    High Beam Assist?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
In my MMI on my 2017 I have a setting for "High Beam Assistant". Double checked the name this morning. It is not an "enable/disable" as mentioned in the manual, it is an "early/middle/late" setting.
It this an error in name and it really determines how early in the evening the headlights turn on? When I turn on high beams I only see the blue headlight with not "auto" in it.

Not an error. Test it out driving and you will see the high beams automatically dimming when it detects another car. The settings is for how far you want them to react, meaning the earlier the faster they'll dim. It's a cool feature when driving dark roads/hwy

Thanks for the reply but I have tried and and end up manually turning it down because they don't dim automatically. I watched a video online where it turns them off (blue indicator goes out) when it detects a car. Mine just stay on. My switch is set to auto. Not sure what else I need to do to enable this.

I assume you are enabling HB assist by pushing the stock once so that the word "auto" lights up? If you push the stock again the "auto" disappears and the lights stay on high beam until you manually disable.

I've tried one push, two pushes, one long push, nothing that I can tell other than the headlight symbol comes on with no A or auto on it. Anyone else's 17 have this working? I wasn't even sure the 17 should have it on account it's listed under the DAP package (I believe).

Haven’t had the opportunity to check yet as I rarely use high beam. Will let you once I test it out.

I have a '17 (and do not have DAP), but I do see this option, and changed it to "early", but haven't really had a chance to test. Does anyone know how to test without driving into traffic with my brights on?

Per the "A3" user manual, we should only need to set the headlight switch to auto, which I have done. I never see the headlight symbol with the word "auto" or "A" come up when I put on my high beams as described in the manual. I have tried, no doubt to the chagrin of oncoming cars, to get it to work. Nothing. There is a video of an Audi on youtube which shows high beam assist functioning but it has the additional headlight symbol (one in white with an "A" in the corner if you look closely at the center of the display).

It would be interesting to know if there is a correlation between those that see this option, and those that do not have subwoofer control (I do not have subwoofer control).

FML you are on to something.
I have the high beam control but it doesn't do anything. It just stays on and I blind everyone.
I don't have a subwoofer control. Pictures attached, now I'm sad....

I just picked up a 2018 TTRS and I have the exact experience described above. High beam assist is a game changer, and I'd really like to get it working. Any resolution?

I think I figured it out! First off, it's not called "High beam" in the MMI menu (I have 2018 RS3). It's just called "Automatic headlights" (early/middle/late) and "Headlights assistance" (on/off). The sub-menu is in the exact same position as the screenshot above, so it must be the same, just no mention of "high beam". I was kind of furious before I figured it out, because I got the driver assist package specifically to get all the high-tech features, and it would've sucked if I didn't get the high beam assist feature. Must be the new version of MMI firmware, as I do have the subwoofer controls.

Secondly, you have to keep the "dial" to the left of your steering wheel on "Auto"!! I think that's the key to get the high beam assist to work. If you force it to go all the way to the "headlights on" mode, the "Auto" mode for high beams never shows up on the dash. If you keep the dial on "Auto" and then push the turn indicator stalk to toggle the high beams, you get "Auto" under the high beam icon on the dash (gray when it's off, blue when it turns on). I haven't tried it yet on the road though, so would love if someone can confirm?

TLDR; Make sure to keep the headlights switch on "Auto" to get high beam assist to work (if you have it).

I'd love to get it working, but the menu option we (2017) see is shown in the screenshot by shivaswrath above. It's not what you see on the 2018. If you have the Drivers Assistance Package, then you absolutely should have it. Auto setting doesn't make it work for me. :(

No joy here. No Headlights Assistance option. I think it's whether you have the DAP (not available on 2018 TTRS). However the presence of the Auto-dimming High Beams setting in MMI gives me hope. If the light sensor is there (and I wouldn't bet against it) maybe it could still be coded. This is where I'm hoping a VAG COM guru will weigh in.

Probably not cool to link to another forum, but here's the summary of what I found:

Other owners have successfully activated High Beam assist on Premium plus B9 with no driver assist features, confirming all the camera functions are available on every model. OBDeleven has an app to enable high beam assist.

I know nothing about OBDeleven, will the dealer know something was flashed and somehow violate a warranty like an ECM tune?

The answer to that question sparks debate. I'll go with: I don't think so, but it depends. These tools (VAG COM, OBDEleven) are pretty powerful coding devices. A determined novice could probably screw things up sufficiently to require dealer reflashes to restore original coding. I'm guessing that would be pricey.

I've also heard that routine maintenance at the dealer often includes reflashing memory, which overlays your custom coding and wipes away "free" functionality like High Beam Assist on non-DAP cars.

I think if we exercise just a bit of caution, OBDEleven is designed to be reasonably accessible to the enthusiast.

Just to clarity, do you all have the DAP? I haven't checked yet in my MMI but I didn't order the DAP as an option on my '18 and was not expecting to have it. If I did luck out and get it, i'd be pretty stoked. I do have the subwoofer control though, as I see some linking a connection between the two.

In for an answer on this. I have the high beam assist feature on my '17 S3 but the only option I don't have is DAP. Been trying to get this to work via settings menu and various headlight switch adjustments since I got the car with no luck.

Checked this morning after I got off work and went into exterior lighting settings in the MMI. The only lighting option I have is for automatic headlights with the setting "early, medium and late" which I'm assuming is for the actual headlights when in the "auto" function on the controls next to steering column. No DAP here but I don't have the auto dimming headlights option as far as I can tell. Wasn't expecting it but was kind of hoping I got lucky somehow as I use my hi beams alot with the amount of deer in my area.

Just to confirm, you all are pushing the turn signal stalk away from you to activate the auto-high beams, correct? 1st push away on the turn-signal stalk activates auto high-beams, 2nd push activates steady on high-beams, 3rd push turns them off. Pulling the stalk towards you turns them on as long as you are pulling back, useful to flash them at someone/something.

I'd love to have the matrix headlights but I'm going to guess they will cost roughly 4-5k for the pair and will require coding since the rear Euro dynamic tail lights they sell require coding. I did find these though on TAGs website, although it doesn't mention matrix despite them being E-Codes. Also much cheaper than on Europrices site.

Somewhat related question about the headlights. Are they supposed to self level when you turn the car on? also do they move when driving with the steeringwheel? My RS4 had that option wasn't sure if the RS3 had it as well. Noticed on my RS3 it doesn't do either and my headlights appear to be positioned a bit low.

I haven't noticed any self-leveling. And while the headlights don't "turn" when you are turning the steering wheel, the car automatically turns on "side" lights to illuminate the side you are turning towards. I think it's the same lights you can manually turn on with a push button to the left of the headlights mode dial (fog lights?).

They definitely self level. Upon initial startup, you should see your lights "dip" then level out. Park in front of a wall or your garage door and you can see this. If they don't do this, something is not functioning correctly and have it looked at. And yes as others have mentioned, we have a fixed light that turns on when you turn left or right. It's pretty visible and you should be able to see this if you drive on a dark street or parking lot.

Thanks guys. I will take a look but I have yet to see if that self leveling happens. I have yet to notice.
