    Engine replacement/swap flywheel question

    Hey gang, Today is a gut pain day here.
    My beautiful '07 A4 Quattro's engine broke in the wee hours this morning.
    Since it had a moment of complete seizure, I'm betting the 2.0 BWT lump will need to be replaced, not just repaired.
    Since this is my only car and I need it running to earn a living, time is critical or I would wait to see if my engine can just be rebuilt.

    I've been looking around a bit and I see lots of BWT's for Auto Trans Quattro-s but not many for my 6SP MT.
    I did try a search of posts, but I guess I'm not clear enough with my search criteria.
    Can I just swap the auto's flex plate for the manual's flywheel.
    It would certainly open up a larger range of options.

    I know that is the case with VW's, but I also know that is not the case for all make's.

    No, you cannot use an auto engine in a manual. You can however, use an engine from a CVT car or a DSG transverse car (GTI/A3/CC/GLI) if you swap some parts over.

    okay, what is different about the quattro automatic BWT compared to the manual one, other than the flex plate??
    that way I can back check some of the folk selling these used engines.

    Also is there a solid source for a rebuilt BWT engine.

    The crank is different where you insert the pilot bearing. The tiptronic engine crankshaft will not accept the bearing.

    The more abundant choice would be a VW 2.0T fwd engine. You can use either a DSG or manual version. All you need to do is swap oil pan & oil pick up screen from yours and your to go

    I thought the VW 2.0 used cast pistons not the forged ones in the AUDI.

    Use a BPG code from a VW. It has forged pistons if thats one of the things your ing for.

    VW BPG code are a lot harder to find though as opposed to BPY and there is no real advantage of forged pistons provided your under 400chp

    No useful warning, just a quickly double flash on the display about oil pressure, then it came on continuously and then the motor seized.

    Since the closest shops first estimate is over 9k to swap in another motor in, I have not wanted to give them a chance to make more money from me.
    If anybody knows a shop in Tallahassee that can do the swap for less or a spot I can rent their lift, I could do the swap myself and post mortem the lump in the engine bay now.

    In the mean time it seems like it is time to shop fro another A4, cause I can't not earn.

    My A4 original BPG motor went from failed oil pump- replacement motor was a BWT. My car is a 6MT, the BWT replacement came from an 08 Cab Automatic CVT trans NOT the Tiptronic, the TIP uses a different crank from what I understand. The regular automatic is good to go- the pilot bearing had to be replaced and I belive that was the extent of it.

    Also from the previous owner if anyone cares- told me that his oil pressure light came on and off for three days straight and he ignored it because it would go off, so he chalked it up to a faulty sensor, when finally on the third day the motor seized. This one wasn't like "Oh, a light" and then failed right away, it was three days of ignoring it and finally went.

    You could also go with the gold r motor, it comes with a few more items many search for in our motors. I listed all those motors somewhere recently but I cannot find the thread. These will get you more power right off the get go as they are tuned better then ours out of the factory. Comes with BPG pistons looks to be better rods, and I believe k04 turbo. If I can find the complete listing I will post it for you.

    Yup, No real warning... I suspect the oil pump failed and I can't find any reference to it getting replaced in the service history I have on it.
    I won't be able to postmortem the engine, until I have a car that I can earn in...
    Then I can pull the seized lump and see how bad the damage is.

    That would be great,
    I have too much invested in mine to just let it go, and parting it out is not a good option (lack of work and storage space).

    The oil pumps can fail in various ways. If you're lucky, you have time to save the engine. That's not always the case.

    Can the oil pumps fail on their own? Or is it usually caused by a clogged pickup?

    -clogged pickup causing low pressure, which causes shafts to seize
    -balance shaft coupling fails and drive gear is disconnected, which causes low pressure which causes shafts to seize
    -CF fails and sends metal bits through oil pump which causes shafts to seize
    -CF fails and metal bits damage pump rotor and excessive clearances cause low pressure which... you know the drill
    -drive chain breaks which could be a cause or a result of the shafts seizing

    IMO, the seized balance shafts are the effect and not the cause. It's a toss up as to whether the head is taken out or not.

    Ive oil pump balance shafts seized with clean pick up screens & or no busted thru cam followers. It also mite have been after sometime those components was thou idk

    Well, they do spin at twice the speed of the engine, so poor oil change habits can play a factor also. I just think they get a lot of hate for stuff that isn't their fault.

    To tell you the truth Adam.... I beat the out of my motor ing wot alot. And knock on wood my oil pump has been . This is why I never did the balance shaft deletes on any of the one's Ive owned. So I think your rite as far as the design of the oil pumps are not as a people think they are

    I better baby the black car until I sell it lol. But if the condition of the cam bearings is any indication, it should be just fine.
