the closest one as far as hands-on approach is concerned. :)

I need to do it on 2011 A7 with 3.0TFSI engine so I believe the location is the same. If I understood correctly it can be accessed from below, passenger side, towards the rear end of the engine? What needs to be removed to access it, if anything? It is hard to say from the photos.

Thanks, any tips would be welcome before I dive under the car during this scorching heat outside, so I better start prepared.

Yup, bottom at the back of the engine.

I cannot remember how many of the belly pans need to come off. There are 3 panels. Definitely the rear panel and maybe the middle panel. You will need triple square drivers for the middle panel. Behind the rear belly panel is a subframe brace that should not need to come off. You can work around the frame brace to access the sensor. Otherwise its simple hand tools.

Thanks, this helps a lot! I already ordered triple square drivers last week, I had a feeling I might be needing them.

Have you replaced your sensor? How long does it take to replace? I am planning to replace mine as well. Thanks!

Replacing the sensor should be less than an hour from the time the wheels leave the ground to back down on all 4s.

Hello Patrick - not yet unfortunately, I wasn't able to set up a place for my "wheels to leave the ground" :) and on top of it it appears the problem might have gone away with the heat subsiding a bit. Just a speculation though, I'm not even sure the sensor is the culprit in the first place but I am betting on it. I will report back once I get to it, if you do it before I do I'd appreciate if you can share the experience.

    Thanks!

Hi Ribosom, I did the replacement today. It took me less than an hour. You will need to remove the second belly panel which is the larger one. The sensor is at the back of the engine behind the drivetrain stabilizer. You might need a long nose plier to pull the sensor out the room is small and better do it after the car is cooled down.
