Value from Audi Certified Pre-Owned Warranty?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hello,

I'm in the process of searching for a used S4 with a MT. Acknowledging that every car is different, I'm hoping to hear from you about your experience with the Audi CPO warranty. Have you benefitted from having the extended warranty (by eliminating maintanence/repair costs)? Or have you found that it just provides "peace of mind?"

Said another way, do you think a CPO warranty is a "must?"

    Thanks for your great input.

I was very pleased with the CPO warranty on my 2007 A4; it saved me at least four digits, including a seal replacement valued $600 - $750, plus time. I decided it was strongly preferred to an aftermarket warranty on the purchase of my S4. With my A4, I found that the interaction with the CPO warranty built rapport with my local dealership and they were more apt to "go to bat" for me and take care of me. Depending upon the dealership, you may have a different experience if you mod the car.

After the CPO and AudiCare expired, the dealership understood that my son and I performed a significant amount of our own maintenance but still treated us fairly whenever we had issues. We will see how far that rapport extends when I take the S4 into them for the startup chain rattle TSB this fall ;-). Praying everything goes well.

My 2013 S4 was CPO. I used it almost immediately for an oil leak that was coming from the rear timing cover. They had to drop the transmission and exhaust in order to get to it. I was glad I didn't have to do it. The car I purchased was immaculate and had every service done at Audi and I still ended up using the warranty. I'll likely have to use it again before it's expired.

As far as a "must", I'd say it depends on if you like to wrench on your car. Lots of little things can be done easily enough in your own garage..plus it's $85 each time you utilize the CPO warranty. But if you're not really a DIY type person, it might save you some money in the long run. Might want to check this out as well: http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...O)-Information

i think i used my CPO warranty once and it was for the replacement of a seal on the center dif. that was leaking. It was a nice reassurance, however now that its ended i'll probably have something serious break.

I have it on my 2013. I haven't needed it in the year of ownership though. But having that piece of mind is worth it, in my opinion.

As of this past week, I am now on my 3rd CPOd'd Audi, and did not have to utilize the warranty on either of the previous two. With the DSG and Sport Diff, I specifically want to have some factory warranty and the added piece of mind of the CPO.

CPO dosen't cover any maintenance. The best part of CPO, IMO, is that the car is suppose to be inspected and everything brought up to OEM spec. If you discover anything that isn't, they will do so.

I bought my S4 with 6 months of factory warranty remaining. I figured if there was something majorly wrong with it, I would know before the warranty ran out. 40,000 miles later and the CPO would have saved me all of $150 in repairs. I'll hit 100K by next year.

I say it depends on you. If you are a very capable mechanic with a decent garage you will be fine without it when issues come up. I'm an amateur and don't even have a garage anymore, so things like CPO and warranties are worth it.

Another thing to consider if you're buying from Audi dealership... My car's CPO only had 6 months remaining at the time of purchase, and I wanted coverage for as long as possible. So, I had them remove CPO so the price of the vehicle could drop, and then i negotiated cost on a bumper-to-bumper extended warranty. Negotiate this as best as you can, extended warranties are a big money maker for dealerships. I have coverage for 5 years now instead of 6 months. I know the sports diffs can leak, and the control arms can have problems on the B8 and those weren't anything I have the time to figure out.

My 2013 S4 is CPOd and I have used it for an oil sensor and my motor mounts. Saved me about $1600. If you're not going to mod it,I think it's a must have. If you are, then start a rainy day fund.

Also, I do most of my own maintenance and my dealer hasn't had a problem with it. However they know how anal and nitpicky I am about my car so they're sure it's getting everything done to spec or better. Could they reject a claim based on not having done the maintenance themselves, yes(ish). They said that as long as I have the documentation showing what I used, I should be good. I have all my recipes, I have photos and videos of removing the old parts/changing oil, etc with the clean filters/spark plugs with the odo clearly visible then the dirty ones with the odo clearly visible reading the same mileage so there's no way to possibly dispute it.

I like the CPO and I would get it again

Well, for me, all repairs (sunroof rattle - 1100; alternator - 1200; engine rattle tsb - 1800; gateway - 700; B&O door speaker - 400) were done under 4/50K new car warranty. I haven't harvested a dim on my CPO warranty. The car became trouble free since new car warranty expired! I only been to dealership once for 55K maintenance during last 15 months.

Can't remember, but I called my local Audi service dept and they said there are never any issues when dealing with extended warranties from other Audi dealerships.

Those random online warranties don't typically cover Audi, and they even said that the dealerships will offer way better deals. Those online ones can also require an adjuster to come in person to check a claim, so car could be in for a while. Check your local shop, maybe they work with a certain warranty company.

Well played. You still got the value of the CPO inspection and probably some new bits to bring the car up to spec (brakes, tires, etc).

    Stock 2012 S4 currently with 100k miles

Bought it CPO at 40k miles. Used the CPO warranty once for a $40 piece of molding that fell off the door. Even if the CPO covered to 100,000 miles it wouldn't have been worth the markup in car price. Still going strong with no issues.

They say CPO adds $2K to dealer cost, FYI.

That is to say, a CPO car from a dealer should be priced about $2K higher than a similar model at CarMax, etc.

In canada it adds $2300, however it drops the finance interest rate when you finance through Audi/VW by 2% in my case

That's good to know. I've gotten quotes that they were $3300 (Edit Correction). What does CPO cover? Does it cover consumables? If not, then what's considered a consumable wear item?

Is CPO needed if extended warranty is purchased? I mean, assuming you can get Extended warranty cheaper.

No, CPO doesn't cover consumables. I would consider things like brakes, tires, wipers, etc as consumables, which the dealer is happy to perform those replacement services at a 100% out of pocket expense to you.

No, I guess not. They are essentially the same. Other than you won't have a deductible if you need something repaired under warranty with CPO. Typically there is a deductible with 3rd party extended warranties, from what I recall.

Some dealers try to make money on it, I was told $1650 is the dealers cost. CPO will be cheaper than any other because AOA really subsidizes the cost. For what's covered none is going to be better, and if your SA is looking out for you it's the phenomenal. I just picked up my 5th CPO S4. IMPORTANT! Make sure you check the in service date of the car you want!

covered headlight washer replacement, thermostat, and water pump for me so far. got 1.5 years left on my CPO warranty though.

Didn't using my CPO warranty on my last car for anything (e92 335i) but I did use the factory warranty to cover my turbos just before it ran out; I supposed if I waited a bit longer to address it, my CPO warranty would have covered me.

Between me, my wife and children I've owned about 70 years worth of vehicles. Had I purchased CPO/aftermarket for the few years after the factory warranty expired I would of spent about $30,000.

During that time I spent about 6K in items that may have been covered had I had the extra warranty.

Is there value? Is it worth it?, of course not, they wouldn''t push it so hard if they were losing money. If you can fix things yourself then it is even more one sided

Got my thermostat, sport diff seals and fluid, instrument cluster, 3 door sensors(front one is now failing but CPO is expired) all changed under CPO. Definitely worth it.

For insurance companies its all house money. Statistically speaking you are unlikely to ever come close to using the full value of your CPO warranty. It's like one of those all you can drink bars for $50 dollars, 99% of the people can't drink $50 worth of alcohol. You're better off taking the money and putting it in an interest bearing account and using it if needed. And I should know - I work for an insurance company LOL.
Life has taught me never try to make something idiot proof, they'll simply come up with a better idiot.
I'd agree with you but then we'd both be wrong.
I have neither the time, nor the crayons to explain this to you properly.

You should pick my next car, lol. I had terrible luck with my A4, about $10k of warranty work done and needed about $5k more when I sold it.
