Audi A7/S7 Recall and Stop Sale Orders (May 2017)

I discovered this recall by an interesting fact: it is forbidden, by law, to sell a new car currently under a safety recall. It's the motor vehicle safety act. Someone else ended up buying the first S7 I was looking at because I procrastinated too dang long. But, I was about to pull the trigger on another and got hit with this. I even offered a waiver or to release liability on the contract so I can take delivery immediately. No go as it's a federal crime to sell it I guess.

So, any new A7, S7 and I presume RS7 affected by the recall and sitting on any dealer's lot right now cannot be sold until it is fixed. Audi's official recall notice states that letters will be going out to affected owners at the end of June, probably because there are no parts yet.

Well, if you're shopping for a new A7/S7 right now, you're SOL...

Oh well, patience is a virtue, or so they say.

Volkswagen is recalling nearly 17,700 A7 vehicles in the U.S. to address a problem with their airbags. According to documents from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, some of the car's airbags may not deploy as intended.

The devices in question are head curtain airbags, supplied by Key Safety Systems (which is, for what it's worth, the likely buyer of troubled Japanese airbag manufacturer, Takata). NHTSA explains that due to the way that the airbags were produced, they "may not unfold properly during deployment. This may result in an increased risk of injury to an unbelted passenger in a crash where the head curtain airbag deploys."

Today's recall affects Audi A7 vehicles from the 2015, 2016, and 2017 models years. A total of 17,694 cars registered in the U.S. will need to be repaired.

Owners of those vehicles will receive recall notices by mail around June 29, 2017. At that time, they'll be able to take their A7s to Audi dealers, who will replace the car's head curtain airbags at no charge.

If you own one of these vehicles and have further questions, you're encouraged to contact Audi customer service at 1-800-253-2834 and ask about recall #69R2. You can also call NHTSA's Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 and ask about safety campaign ##17V293000.

Yep I posted about this last week. Test drove a CPO S7 for two days and then they refused to sell it to me.

    Yep that's it.

Kind of sucks for the dealers having to sit on inventory. I wonder if they get compensated for any stop sale orders?

It's funny you mention that because I tried arguing my case to take immediate delivery based on that detail of the recall "unbelted..."

It's against the law to NOT wear a seat belt so, unless the recall description is wrong, it shouldn't impact me.

    Didn't work...

My salesman says it's not a problem for my S7 arriving in a few weeks expected delivery end of June. I am not sure if he really knows or is just being optimistic.

Haven't spoken to my SA but did recieve word that my vehicle is on the vessel and should be arriving by June 15th-ish. I'd be really dissapointed if after all this wait, delivery of my vehichle would be delayed. Not that the recall doesn't concern me but I'd hope Audi would be quick to find a solution in order to move cars affected off the lot.

I read the NHTSA detailed report and I think it mentioned the supplier addressed this on or about March of this year. So if your car was made after that date, it probably wouldn't be impacted.

If you know the VIN you can check if it's affected here:

Yeah, I know the "Recall/hold" all too well! My car has been sitting at the Port for 6 weeks today... with no end in sight! At this point, it might be a smarter move for me to not take delivery and order an 18! C'mon Takata!!

Thanks for the info. Production of my vehicle was completed on May 12th so hopefully i'm in the green. Despite having requested to be registered in the owner in waiting program and being told that I have been, I've received no emails so I don't have my vin.

Awesome thanks for that. I checked mine and it says no open recalls!

I also checked the CPO I tried to buy and it does show the recall.

    Very happy right now.

It does effect both. Cars made after march this year seem to have the fix but cars prior can't be sold by dealers right now.
