Clunking coming from drivers side after coilover installation

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hey guys,

Recently I had a shop install Ksport Kontrol Pro coilovers on my 2.0t FWD. Everything was great for the first few days, but then after they settled i started getting this clunking/knocking noise from the front drivers side wheel area that only happens when accelerating from a full stop or a slow roll. They replaced the upper and lower control arm bushings on the left and right sides and also got it aligned after dropping it to 25.5 ftg all the way around. Any ideas what the noise might be and how to fix it? I don't hear it at any other time than what was just mentioned.

Question 2: they made the ride ridiculously bouncy when they installed them. Do I have to take the coils off in order to adjust the damping on our cars? I couldn't seem to find where I would insert the knob from the hood area but to be fair I didn't look too hard or remove anything to poke around.

Thanks for any help you might have.

Q1: did they torque the arms under load / ride hight.
Q2: as far as I know, No.

I can't be sure if they torqued it properly under load as I was at work when they had the car and they didn't explicitly mention it. What they did say though was that they're more of an OEM repair shop rather than aftermarket performance, so I was hoping to get some insight from the community on whether or not you think it's an installation issue or just some parts going bad. For reference, the cars got 135k miles on it (I've only had it for about ~3k) And I'm not looking to track or abuse the car, just make it look nicer as my daily driver. Running on 19x8.5 et42 245/35/19 wheels with non-aftermarket brakes if any of that helps to reach a conclusion.

And when you say "as far as you know, no" do you mean no, we don't have to remove the coils to adjust damping or no, there is no way to do it without removing them?

Might worth to to give them a call and ask if they tighten and torqued it under load.

No you don't need to take the spring, see this: https://youtu.be/RwKs4JTNL_o

A lot of times, clunking after a coilover install is from the top nut not being tightened enough or forgetting to put the spacer washer back in.

I've been chasing this same thing for a while now. I need to loosen up everything up and tighten them up at ride height. I found some sub frame bolts loose too.. Could it be strut bearings? My "clunk" noise is usually during slow tight turns. I just replaced the pass cv axle and It didn't really help. I just really want to figure this crap out.

Yeah im gonna give em a call tomorrow when they're open and see if they can take another look.

And perhaps I misspoke (first time coilover owner) but I'm looking for the spot to put these , pictured below, so that I can adjust the stiffness of the ride. Based on my understanding, that's what these are for right?

Did your kit come with any instructions of the sorts? Maybe contact the place you bought them from and say Hey, wtf is this thing. Maybe try calling ECS Tuning and see about whether they carry them or not and if so ask about that pin. Idfk what that could be for, I’m really trying to think what it could be for but I honestly don’t know. ECS will direct you to some extension or what not and they usually tend to be very helpful, good luck!

I have ksports that I installed and removed shortly after to go air. Yes, you do have to remove the struts to adjust dampening. I know, that part sucks. I have to do that with my airlift too. It shouldn't ride bouncy, it should feel close to the stock suspension.

I have k sport I have a 2inch drop and still feels like stock . Love them. In order to adjust the damping you have to remove the front struts

Thanks guys. I'll reach out to the shop to have them re-torque everything and see if that fixes the issue. If i adjust the dampening to be on the tighter end, do you think that would reduce some rubbing against the fender liners in the rear? I would think with less room for play that it wouldn't move the wheel up and down as much. It doesnt hit the fender itself so the tires are fine, it just makes an annoying noise going up the dipped ramp at work that makes everyone turn their heads lol

In your original post you said the ride was already very bouncy and that would indicate the shop set the dampers at a firm (probably most firm) setting.

Thanks for the advice guys. In case this helps anyone else, i brought it back to the shop and it turns out they didn't torque it under load/height on their final adjustment and that's what was causing the noise. They retorqued and now everythings perfect!

Performance Motor Works in Rocklin. Ask for Dan - he's a good dude. Before you give them a call though have your coilover model number ready. He likes to look up the parts online (while you guys are talking) before he gives the okay on doing aftermarket work
