Can ball seat lug nuts damage aftermarket wheels requiring conical seat nuts?

My wife took the car to get a flat repaired today. I had the wheel w/ the flat tire in the trunk and the spare tire installed. The spare had the OEM ball seat lug nuts on but after they did the repair, they used the same OEM ball seat lug nuts to mount my aftermarket (Avant Garde) wheels despite my wife telling them to switch the lug nuts. She noticed this as soon as they handed her the keys back; she didn't drive it off the lot. They changed it after it was pointed out to them.

Can this cause any damage to my wheels?

Depending on the amount of Torque used, it might have done a little something to the hole. Have it double checked! I have a feeling all it did was just torque down to wherever the ball seat shape met closest to the conical. Perhaps not much occurred.

Your wife did the right thing - you obviously trained her right! Many people with aftermarket wheels that use conical bolts forget to carry a set (of 5) OEM ball seat lugs in the trunk with the spare. You could probably get by driving a short distance without the correct lug type, but I wouldn't chance doing that if at all possible.

In Tire Racks PDF "Owners Manual", it specifically states (on page 5): "The lug seats have to mate properly to the wheel in order to properly secure it to the vehicle’s hub. Using the wrong lug bolt or lug nut can damage the wheel and allow the wheel to work its way loose as you drive!"

Damage is unlikely... But I would find a new tire shop. Not following instructions sadly ,is hardly atypical. Giving your wife back an unsafe car is totally unacceptable.

Yea I had stressed to her that's it was really important they used the correct lug nuts and to make sure to have them show her the lug nuts and key before she even gets in the car.

Anyways, Had a chance to take the lug nuts off to check for damages this morning. Looks like everything is okay and didn't notice any vibrations or new noise.

Just wished they had followed instructions first time around.
