    Allroad 4.2 manual swap

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Can anyone point me to information on swapping a manual in to a 4.2 Allroad? I bought my B6 3.0 w/01E back from my brother-in-law. I am thinking about finding a good 4.2 allroad to do a manual swap in to instead of troubleshooting the A4. I am just trying to figure out what I can reuse from my A4 and what I would have to purchase.

Only thing useful will be the slave and line and pedals. The rest although some may fit is not going to be what you want in the end. Trans ratios are not desirable for the 4.2. Axles are wrong, clutch flywheel is wrong, driveshaft is wrong.

I've done it a couple times and sold a half dozen kits. You are going to need a lot of parts most from the B6 can't be used.

Thanks guys. I didn't know how much other than the transmission its self would swap. That's why we have you Scotty.

I am curious about it having the wrong gearing for a for the 4.2. Audi put that same trans ratio and final drive behind other V8s.

My first swap was a 4.2 chain in place of a 2.7T in my 6MT allroad. The gearing is no better/worse with the 4.2 than the 2.7T. First is very short but the car weighs 4300lbs. The 2.7T is rated at 250HP and the 4.2L 300HP but they performed virtually identical to one another IMO. They behave differently obviously because NA/turbo but neither was noticeably up/down on power relative to the other. I'm likely the only person in the country that has had a 2.7T and 4.2L in (literally) the same vehicle. The trans gearing really gets to be an issue when you start getting up in HP. Stage III for the 2.7T etc. You wind out first in no time. In stock form the gearing really makes up for the weight and lack of power.
I agree that you want to get a complete swap kit or a complete car. There's all sorts of misc. goodies you need and they can be difficult and/or expensive to get separately. If you want to invest sweat equity, buy a cheap 6MT parts car. You can part out the remainder of the car and break even or even make money. That's what I did, you just have to know what parts of the car go for reasonable money and what's not worth your time. EG vehicle ECU's, door blades etc.

I know it has been a while, but I am curious about a couple things. I have a chance to buy a mint 4.2, but I am thinking about holding off to find a good 2.7TT. I would be swapping both.

What are the pros and cons between the two? Are there any ways to eek more performance out of the 4.2? I would probably only be going stage I or II on the 2.7TT

My impression of the 4.2 in the C5's has always been that if you want a notable (worthwhile) increase in power, it's going to cost you a lot.

Regarding the 01E swap, the highway gearing really sucks on the allroads. Freeway limit is 75 in many areas of my state, meaning I drive close to 85 with good road and traffic conditions, and I'm well over 3000rpm at these speeds.

I've been kicking around the idea of a manual swap in one of my 4.2 cars for a while, but if I put that much work into it I would also be installing a JHM supercharger, and at a minimum getting a transmission with the TDI gearset from Advanced Automotion.

I love the 2.7T and it is certainly cheaper to make more power from that engine vs. the 4.2. I just really, really, really love the sound of the 4.2, and for this reason my V8 C5's have always been my favorites.

There a 4.2 01E allroad for sale in Quebec. A little far away from me so I haven't checked it out personally.

That thing...is something. Someone swapped at least that v8 into the allroad as the v8 allroad used the chain driven v8 from the b6/b7 s4 and that's the belt driven v8. I'm guessing it was a manual 2.7t car originally but that is an interesting choice of an engine swap.
