B8.5 shift knob swap - help

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hey guys, I know this topic had been covered previously, but hoping someone might be able to throw some advice my way.

So following the DIY on here, I slowly heated and twisted the plastic rod 90 degrees to get the slot facing forward. I took an x-y-z measurement before and after, they look pretty close.

Problem is, when I go to install the 8.5 knob, pull out the safety plunger, I push down feel the clicks, then when I remove the zip tie, and the trigger just snaps in and doesn't seem to catch on anything.

Should the trigger stay in the "out" position when I remove the plunger and zip tie?

What am I doing wrong?? Thanks for your help AZ... =/ =/

How do you do that? Is that the issue when the button is pressed before install?

Audi sells a special tool (#T40203 ) for this purpose but you can make your own.

Use a medium gauge wire bend into the shape with a little kink on the tip as shown in the photo

YES that is correct. I didn't use that tool, all you have to do is pry and hold the trigger open, then I used a pick tool and stuck it in and pulled down the internal trigger mechanism, there is a good YouTube video showing how to do it

I swapped out a new shift knob on my b8.5 and when the shifter seated I couldn't press the button in. Like it felt locked and I couldn't press it in. Then pressed the button extra hard and it depressed but just stuck in and didn't seem to engage properly.

Any suggestions how to get the shift knob off or unlock it while it's installed?
