Best Coils and Plugs for a mildly tuned 1.8t?

So I'm starting to get a random misfire again, and I'm out of spare coils. I'm thinking of finally upgrading to the R8 style coil, but I'm wondering if there's a definitive "best" coil and plug set up. Right now I'm running a stage 1+ tune on a stock turbo, but will be going GT28R soon.

You'll get a lot of recommendations on coils and plugs from others here in a bit. I'm interested in why you are going with the R vs the RS? It is proven to outperform the R in virtually every way. Unless of course you ran into a crazy deal you will be back at the "hp alter" in no time flat looking for more.

If you are SERIOUS about coilpacks Okada Plasma Direct is a no cost-spared option @ $150-200 EACH. No one has complained about them blowing up on here. Of course nothing is perfect.

That's basically it. I bought an Eliminator GT28R that needed to be rebuilt for $100. The rebuilder quoted me $350 to rebuild it, so $450 for a larger ball-bearing, bolt on option sounds like a pretty damn good deal. Of course I'm going to need supporting upgrades to take full advantage of it, but $450 for a $1,500 turbo is hard to pass up.

Iridium plugs and either the 06E or 07K coils - no adapters, spacers, hold downs, etc. are needed.

Have the Eliminator turbo (GT2871R) and am using R8/A4 TFSI 2.0T ignition coils (OEM Audi or VW) along with NGK BKR7EIX-11 plugs gaped at 0.028". Excellent combination. If you're changing from 1.8T to 2.0T ignition coils and plugs, you may also want to invest in spacers that will sit between the longer ignition coil and the valve cover. Not really required, but helps to make sure nothing gets in and helps to make sure you don't press the coils down too far to damage them.

Also... sometimes random misfires does not always mean the ignition coils are bad. There can be other things that contribute to misfires. Coils and plugs are the cheapest and first things to check (swap around and see if misfire follows the swap). Vacuum leaks can also lead to misfires. I've been dealing with that lately after replacing coils and plugs. Still had misfires, and found a ripped vacuum line.

When upgrading to the Eliminator, you'll want different injectors (550cc) and a proper tune. I love Motoza for custom tuning my setup. They will start you with a safe setup and fine tune along the way to the optimum configuration for your car.

I'm definitely going to look into it a little more before throwing parts at it, but it feels just like when my last coil failed. I'll scan it and swap them around to make sure it follows the coil, even it's just so I know which one to throw in the trash when I change them.

And I plan on going Motoza when I do my turbo swap. I've heard nothing but good things.

It's true you can open up the gap for 2.0T coils when using copper plugs correct? I read something like either .40 or .44 can be used or would that risk blowing the spark out under boost?

Yes, opening up the gap is the point of upgrading the coils. .028" is stock.

On the NGK plugs (NGK BKR7EIX-11) the "-11" at the end of the part number designates 1.1mm - 1.1mm is .044". These plugs are preferred because they come pre-gapped. If your car doesnt like them, close the gap a bit. My car prefers .042".

    Okada?
Gonna have to check if that one works accross various applications, because if I get them one day when budget allows, my engine is currently stock. But am told Stage 1+ is a must to wake it up, which Axis has. Yet here is OP, upgrading from that, suggesting it's not enough.
Meaning I hope these can work for either.

The price makes it look like a reason to finally get a removal tool too, to preserve it.
I pried with a flathead screwdriver, but on a V6 (difficult access because of the angle)

    Unless people are using zipties.

Yeah I've never had a problem just pulling on them... do they get stuck in some climates or something?

Sometimes the ignition coil may require a little more effort to pull up and out as the rubber boot will form a tight seal within the hole. Fingers under both extensions of the top of the ignition coil and force applied up usually does the trick. Otherwise a flat blade screwdriver works too as a pry bar to lever it up.

If moving up to the 2.0T setup now with the stock turbo, check the gap to be at .040" (don't assume the pre-gap is set correctly). Once you go with the larger turbo, then look at a smaller gap of .028"

These coilpack threads make me lol.
I'm on the latest revision coils with ngk bkr7eix's to a factory gap for over 50000 miles, mostly on the stage 1+ 93 file from motoza. For the past 10k or so I've been running his 550cc e85 file.... Not a single ignition related issue for the past 3 years.

People who ask about R8 coils are strictly concerned with being able to tell their friends they have shiny red R8 parts in their engine bay.

There's no measurable benefit except the dopamine high from showing off your sick ass red coil packs.

    End rant.

I think he was asking which specific year model of TFSI coils to source, not when it was that you put them on your car, although knowing it has been 2 years is good to know as many of the cheap coils go after 6 months!
