What are the US laws on front no. plates?

I've been looking at pictures of some of your cars and i've noticed that some cars have 'standard' plinths (No recess for plates), some have a standard plinth with 2 horizontal chrome mouldings and others have a recess for a square plate

Do you have to have different size plates depending on what state the vehicle is registered?

US plates are all the same sizes, 6"x12". Some state required front plates, some don't.

some states also let you "get away with it" if there are no holes to attach the plate with.

lol. that's what my whole family relies on.

In cali, its the law to have a front plate. If cops want to be a dick, they will cite you. I got cited once and the car was PARKED infront of my house!(because of street sweeping). lol

The front plate law is very flaky. I have been running without a front plate since(my 99.5 A4 and that was in 2003). I have never been pulled over or even questioned about the front plate on the car. And once my new car arrives i'm still going to run without a front plate. I know this was not the qestion, but just my view on front plate.

As for size, i don't think your saposta modify the size of the plate. I though have seen plates on "ricer" cars that have been cut and made smaller, but other than that, no idea.

My state requires a front plate, but I run a EU style plate. I had the parts imported from Germany. The US plate looks like arse on the B7 IMO, because it hangs down over the lower grille. I had the plate custom made with my Washington state number:

Had it this way for probably 7-8 months and haven't had a problem. The only issue is that technically a cop could pull me over at any time for it, so it keeps me a little more honest than I probably would be otherwise.

Oh, and I have also had at least 4 people come up to me in parking lots or at gas stations and start speaking to me in German. And they always want to tell me how "WA" is for Waldeck, which is in the northern part of Germany and that my Munich regional seal is incorrect. Then I point out that it is my Washington state plate number.

There are two part numbers for the grill insert. Dealers in states that require front plates get cars with the mount; dealers in other states get the the chrome strips.

My state doesn't require a front plate, but the dealer has a few of the alternate inserts on-hand, so he can hang his logo on the front of showroom cars, etc.

Actually, dealers have to specify either one of the plates, and that is what they get, independent of the state they are in. We have over 50% of our inventory with filler plates (this is SoCal!!!), even though front plates are required here.

My State, Oregon, also requires front plates by law - however - being the gangsta I am, I've run without one for 9 years now without a problem.
