    Battery Tender Hook up Question

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Looking to hook up a battery tender to my 2014 S4 but have a lame easy question. The positive is easy to find under the cowling cover, but is the negative connection really that silver bolt on the coil over with a - sign on it? Again, stupid question but then this is my first German car and things have to be different...

    Thanks!

Yes. That is the recommended location per the manual. I've used a Battery Tender at those connection points without incident.

The other option is to use a short extension cable to the battery directly in the trunk. I have the cable wired in and then can leave it plugged in to the charger with the trunk closed (I put a protective cable cover around the section that the trunk lip is pressing on). With the quick disconnect its a breeze and worst case, if I ever forget to unhook it, it comes off with very little effort.

I ran one out of my trunk. Just a pigtail that I ran up to the trunk floor... when connected the trunk still closed without issue.

What battery tender (or similar product) is recommended for our cars in storage over the Winter? The Battery Tender website has several offered, all with different AMPS.

Also, as listed in this thread, are people attaching the leads to the battery in the trunk or some access point under the cowling?

I suspect it's probably easier to attach the Battery Tender to the connection points under the hood, but that connecting it in the trunk would also work. That said, I happen to have a 1.25 Amp Battery Tender Plus (Model 021-0128) that I no longer need. I used to use it on my '85.5 944 and my 2004 R32 when I put them in storage for the winter months. They're both gone now and we're down to our S4 as our sole daily driver, and not planning to acquire any toys to occupy the other half of the garage. If you want the Battery Tender I have, it's yours (at no cost). I'm in the Canton area but get up to Cleveland fairly often (mainly for Heinen's trips). Alternatively, you can pick it up down here at your convenience. Send me a PM if that works for you.

I use the engine bay terminals with a CTEK Multi 3300 charger that was recommended to me.

Using CTEK as well in engine bay. Only issue is I must leave the hood opened a bit so the cable doesn't get squeezed too much

I did the simple mod to make the 12v socket in the ashtray permanently live, based on this guide.............
    https://www.audizine.com/forum/showt...it-s-always-on

Then I use a CTEK type smart charger (actually a "maypole" ) plugged in to that.
Very convenient, works perfectly. Shut the door on the wire, lock the car and no issues.
