CTS turbo intake installed.... strange noises

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    *UPDATED WITH VIDS

Put a CTS Turbo intake on my B8 Avant today..... I really don't like the sound in Drive mode just cruising around town. It has an extremely high pitched whistle when you are very low boost and the car keeps shifting gears. It only makes the throaty engine/turbo spool noise when past 75% throttle. But when the wife just cruises off stop lights and drives normal, it is an unbearable high pitched whistle..... I ran CTS turbo intakes on both my Golf R and my B7 2.0t and never had this whistle before..... I am stumped. If you drive in sport mode and keep the throttle 50% or more and shift on your own then the whistle doesn't really exist. So when I drive the car, I rarely hear the whistle. However, when the wife drives the car or I drive more calm with the baby in the car the whistle is very pronounced (especially with windows down)

*Is this what all intakes sound like on 8 speed automatics? I have always owned manuals and never had anything but turbo spool noises, so that is the only common denominator I can think of.

    *SPORT mode... 75% throttle

*Auto mode... 25% throttle (ANNOYING whistle)

It's the design of the K03, they all do it. That's why I sold my K&N and went back to my stock airbox.

The AEM intake has an optional cover which really cuts down on noise. I installed when I still had the k03 and tested without cover. It sounded like a cartoonish ant eater was trapped under my hood. Looking at AEM cover it doesn't look that complicated to make a cover to seal over top of opening with sheet metal. The stock air box really cuts the noise down, now with Franken Turbo, DV+ and AEM Air intake with windows down the car skins sounds like Nasty Darth Vader without the high pitch shriek of the k03.

I am wondering once my downpipe and HFC is installed and am running stage 2 if the difference in boost and noise from the downpipe will help out..... anyway, this is my first intake on (5) different turbo cars that I really can not stand the sound of. Kind of a disappointment

It won't, not unless you change the turbo. We have all been down this road.

I have the same intake, and I was getting a loud screech/whistle when the turbo started to spoo,l and thought it was the sound everyone was talking about. My wife hated it, but I thought it was normal. It was very noticeable when cruising between 2k and 3k RPMs under light throttle. No noticeable performance issues, and no CEL. Then I added a HFC and FMIC, then stage 2 tune, then I started to get the P0299 Underboost code, and after a smoke test, turns out that the wastegate diaphram wasn't sealing. Had to replace the turbo, and I was just out of my CPO warranty and at 76k miles, and the car was just tuned, so I didn't even try with AoA. I upgraded to the frankenturbo and now it's running better than ever!

    Well,
I have just started driving the car at 3/4 throttle or harder so I don't have to listen to the whistle.... it works but the Gas mileage is suffering!

The positive, is this intake does give a very nice grunt to the engine sound.... (when under 3/4 throttle or more)

Yeah, its a common issue from what I gather, and really put me off the idea of an intake.
Not sure if its a B8 thing only, not B8.5? I don't think I've heard an instance of this on a B8.5...

I don't know. i installed this intake on my car right before I tuned it, but for the week I had it on with the stock turbo, it sounded like this. Once I tuned the car, the turbo wouldn't hold boost. The sound and turbo failure might have been a coincidence.

Does anyone have one of these style intakes and not have this sound?

What I find the weirdest is that I have ran intakes on these turbo cars:
    -2003 jetta 1.8t
    -2004 wrx built motor
    -2006 A4 2.0t
    -2013 Golf R 2.0t

Never once, in my life has an intake ever made any noise other than turbo spool and wastegate.... And to think I ran CTS turbo intakes on my R and my A4 really has me scratching my head.....I am starting to get used to it with how I drive. City stop and go (paddle shifters and 50% + throttle) back county roads/Interstate auto mode just dont have to listen to the whistle as much. Hopefully a Downpipe/HFC and tune gets rid of some of it due to added boost

You'll find almost every turbo car ever sounds as expected with an open intake. Saabs, toyotas, subarus, nissans, opels, VWs, all of them! I don't know whats so screwed up on the k03 B8 A4s that result in this bizarre noise. I would have guessed its the diverter valve but apparently switching that out doesn't work either.

Theres been a bit of troubleshooting in this thread (with no success) - http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...-acceleration?

I sold my K&N because of the same issue, I thought it was a leak so I taped the seams, but to no avail it was just the sound the turbo made. I thought I read somewhere that someone polished the turbo fins or something in the turbo to lessen it, but that's more work than I would put into it and who knows if it actually did anything.

has anyone got the roc euro intake? It seems they state on their page that it doesn't make any of the "strange cruising-speed whistle some intakes have"

Good luck waiting for SuckEuro to ship that to you before a couple months.

Talk is cheap. They showed a quick rev but no cruising snips? Then claim no whistle? For 279 your better off building your own intake for way cheaper.

My B8.5 sounded just like the videos above when I tried out an open filter intake.

I've learned to live with it over the past 3 weeks. When the whistle starts annoying me I just give the car more throttle and or switch over to sport mode.

so basically there's no intake out there for the b8.5 that doesn't make the strange whistle?

I think if you get an intake where the open filter is enclosed, the whistle almost goes away. Think AFE just released an intake that is fully enclosed and there is another intake on ECStuning.com that is fully enclosed

It's the IHI turbo, not the intakes. I tried an intake with various levels of tuning from stock to stage 1 to stage2 with TMD, TIP, FMIC, DV+, Sound Box removed etc. It has to be something with the vanes in the JH5.
