Audio - Anyone have experience installing a Line Out Converter?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I've installed an aftermarket head unit into my RS4.

As expected, there is a decent amount of hum. Especially when the headlights are on. I ordered the Scosche SLC4 Line Out converter which I read somewhere will help.

I am curious if anyone has installed it yet. Below are the configuration options and I think I need to do config D.

If I understand the diagram, I need to find the AMP (Rear passenger wheel well?) And intercept the wires going into it. Pull them from the amp and hook them into this unit. Then get some new RCA cables and connect them from the Scosche back into the amp. Does that sound accurate?

Here are some additional photos of the setup

I just went through this all. I find it hard to believe that your s4 has the Audi amp and sub? I would think the S4 is Bose?

I actually bought that very same converter- as all as the one input to two output filter as well. They both failed. I ended up replace the factory 8" sub with a 12" sub in the same spot- (I cut the hole bigger.). Because I replaced the sub, I also replaced the rear door speakers, by doing this my sound quality is just leagues above the old Audi stock system. I also replaced my head unit which only powers my front speakers. My line from head unit for my remote to amp now remotes the amp and the amp powers sub, and rear. I ended up re-running all new 16 gauge speaker lines to the rear speakers from the amp, I actually ran all my lines under the interior peices of the car, and I actually took the rear door panels off and ran the wire through the boot between the cabin and the actual door. Im not going to lie- it was a PITA. Im making it sound simple, but in order to do this, I had to remove the center interior piece that blocks access to that boot, and in order to get that piece out of the way, a few other pieces have to be removed. I tried everything that you are doing and failed after hours and hours of guessing and trying to figure it out. But Im actually more happy I did it this way because of the sound quality I have now.
I should also note that even though that I replaced the whole sound system, you can not see the sub, or amp, or wires, I pretty much started by stripping the whole back end of the cars interior off including trunks- and bolted the amp in the right hand side of the wheelwell crevice, under the trunk liner, and the subwoofer I fabricated into the same hole Audi put the factory one. I'm pretty proud that mine looks stock yet has great and clear aftermarket sound quality W/O sacrificing a huge 1" sq. FT box in the trunk taking up space with wires running everywhere.

Does your aftermarket head unit not have pre-outs (RCA low-level outputs)? That is what you are supposed to use to connect to the factory Audi amplifier input. I would only use a Line Out Converter if there was absolutely no pre-outs on the audio source device. And in that case, I would definitely not install the Line Out Converter near the factory amplifier. Doing it that way means you have modified wiring both in the dash AND at the amp location. Don't do that. Just do it all behind the radio in the dash. Do your Line Out conversion (if necessary) and connect to the necessary wires right behind the radio.

If you still have a buzz, I'd probably try a "ground loop isolator" on the RCA low-level signals.

What you are doing is pretty standard stereo install stuff. So you should be able to find a local stereo shop to help you. They do this stuff every day.

Thanks guys. Does the same apply if I have the Bose system? This is an RS4 and I THINK it's a Bose system.

I thought the Bose system has an amp. But to be honest, I'm a bit fuzzy on all of the Audi audio options (Bose, symphony ii, etc) and what components each of them have. On top of that, I am not sure how to identify which system I have.

I am headed home now to try to identify my system and identify if the head unit has pre-outs (now that ive learned what they are).

    Thanks!

The manual will come with its own broucher for the audio if it's bose. Also it'll say bose on the speaker panels. You can un--do the trunk liner and just look at the amp it will say bose or Audi. But I'm pretty sure All S-lines would come equipped with a certain radio/system. Most likely bose so I would just google it as well. From my research it does matter. The wiring is completely different.

Confirmed that it is bose and that the head unit does have pre-outs which are hooked up.
