Traction Control, ABS, Flashing Brake Light

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I just purchased a 2002 S4 and the traction control, abs, and brake light are on. The brake light is actually flashing and the other lights remain on. I was wondering if anyone had that tool that could reset these sensors? I live in the GTA and could meet up with you. I prefer not taking it to Audi because they will charge an arm and a leg just to look at it so if anyone local could help me out that would be great, I'm sure it won't take long for the experienced person. The car is from the States if that helps anyone. Thanks for your help.

someone with a VAG-COM can scan your ECU for fault codes. Either the dealer can or a few members on this forum can do so.

If they are on all the time, there's something wrong. Could be a sensor that has gone bad if your ABS light is on (hopefully), at worse, your ABS control unit is bad. As for brakes, could be pads that are worn out or again the sensor or the wire for the sensor is bad.

I'm located in Pickering but I'm in Mississauga all the time so traveling the distance is not a problem if someone is willing to help me out. I'm not too familiar with the codes and what not so I'm not sure what other info would help. It was in an accident previously, hit on the front right side. The traction control (Circle with ! in it), ABS lights are on all the time and the brake light flashes when the parking brake is not on.

Anyone free on Sunday evening or Monday to take a look?

If its a simple matter of changing the brake pads, how much does something like that cost? If I buy the pads from Audi, would a regular mechanic be able to change it or is there something special that Audi has to do? I was told that it could be costly cause you normally have to change more than just the pad.

Sunday afternoon is possible for me. But you will have to come to GTA....the most West I am willing to go is Yorkdale...

It is hard to say what is wrong with the car. The warning lights, when lite together, tell you another thing rather than isolated problems from different components of the car.

Normally the dealership will change the rotors and the pads at the same time because it is their procedure. It is the rotors and the labor (the dealership charge) that costs an arm and a leg. It really depends on how worn your rotors are.

If you need to change out both, it might be a good time to change aftermarket rotors and breakpads as well. With aftermarket breakpads you will probably lose the break sensor (but breaks squeek like crazy when they are worn anyways).

I say do the job with a trusty mechanic (mind you it is not a difficult job) IF it is really your breaks, and you will save a lot of money.

All in all, we won't be able to know what is wrong until we scan the vehicle.

Thanks Chris, I've sent you a PM to setup a time and place on Sunday.

Would you know of a good place to buy some aftermarket pads and rotors for a good price? I've seen some on ebay but not sure if it is worth the risk especially with the high shipping and duty costs.

well its not the pads; that has a different warning.

it is definetly the abs sensors or the control unit. see if you can connect to the module (control unit) with a vag-com; if you can then it's just the sensor(s) gone bad (i think) but if you can't connect to it then it's a faulty unit that needs to be repaired/replaced.

that's where i'm at right now... i didn't think the problem still goes on in 2002 or newer models (mine is a 99 A6)

Well I would just like to take this moment to thank Itchy for meeting up with me and Vag'n my car. Its good to see that there are still decent people in the world who like helping others. There is someone on ebay selling an ESP module that is the exact same model that is in my car now for 175 US. Is it worth getting another module or does anyone think that the ABS and ESP lights are on for another reason? The brakes rotors and/or pads need changing if that helps.

I remember all those issues were fixed in the end.
