    Rs6 tranmission problems

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hello. Ive had my rs6 for couple of months now and the transmission is acting up. I took it to waterfest but in ny it started to shift rough. I drove it home 600 miles abd the first two gears were very rough. Sometimes it didnt engage and some times it would slip and then catch. Now i just wanted to move it and i backed it up 10 yards but then i stopped and it doesnt do anything any more. I have restarted but no change. Has any one experienced this too or knows what the problem is. Tcu? Torque convertor? Transmission? Low oil level? Some times it will also illuminate all letters instead of just the one gear its in. Any help is greatly appriciated

If all letters are illuminated, your transmission is in limp mode. You should scan for codes. When this happened on my S6, it was time for a new trans. You may get better/more feedback on rs6 site.

Transmission needs a rebuild and probably new TC too. Somewhat common problem, unfortunately. Best option is a 01E 6sp swap. Otherwise ship to to Tozo for a rebuild. Lots of info on rs6.com.

+1 to Dave's comment. The transmission was the C5 RS6's Achilles heel.

Yes, agreed w/ mr dave, best option is the 6-speed manual swap. I did this with my S6. Not only is rowing through the gears more enjoyable, it sheds quite a bit of weight up front, so she understeers a bit less now.

Ok thanks for the information. Rs6.com is not allowing me to register. Id love to go to the manual but i cant find how much this will cost. Can someone give me a rough estimate on what both options will cost?

You can still search rs6.com by using google and entering "site:rs6.com transmission rebuild" for example.

If you turn your own wrenches you can do a proper 6sp swap for around $7k. I think a good 5hp24a rebuild + TC is around $5k. Add another 2-3k for either if a shop does it for you.

I was quoted 7-10K for a 6sp swap. This was from two reputable shops.

Shit. Why so expensive? What about rebuilding my trans with all oem parts? The car is not my dd and drives not more than 5k a year. Because of this i rather dont spend too much on just the trans

Like others have said, the transmission is the weak point on this car. All the shops I have talked to have said "It's not if, but when the transmission fails". If you're going to rebuild the tranny you might as well upgrade it along with TC. That should run somewhere around 5K.

Welcome aboard the life of being an RS6 owner! Your transmission is on the way out. Fact of life owning an RS6.....

You do NOT need to swap the 5Tip out for a 6spd no. There are probably a couple of dozen owners that have done this now either because they desire the 6spd lifestyle, or for whatever reason felt a replacement auto was a risk. I can tell you with no uncertainty that an auto that has been appropriately built and with an updated torque convertor, that you will be just fine.

Cost to put in a properly rebuilt auto with updated TC is a nominal $3K for the tranny, $750 for the TC, and a nominal $1.5-2.5K (depending on shop) for labour
Cost to put in a 6spd sway is double that if you are using new parts and someone else is performing work. (tranny, front drive axles, center drive axle, rear differential if gearing doesn't match, clutch, custom flywheel, brake/clutch pedal assembly, shifter assembly, tranny mounts, slave, ABS switch, TCU/ECU programming, etc.

Bottomline, you REALLY want to have the 6spd to go through the effort IMO....

Go to the dedicated forum on the model RS6.com and you will be enlightened with more info.

Best of success to whatever route you elect to go.

Im goin to change the oil and throw in some lucas oil too. Hopefully i get one last joy ride lol. Then park it and start tearing it apart. Hopefully i can find some good DIY. I ve got a few friends and mechanics that will help me get through it. I think im going with the automatic box again. Thanks again everyone for the information. Seems like ice got more problems than just the trans. But ive got all winter and winters are long in canada

One thing I would say is brush up on the refill procedure for these boxes as you need to fill it up when the transmission oil temp is at the 40c point, and it will get past that temperature pretty quickly on idle.

I was planning on just adding some oil. Since its probably low on oil. I read through the service record and this was done twice an fixed the issue twice. The last time it was done was 4k before i bought it

Is there oil leaking at seals or pan gasket? You need to have a pretty 'wet' tranny to be at a point that a fluid top up fixes the problems you cite....

I'll probably have one for sale later this year too. Perfect working condition, BND fluids, ~54k miles.
