    Audi A5 Turbo Issues

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi all,

So I own a 2010 Audi A5 with the 2.0T engine and the TIP transmission, I purchased the car at about 68k miles and now it's around 83k. The car had been great for majority of my ownership until as of recently the turbo has been making strange noises. I've read multiple posts on various websites about a similar issue but no one posted any solution or diagnostics. I had brought the car to the dealership and explained to them the issue; the car when boosting doesn't create a smooth turbo spool up like you'd normally hear in a forced induction vehicle, yet instead the air sounds like it rushes in, the car takes a pause as if taking a breath (not sure how else to describe it aside from that) and then more air into the turbo followed by the very sharp, choppy whistle. On top of that, the tachometer flutters around certain RPM's whenever the air sounds like it's taking a pause, the tach will drop slightly and then continue to increase. Which I know should not be the case. The dealership couldn't help me diagnose the problem and said that it was normal for these cars to be experiencing these issues, but I have a warranty on the car so if it was a faulty turbo or if the bearings have become loose, then I don't understand why it wouldn't be fixed? The car isn't throwing a CEL for this issue, and I have yet to replace the DV from the stock diaphragm style. I ordered the Revision D DV but after doing more research, it doesn't seem like that'll solve this issue once it's in place. I'll attach a clip of what it sounds like, it's kinda hard to capture it on video but the clip should give you the gist of the issue. (In the clip I have the CEL on because I just got a HFC installed and it is not yet tuned, I checked with VAGCom and it said cat inefficiency so this is unrelated to the issue I am having).

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

EDIT: So I just received my car back today from a local tuning shop after dropping it off to see if they could diagnose the issue for me. The tech's had said that the original DV valve was in perfect shape so they didn't bother replacing it to the new Revision D valve (which I was kind of pissed that they took out the old one and put it back in and didn't even bother just swapping it out with the new one, but oh well.). On top of that, the guy I was working with had said that it could potentially be the waste gate not being used to dealing with the volume of air from the intake and high flow cat installed in my car. The only issue is is that the sounds and problems I thought I was experiencing were happening prior to those parts being installed. The tech said that the cars boost curve was normal for what it should be and that everything was matching up to be fine although he did hear the noise and said that it was probably the waste gate and that they were unsure how to fix it 100%. There were no boost leaks, nothing. Any help would be greatly appreciated because now Audi couldn't help me and now this shop couldn't either so I'll leave it to the Audi guru's on this forum.

    i just put a PVC on my 2011 A5 2.0t (52k miles)
    took less than 1 hour...

    drivabilty greatly improved.
have not had it out on the highway yet, but in town it is a big difference.

was not getting any of the odd noises you describe, but that would depend on where, if any, leaks are....

After doing some more research it looks like it could be a possibility, but why wouldn't Audi or the shop that I brought it to see this? I'm not really experiencing a rough idle, it just seems like the pressure held is irregular. The DV is fine which is what I thought would lead to the issues I'm having but I guess not. I'll give this a try cause I figure why not

Not sure if its been asked or youve done this.

But in manual mode does it do the same thing? as in you shifting and driving the rpms by yourself?

I have a similar issue to this, but I have a 6 speed transmission. Just replaced the DV. Looking into the PCV now.

Actually in sport and in tip mode it doesn't happen at all or nearly as noticeable

So I checked out the PCV in my car today and it doesn't appear to have any cracks or damage to it, but there was a slight tear on the hose leading away from it (included in pictures). Not really sure what to think.

Was your car throwing a code before you replaced it or did you just switch it because drivability had decreased? Because my car isn't throwing any codes related to this but I'm thinking about just replacing it to see what happens

No codes on mine, boost felt almost like it was in and out and kinda falling on its face. Its good preventative maintenance either way.

mine thru a P0299 a few weeks back.
my mechanic puled the DV for inspection, checked for leaks in rest of system, found no issues.
after resetting, it thru the P0299 two days later.

since then, i have replaced the PVC myself.
but have not had the idiot light reset.

just dropped it off this morning at my shop, actually.
Nate (my mechanic) is going to install a GFP DV+ diverter valve (i do not crawl under cars any more) & reset the idiot light.

if this cures the code tripping i will not know for sure which fix did the trick for me.
one thing is definite, the improved drivability with the new PVC is significant.

Would you be able to provide me with a link or part number for the replacement PCV you installed? I was browsing through ECSTuning's website for one but they all said they were designed for TSI engines not TFSI's so I just wanna make sure I'm getting the right part. Thanks again for all of your help.

I installed new PCV, and I wanted to wait a little to give my impressions on it in case the initial impressions were just placebo, but I must say the difference in driveability is like night and day. The car felt so sluggish and as if it weren't even boosting before, but now it runs like brand new. I would highly recommend this to anyone who is experiencing similar issues as myself. Although, the driving and boost has improved, the whistle noise on the turbo is still there so I'm starting to think that's due to the turbo muffler since that's the only place that air can really escape within the loop. I've had both Audi and a local tuning shop by me confirm that the boost levels are where they should be prior to the PCV being installed so there isn't a boost leak anywhere and that's the only spot I can think of that's left. Anyways, thanks for the help from you guys, it's greatly appreciated.

    that is way cool!

for me, it was definitely the DV being the worse of two evils....but i know the PCV valve was bad cuz of the change after replacing it.

turns our the old DV did have a tear in the silicone after all...
this GFP replacement is fricken gr8!
in-town drivability is outstanding.....tons more giddy-up from standstill & low speed.
turbo is spooled up all thru the the rev range, now..
i highly recommend this upgrade to anyone with 2.0T

    but.....idiot light is back on.
will get code read next week....

I did install it myself, very easy install once you get past the intimidation factor of working on the engine (I'm not very experienced with operating on my vehicles when it comes to that). I ordered it from ECS Tuning's website after contacting Jacob (previously mentioned in the thread) and he told me the exact one that I would need for my vehicle.

I had brought my car to a local shop near me for a boost leak test prior to posting on here because that's what I thought the issue was initially and to have them replace the DV, but they took out the old DV and said nothing was wrong with it even though I'm sure there is and put the old DV back in rather than just installing the new one. I was very frustrated and didn't even bother arguing with them so I'm either going to have to attempt to put it in myself or just bite the bullet and waste another $100 to have it installed professionally.

    Update on this thread:
It's been a while since I've posted but since last post I've changed the DV as well as installed a turbo muffler delete, but the tach still seems to flutter. The issue has definitely been slightly resolved but the sound isn't exactly smooth like you'd expect from a turbo. Any help would be greatly appreciated as this is driving me absolutely nuts

Also I checked the wastegate actuator rod and there's no play at all so I'm really not sure what it could be
