Looking at a 04 S4. Lots of codes... Purchase at what price? or Run?

EDIT! I bought the S4! Now troubleshooting will start.

I am looking at a 2004 S4. I expected the codes to more clearly show timing issues but I am not sure what specifically they are showing. Was hoping for some help here. Car is fairly cheap and before I make any offers I need to know what kind of cash I might be throwing at this to get it running right. Interior is very nice, exterior is 6-7 of 10. and has low miles.

Engine runs rough, CEL on, if rev'd at all CEL is flashing.

Not scared of an engine pull or replacing timing components which is why was looking at this car. Possibly some electrical harness issues?

    Thanks in advance!

I'll let some of the S4 guys chime in, but cam position sensor and multiple cylinders misfiring could be timing. Although I'm guessing the motor and exhaust would sound a little off if the timing was off

Forgot to mention engine is running rough, CEL on, if rev'd was flashing. Will put that above! Thanks.

Sounds like it could be timing. I've seen in some cases where there's codes for cam position sensors on chain driven motors and the car acts like the timing is bad, but it's just electrical or a bad sensor and that fixes it. For me the biggest sign is if the exhausts sounds different from what it should. I know that sounds weird but if the timing is off it will cause the car to make a different noise as opposed to just a bad sensor that's causing a few misfires.

I'm with these guys...sounds like timing. Cost could be $3k - $10k depending on what TC service kit you buy and who does the labor (you or shop). Got any pics of the car?

the flashing CEL is misfires.... It seems like there's quite a few gremlins in this guy... doing the timing service and replacing the mechanical adjusters would definitely solve some of the issues. There are some of the other codes that I'm not too familiar with... if you're going to buy this car I would not run it until you complete the timing service... you will also likely have to replace the valves because they're probably bent... I would do a compression test and see what type of compression you get... although with bent valves it won't tell you what kind of shape the cylinder walls are in.

if you can get it for a song then i would fix the obvious electrical issue before diving into the timing. new battery, check grounds, check relay harnesses, replace engine-related relays, check ECU harness, and check the coil pack harness.

did you try clearing them all and resetting everything. then start it up again for a bit and see what pops up. half of those could be as simple as the battery got low and bad coil packs, or indicative of much larger problem(s)

I did not reset the codes. Going to take a chance on working a deal, hope to finalize in the next 2-3 hours and will go from there and see what happens! Will keep everyone posted.

I agree with this, a lot of those codes look like they came up due to low voltage at some point. I'd try clearing them and seeing if it runs any different.

Alright I bought it. I could part it out if the costs get too crazy based on what I paid and come out ahead.

Before I can go crazy and try to figure thus one out I need to finish my stage 3 allroad. Hope to be done next week with that!

    This S4 has 89K miles
    6 speed manual
    Clean title
    2 keys
    Aftermarket exhaust
    Bilstein coilovers.
Dent in driver fender and a couple in the driver door.
    And lots of CEL codes!!

Cleared all codes. Started up and ler if run for a minute or so. Here are the new codes. Removed all sections with no codes to shorten the post. Ran ok at first, the. Rough, guessing due to miss fires. Car has 3 more coils (used ) and 1 (new) camshaft sensor in the trunk.

Also gas cap issue? Gas light is blunking on the screen where it normally tells me a door is open.

I use a 3" buffing pad on a drill with some compound to remove tree sap and tar from paint. It's pretty forgiving and hard to screw up. And then just use an orbital buffer to polish out any swirls left behind. Have you cold-started the car yet? A chain rattle on cold start would definitely indicate the timing is bad. Otherwise I hope it's just a sensor and coils, that would be nice! Also it seems you've picked up some pretty sweet Audi's recently including this one... I'd like to come check them out one day! Will the Allroad be running soon?

Look up the guy from AMMO. NYC on YouTube. He might have a good method.

Other than that maybe try WD40. I used to sell it to a company that made ashphalt shingles it would emulsify the ashphalt. Might work with the tar.

Will be re-assembling engine and transmission tonight, working on piggie pipes and then hopefully going to get the engine back in the car over the long weekend depending on plans with the kids. I work in Denver so we will have to connect one day once I have it up and running!

Really hoping the sensor and coil swapping solves the issue on the S4. If so then I def. Stole it.

I've used a product specifically sold for removing tar, found near the car washes and waxes in the store, that worked great to remove it. I'm sure you could use some other solvent like wd40 or anything that's not too harsh for paint

Thanks all, I am actually thinking it is sap that has hardened and turned dark brown. That might be a but harder to get off. Will try some water destroyer in a couple spots tonight.
