    S4 vs. GmC Typhoon???

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
To make a long story short, i was driving the other day to go pick up my car from the dealership when a green/black truck pulls up next to me at the stoplight. I glance over only to see it's a middle aged guy with his son. After several minutes of waiting for the light, it finally turns green and I accelerate like normal. Before i could even shift into second i hear a loud rumble followed by a *Pfffssshh* (my best BOV impression). This guy launched this suv like he was racing to save his son's life! In a matter of seconds he was like 3-4 car lenths in front of me and he kept pulling. Naturally, being the sis ball i am (have a ticket pending) i calmly pull into my dealership only to see him go past WOT at like 85-90mph. The truck sounded nuts by the way!!! My question for you guys is, what would it take to beat him??? And how much HP can typhoon's make??? by the way, i have a stock 00's4 tip. thx.

note: craziest truck i've seen so far!!

iirc....those trucks made around 300ish hp, and ran low 13's. the stock block can produce some real serious hp #'s

    For the specs, use google.
For the rest, if you really want to embarass him, use a corner.

There are a few guys on a local street racing board that have the Sy/Ty's and they are really potent. They are not that reliable, but 400WHP is not at all unreasonable. He probably would have smoked you pretty bad. Stage 2+ and you may give him a good run. One thing to remember with those trucks is that NO ONE leaves them stock.

the ty stock is a 14sec truck but as stated, these trucks are rarely stock. 380hp & 450lb-ft with simple upgrades aren't unheard of. the trucks are a bitch sonetimes and poor tuning yields slower times. on stock turbo there are some in the low 12's.
Honestly the S4 is a better vehicle, stage 2 with a great launch would be mandatory. the ty's pull 1.6 60's all day long. gotta love torque.

I currently own both. My Ty is fairly stock and my S4 is K04ed. I havent raced the two yet, but the Ty will take the S4 from a stop, the boost lanuches in it are amazing. But after that the S4 would pull it pretty good. If the guy had a BOV it probably wasn't near stock. Mid-Low 12s are not a problem. Lets see, Ultimate 9-1 chip, Alkycontrol kit, 3" exhaust, 100 octane and 18 PSI on the stock turbo will do the trick. They go through trannys and front propshafts and are hard to get dialed it. Mine needs its third trans here pretty soon. Once I get the proper tuning for my S4 I will see if I can find someone to drive my Ty and well see what happens.

Yup, the Ty/Sy's are beast of trucks. and can produce power like no other. I have a couple friends with them, one is a nicely blown Typhoon, the other is a relatively stock Syclone. I Autocross (Solo II) with the Syclone and regularly beat him, even with him on race rubber.

I think there are some of those things in the 8's now. Crazy shit, but I still think my Spirit R/T is the biggest sleeper out there.

    Hey 11secS4........

Do you think your spirit r/t could take the typhoon??? And one more nub question, what's the difference between a TYPHOON and a CYCLONE????? I could just search for it but im feeling kinda slow today. I think its cause i bumped my head getting outta my car today. Well......that and i drank the night b4.

    cheers.

The Typhoon is based off the Jimmy platform and the Syclone (with an "S") is based off the S-10 platform. Both have the same drivetrain. Basically one is an SUV (Ty) and one is a pick-up (Sy).

BTW Those spirit R/Ts are sweet. I had a GLHS, not quite the sleeper as the R/T, but it was still fun. That had the T2 motor though. How close is the T3 motor to the SRT4 motor? Specs seem pretty similar.

I am pretty sure a Stock SyTy shouldn't have a problem w/ a stock R/T from a dig, from a roll it might be a different story.

Stock Spirit R/T vs a stock Typhoon? Typhoon was a bit quicker in the 1/4 mile. I think the R/T would get it upstairs, though.

As for my Spirit R/T vs one of the Typhoons in this thread? I have no idea, but my Spirit went 13.3 @ 104 back before I ditched the balance shafts and added the custom FMIC. I also run drag radials now, so it's probably running around a 12.9 to 13.0 @ 106-107.

Which GLHS did ya have, the '86 Omni or the '87 Charger? Omni was around a hundred pounds lighter, but the Charger was way more aerodynamic! Sweet cars. The GLHS' weren't true Turbo IIs because Shelby didn't shell out the extra coin to put in the T2 bottom end or the A555 trans. They were T1s with all the T2 hardware and go fast goodies minus the T2 bottom end and A555 trans.

The T3 and SRT-4 engines are totally different. Different displacement, pistons, rods, crank, head, etc. The T3 used the Lotus 16v head which was only used in Spirit R/Ts and Daytona Iroc R/Ts. It's a pretty decent flowing head, but the heads are prone to cracking due to steel core plugs (doh!) It's an easy fix once the head is off, but that's not a simple job. Well, it may be simple compared to say the S4...

Whatcha got done to your 'phoon?

It was an 87 Charger, #991. Picked it up w/ a droped valve seat & half apart from a towing yard auction. I couldn't believe it when I saw it there, got it for 125 bux. I picked up a rebuilt non-turbo head, swapped in the turbo valves and swapped that in, along w/ cleaining everything up, redoing all the vac lines, made my own IC lines, cleaned up the interior a bit and added a boost guage and nice seat. I kinda wish I still had it, it was a blast to drive, just lots of little things wrong w/ it that I didn't have the time to fix. Ill own another older TD someday though.

My Ty is pretty much stock aside from MSD ignition, Blitz BOV, 3" exhaust, BBK TB, aluminum CCHE, high-flow IC pump and an Ultimate chip (9 different programs in one chip). It needs a trans right now though, 3-4 band is slipping on the highway and it shifts w/ full line pressure when cold for some reason. (Damn GMC 700R4, I broke two of them in a month) I may need to sell it after I fix it to help pay off the S4 unfortunatly.

BTW where did you get your R/T? Got any pics of it? I don't know much about them as you can prob. tell, but do know that are pretty special cars.

Those things certainly don't go down the track in style, but you can't argue with those numbers.

*Oh, and I also wanted to add that watching OZ's avant go down the track brings a tear of joy to my eye.

I cant beleive you guys are praising old omni's, chargers and spirits.

Perhaps I wasnt old enough back then to appreciate them, but come on.

american cars in the 80s and early 90s are NOTHING to rave about.

Talk about an E30 M3 or even a 5 speed 740 turbo, not mock american muscle

My cousin's 91 Spirit R/T put down 500 HP / 514 TQ to the wheels, and that's on stock internals. They are stupid fast by any day's standards. Here he is at the track about to show an EVO tails

Well, I guess Dr Evil already left to drop off a Taurus SHO in Wisconsin, so I'll update you on his behalf. He is dealing with some kind of sickness. A sickness that can only be cured by rare, oddball and limited edition cars. Within the last few days, he went out and picked up a '91? Spirit R/T.
I'll let him tell you about it, in a SHOForum thread. http://www.shoforum.com/showthread.php?t=58669

The paint looks like hell, but even with all its problems, I guess it still goes like hell.
