Front Brake Pad Change DIY Help

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Looking for a DIY or some info on changing the front brake pads on a 2014 Q5 2.0. I'm helping a buddy. He purchased what were listed as the correct pads but when we took the caliper off it had rectangular brake pads that were held in by two pins. He's getting the correct pads now but hoping for some input since the calipers and pads are different than any DIY or youtube video we found. Seems they changed some items in the 2014 models halfway through the 2013 production.

Anyone have any experience with these rectangular brake pads and pins?

    TIA!
    Josh

If they're the Brembo ones, try this:

Thanks, AudiDTMA4. While they are not Brembo brakes the setup looks the same (pins and rectangular pads) so this is indeed helpful.

Good, glad I was able to point you in somewhat the right direction.

The Q5 2.0T doesn't have pins like the Brembos. It has 2 bolts that you remove to detach the caliper.
You then need to push back the piston so you can install the new pads.
That's only if you decide not to replace the rotors which is not a good idea.
If you're also replacing the rotors you need to remove the two caliper carrier bolts.
The last thing you need to do when putting it all back together is replace the brake sensor on the drivers side and it's also recommended to purchase new hardware (bolts).

So yeah Brembo's are an apples to oranges comparison.

    Predictable. Not the same brah.

My quote "doesn't have pins like the Brembos."

    Brembo - retaining pins

    Not Brembo - guide pins

    Done!

For anyone else that may need help the two pins tap out, you remove the bracket, and then you can slide out the pads.

    Top Pin Tapping Out

    Pins

Thanks again to AudiDTMA4 for trying to help!

Are you sure he has a 2.0T? Those look like 3.0 brakes.

Resurrecting this thread because there's a lot of bad information from people that thought they knew what they were talking about. The facelift 2013 Q5 2.0t's received 4 piston brembo front calipers. They appear to be the the same caliper as the 3.0t, except the 3.0t caliper bolt holes are spaced out wider to be able to accommodate another 12.5mm's of rotor. They also use the same brake pads.
