    Carbon Imports Rear Diffuser S5

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi Everyone,

I wanted to share my experience with a recent install of the Carbon Imports Rear Diffuser v 2. Here is a link to the item.

    https://www.carbonimports.ca/collect...user-version-2

At $309, it is half the price of the other name brand diffusers out there, so I was excited to try it.

It arrived within a couple of weeks in a giant Styrofoam shipping container from China. My Post Office actually called me and advised that it would not fit in there mail truck, so I had to come pick it up. As you can see from the picture below, it was massive compared to the cargo capacity of my car. With my rear seats folded down, and the top portion of this shipping container removed, I was able to stuff the box in the trunk and get it home. Yes, I could have simply taken the diffuser home and left the box behind, but not knowing whether I would be returning it or not, I wanted to keep the shipping container.

When I unpacked it, I was pleased to see that they had included a set of screws, and some double-sided tape. And my first impression of the product itself was that it looked really good. The edges were clean, the back was smooth, and the finished side was high-gloss with no visible imperfections.

My first attempt at installing this was to replace the original without removing the bumper. Using a set of plastic body panel removal tools, it was not difficult to remove the stock diffuser. However, trying to install the rigid carbon fiber diffuser was impossible. After several hours of attempting this by myself, and discovering that the screw holes on the carbon fiber diffuser do not line up with the stock mount points on the car, I gave up in disgust and reinstalled the stock Diffuser. The picture below is my attempt at comparing the difference in the stock and carbon fiber diffuser mounting holes. It is not exact because I am trying to line up to curved parts, but the perspective is pretty close and you'll see a photo below what the actual difference is.

After giving up, I sent a note to the seller, Carbon Imports, and within A day and a half, I had a response. The response explained that many purchasers have experience the same things, but others have not. The seller recommended that I remove the bumper and perform the install, drilling any new holes that are necessary. Well I was not excited about that approach;the idea of shipping this product back to China was going to be painful, and the idea of buying one of the other options on the market at twice the price, it was not very exciting either.

So, this past Sunday afternoon, I went through the process of removing the bumper to install this new diffuser. Thankfully, I found this thread in the link below which explained most of the steps. If you have a B8 .5, read down into the meat of the thread and don't simply follow the instructions from the original post. There are some differences in the .5 iteration of the S5 and you'll need to read those in advance.

    http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...Bumper-Valence

After some trials and tribulations with the install, and a minor panic attack in removing the bumper, I was finally able to get this thing installed. I did end up using several additional screws to securely mount the diffuser to the bumper, and you will see those in a couple of the pics. You will also see the misalignment of the original holes.

In the end, it looks good and I'm pleased with it. If you go with this Diffuser, expect to do the bumper removal and have to drill new holes. Having a helper would also be good.

interesting enough I have the v.1 from them and install was exact without having to remove the bumper or drill any holes. I was expecting to have to do exactly what you did and lucky I didnt have to.

What are the steps to remove the stock diffuser? I ordered the same carbon fiber diffuser from carbon imports and will attempt to try to install it soon without removing the bumper. If it wont work I will have to remove the bumper like you lol. I heard some people didn't have to remove the bumper. I hope I don't have to.

There are 5 bolts I had to remove, 3 on the bottom and 1 on each side of the car next to the exhaust. Once the bolts are removed, you carefully pull it away from the car starting from either end. You might have to put some force to get it out, however you may potentially break some of the tabs.

Yep, and if you have a set of body panel tools (the inexpensive plastic ones), they can help with releasing the ends of the plastic clips that hold it into the slots across the top.

It looks very good! I am in the market for a diffuser and I'm glad I came upon this thread. Not that I'd have any issues removing the bumper, I take cars apart all the time at work. Just wondering if there are any heftier looking diffusers for the S5? I did the Rieger bumper and now the stock rear end looks wimpy.

diffuser looks great at such a good price! the hassle of removing the bumper and drilling new holes/slight modifications is well worth the money u save from the big name companies imo.

another reason why I think people need to stop bashing ebay/china parts as a whole. they do provide some quality stuff at a good price

I agree. I was pretty frustrated with the unexpected challenges with installation, but in the end and for the reasons you mention, I'm pleased. I started the thread to help the next guy who may expect a plug-and-play install, to be ready for a slightly more involved install. Removing the bumper and drilling holes is not a big deal if you have some instructions and the right tools.

Oh, while half way into the bumper removal, I had to go out and buy the 10mm deep-well socket, which was an unexpected step in the bumper removal.

I think I jumped in with Step 1 and got frustrated when I hit unexpected roadblocks. Lesson learned: Read all of the instructions first - instructions being the bumper removal thread in the op above. The part from Carbon Imports had no instructions.

"Nave" at Carbon Imports contacted me to advise that they will be rescanning the OEM parts to see if any tweaks are needed to their design, and they are working on comprehensive instructions.

As you say, looks great and worth the price. Appreciate your comment.

