Need Help (Dash lighting up like 4th of July)

I get in my car today and start it. I get a quick prompt regarding replacing the battery in my key, then that goes away. I immediately get a TPMS malfunction error, parking brake malfunction, and more. I pulled the logs in VCDS and sent them over to my service adviser. He had a technician in it, and the tech claimed that I just need to replace the batteries in my key fobs. Strange... they both tested a 2.92=2.97v, which is perfectly fine. I replaced those batteries anyway since they're cheap. Still have an issue, and trying to erase the codes in VCDS immediately results in the codes coming back.

I replaced the car battery and coded it in VCDS in hopes that this would solve the issue. With a 5 year old battery that wasn't looking so good when I checked it in VCDS, it seemed like a sure-fire fix. Nooope, same problem.

Anyone got any ideas on this at all? I removed parts of the log that have no faults listed since the text amount is limited.

Replying to myself here, but I'm wondering if my outside air temperature sensor is damaged or missing. Reading up on some of the more serious faults I have, it seems those ambient temperature sensors become damaged or fall off of these cars pretty regularly. I no longer have an outside air temperature reading on my dash, so it's pretty obvious that sensor is at least one of my issues.

Anyone happen to know if that sensor is enough to cause all of these other lights to come on? TPMS, Brake, etc.

Strange...Did you check for evidence of rodents getting into any of the wiring harnesses? I know someone who went through something similar and it turned out that he had mice munching on his wires. They apparently like the soy-based wire insulation and decided to make themselves a nice snack.

That's weird as hell. It seems like a lot of the other modules reference a fault in the cluster. If the outside temp sensor connects to the cluster, and it's shorted out, that could explain it.

The sensor is near the hood latch. It attaches to the back of the grille. It's easy to pop the cover panel off so you can get to it. I'd check to see if it's been chewed on, like RockJGC suggested. It's also possible the harness was chafing against the AC condenser, and now it's shorted out. If the harness is ok, maybe try unplugging the sensor and see if there's any change.

Mine just did the exact same thing today! Beeped and said Parking brake malfunction, then beeped TPMS malfunction, then some other malfunction and like 4 lights on the dash came on.

Had something similar happen on my '13 S5...closer to what @T_Glass_27 described. It happened right before I arrived at the gym...I cleared the errors in VCDS, wiggled and checked the EPB calipers/connectors, checked the outside temp sensor in the same way. Went into the gym for an hour or so, came out, car started fine, no errors and the temp was being displayed again. Never had the issue again.

    I probably lucked out...

I wasn't aware you could get to the sensor without taking the bumper off. I'm going to go try that out real quick.

I don't have any evidence of rodents or anything like that. No water in the car where control systems are, etc. I'll check out that sensor and report back.

Yeah, they were definitely coming back immediately. I've got it figured out now. It is definitely the ambient air temp sensor. After inspecting it, there's some exposed wire on the end of it. After pushing the insulation back over the wire and restarting the car I had a temperature readout on my dash once again. The codes still persisted even after wiping them, so I was heading down to the dealership. After about 2 miles of driving the TPMS, EPC and Parking errors all went away and I was left with a check engine light only. Instead of going to the dealership I went back home, wiped the DTCs, and went out for a test drive. No more errors, no more faults. I left a voicemail for my service advisor to have him order me a new ambient air temp sensor and schedule an appointment to have it replaced.

I'm keeping the new battery even though it wasn't the issue. The car was still starting fine, but since it didn't test all that well in VCDS I figured I might as well just keep it in there and not have to deal with battery issues any time soon.

Thanks all for the help and input!

You'll probably need to repair the harness. The actual sensor doesn't have any wires.

Oddly enough, the dealership also said the sensor is right by the hood latch, but that's not the case. It's actually attached to the bottom of the crash bar, so when I replace this I'm going to have to take the front bumper off.

I'm also discovering, slowly but surely, that the CPO warranty is utter bullshit. It will cost me more to replace this sensor under warranty than it will to replace it myself. This is now the second or third time I've had an issue with the car that either isn't covered under warranty or costs more to cover under warranty. I stayed awake last night thinking about selling it, to be honest. I love my S5, but if I'm going to be dealing with stupid shit like this, the trunk latch breaking and FOB issues, I may very well just dump it.

Totally possible. The only reason I go to this dealership is because the next closest one is over an hour away. Maybe it's worth the drive though if it means not getting jerked around when trying to use my warranty.

Edit: BTW, there is a plug right by the hood latch, but that one wasn't my issue. The sensor that's attached to the grill is the Homelink system. My errors came back yesterday when my wife and I were heading to the grocery store, so I wiggled the wire attached to the sensor that's on the crash bar, restarted the car, and the errors all went away again.

I don't have a good picture of the sensor, but I'll take an old photo real quick and mark the area of the sensor I'm talking about.

This is the sensor that is the issue. It looks like the ambient air sensor to me, but I've now had a few different people tell me that it's right by the hood latch. Am I crazy, or.....?

(Yes, the crash bar is Flexidipped, but I did cover this sensor when I dipped it. The bar has been dipped for about 2 years without any issues to the sensor, so it's fair to say Flexidip is not to blame)

Maybe the mounting location is different between a B8 and an 8.5? I remember mine was up near the garage door opener and I had to relocate it when I put my RS5 grille on.

Every Google image I've found is consistent with the location you're saying the B8 has, for sure. Mine is mounted exactly where it was mounted from the factory. My location didn't have to change at all when I put the RS5 grille on. My homelink system sits behind the rings.

Honestly, I think I may not even need a new sensor though. I think what I need to do is get some of that shrink tubing and re-sheath the wires. I've got the smallest length of wire that's become exposed over time, and I believe that's what is resulting in the problem. When I use my fingers to bump the sheath of the wire over the small section of exposed wires, that's when my problem goes away. I suppose I have to look at this as an opportunity to clean a few things up though, that way I'm not so sour about taking my bumper off. At least when I take the bumper off I can give the crash bar a good re-spray, even though it still looks good after 2 years. I can also touch up those white tabs that show up in my grill. They have always driven me nuts, but I just never did anything about them.
