    Lost only key

So I lost my only key. What's the cheapest way to replace? Im wondering if I can order a new set of locks and keys from a part out. especially since the driver side lock is damaged and needs to be replaced. Question is can I use vag com to program new key or do I have to go to the dealer?

Specifically, how do you know there is no immobilizer on your car?

If indeed, there is no immobilizer, then this is reasonably cheap. You need to go to the dealer (borrow a friend's cavalier or take an uber or something, lolz) and order a "secondary key" with your VIN number. The "Secondary Key" is just a flat key with no moving parts and no remote and costs about $50, cut to your VIN. The part number will be 8L0837185A or 8L0837185B, depending on model year or something, I believe.

Once you have that, find a locksmith that will copy sidewinder keys and get some duplicate keys like a reasonable person would have. lol

If you want a remote, you should instead order a "main key", which will be part number 4D0837246B and costs about $70, cut to your VIN. This is just the top part of the switchblade key. You can get the bottom remote half on ebay and program it yourself with VCDS. Myself, I would just get the cheapest VIN-cut key I could get (the secondary key) at the dealer and the get the heck out of there. Then get the entire remote with blank on ebay (and maybe another flat key blank while you're there) and take your whole pile o' keys to your friendly neighborhood locksmith and get them cut for $10 or $15 each.

I'm in the same boat, except I didn't lose my only key yet.

I have a spare set of locks but I don't know how to install them.
    Key fob is 315mhz.
The car uses Immo3 and the RFID chip within the key fob is a Megamos ID48.

imnuts has a write-up obtaining the cluster SKC PIN, which is needed to program a new immo key. I heard this can be done using a specific free VAG-Tacho software, using VCDS/Vag-Com booted in 'Dumb Mode'.
Not sure though, not too familiar with the thread, haven't read it.

One thing that makes this difficult, is that the ignition key lock cylinder has two bolts holding it in, that are tamper-proof and need to be drilled out. I'm not sure if this can be done within the car from underneath, laying upside down in the footwell, or if you need to pull the steering column out.

Hopefully the previous owner of my car did not keep the other three keys, if he wants to come get his car back in an emergency.
When there's a will, there's a way, and a potential car-thief (this is not a Lamborghini) COULD use the above methods to figure it out. And for that, maybe there is comprehensive insurance, or also installing a hidden kill-switch.

I hear it's easier to just hammer a screwdriver into an old Honda Civic ignition.

Interesting. Did not know they can ship you a cut key from the VIN.

Speaking of Immo3, I think B7 is Immo4, and MKIV Jetta had Immo2 (no immo) for early 1999.5'MY but Immo3 for later, such as an '04 1.8T GLI.

After this, thinking about B7 key fob mod, or renewing the buttons on original fob.
Hopefully the fragile red panic button doesn't fall off.

    Lost only key

Even tho the immo is defeated and the car will start and drive you will still have the immo light flashing and hazards will be on because the cluster is not coded to the key. My 2 year old had hid my only key so I went to the dealer to get a new key and they tried telling me it wouldn't work. I kinda laughed at them knowing it was defeated but it somewhat works but doesn't because you have hazards on that won't turn off. My key showed up a day after I paid 160 for a new flip key

    Well damn! This sounds horrible!
I really would like to install a ignition cylinder and replace the other two locks because I had some brilliant thugs try using a screw driver hammered in my driver side door lock. They tried to force the tumblers. Well that didn't work and they smashed the window. Lol. So if I replaced the locks with someone else's ignition switch could I just take the key and car to the dealer to get the immo set? Or would it have to be a brand new key?

Yep, the immo defeat only affects the ECU, so the engine still runs but the cluster thinks the car is stolen and panics.

No one has a cluster based immo defeat (which would solve that) afaik... so you'll need to match new transponders.

remotes are different and easy with just vagcom.

If he buys the vin-cut key (either the flat "secondary" key or the "main" flip key head) it will have the appropriate IMMO tag which he can program with VCDS (with a successful SKC PIN dump using his tool of choice). Or he can pony up 8 million dollars, tow the car in and have the dealer do everything. An "ace" locksmith could do all of this in the field (including decoding the lock and cutting a key), but I'd imagine those guys that could actually handle this are rare.

Well thanks for the help. I'm going to keep searching for the key. Lol. God I hope I find it. I'm going to hate handing over 8 million

    vagcom.
If one had the SKC for the old cluster and doner cluster...could they not just set the donor cluster to "virgin mode"?