I think at a price like that, I wouldn't mind dealing with the screw holes not being in the right spot. Did you just drill pilot holes and use the OEM hardware?

Agreed and yes. I used the screws that were supplied with the product to shoot into a couple of areas where the clips could be screwed to the inside lip of the bumper (near the tail pipes). Sorry, didn't think to grab pics of those. I also did not use the supplied auto adhesive tape because it looked like it would be challenging to use it without it being seen.

I don't think you really need the adhesive tape if the hardware is properly secured. I found that to be the case in the past with other cars and front lips. If anything, the adhesive just made things messier.

Edit: I just went ahead and ordered this. I had it on my "do want" list for a while, and now with the price coming down and my birthday around the corner I'ma treat myself.

So far I have the carbon imports diffuser version 2, The jc sportline front lip, carbon imports side mirrors, and the carbon imports version 2 spoiler for the s5( just came out and looks awesome). I'm gonna get wheels and coils first before I install the diffusers and front lip. Carbon imports just released side skirts for the s5 which I will order soon to complete the package. I never installed a diffuser or front lip before. I hope I don't break anything.

How long did it take for some of you to receive your diffuser after ordering it? OP said it took a couple of weeks in his case, so I'm curious if that seems pretty standard across the board for everyone.

Colorado. If it's colder than 55 or so, it's too damn cold to be outside working on a car for too long. It was 90 today, which is really hot for September. Give it 2-3 more weeks and we'll be seeing 50's I'm sure. It'll be hitting negatives by November or December. The only time I'll work on a car when it's colder than 55 is if something is actually broken and I need to fix it.

Is removing the bumper absolutely positively necessary? I've taken off the stock valence without removing the bumper... what exactly is it about the carbon fibre rear valence that requires the bumper removal? The drilling of the holes? I really, really don't want to remove the stock bumper.

    Thanks everyone

Removing the stock diffuser is easy. And you can try to to pop the CF diffuser on and secure it. I tried. Maybe if I had a helper to keep pressure on one end while I worked on the other, I could have secured it. But the holes don't line up, so drilling new holes was a must for me.

The stock diffuser is plastic and a bit more flexible, compared to CF which basically has no flex. The holes on the current version of the Carbon Imports v2 Diffuser are not exactly where they need to be.

For the price and all i didnt mind one second having to modify pieces to make it fit snug. I trimmed more off of mine to make the bottom sections flush behind the wheels. I see on yours you still have the minor gap. But overall nice and aggressive look. Now you just need a carbon wing

CF wing is on the way from Mr. Spectacular http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...t-(S5-Spoiler)

And a CF front lip is on the way from Mr. China.

Now that I understand how to get the bumper off without too much headache, I'll probably deal with the gap when the weather gets cooler. Would you mind sharing a pic of yours with no gap? Thx!

I still haven't seen any updates from the vendor on my order. I'm hoping it's not one of those situations where I just fall through the cracks again...

I emailed the vendor to see if there were any updates on my order. They responded back within 30 minutes to give me an update. So far so good on the customer service side of things. My diffuser should ship out by the end of the week.

Quoting myself here. I received no word by the end of the week like I was told. Now I'm starting to get a little flustered. I ordered this on August 31. 11 days later without any shipping information in place yet has me wondering if I've fallen through the cracks. I'll give it until tomorrow, and if I don't hear anything back I may very well just have to go another route.

Edit: They must be in my head, because I just received an update from the vendor mere minutes after posting this. Looks like it should arrive in 4-6 days.

I finally received my diffuser yesterday night. Aaaaand it doesn't fit. It also has damage on it, so now I need to hope that this vendor will work with me to either replace the item ASAP or refund my money. Not real happy about this at the moment.

It seems like the diffuser is just way too long to fit. There was a small crack in the diffuser upon receiving it, and just putting a little stress on it caused the clear coat to chip away when the crack opened up even more. I didn't get any good pictures while trying to mount it, because it wouldn't even stay in place. None of the clips would actually snap into place on the bumper, not a single one. It's like the little clips have no definition to them, and therefor won't click in at all. I'd have to secure every single one of them with a screw, which I'm not really okay with since that requires me to basically molest my bumper.

The other fitment issue, which I already expected, was the location of the holes for the bolts. I took measurements and preemptively drilled extra holes knowing that those weren't in the right location for most people.

The very edges of it also don't line up at all with the bumper. There was about a 1/2 inch gap between my bumper and the lower outside edges of the diffuser.

The vendor just replied to my email a short time ago and asked me a few things, so I responded back and sent them a picture of the cracked area. Just waiting to see what he says next.

No, I didn't try this with the bumper off, because I unfortunately cannot remove my bumper. Apparently the last time the Audi dealer removed my bumper to address a squeaking issue, they stripped out the torx bolts on the hinges, so I'm stuck with my bumper on the car. I need to go deal with the dealership now regarding that, too.

Here's the crack. It just got worse with every attempt at clipping the diffuser into the bumper:
