    b6 2.7t swap. starting problems

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hi. i did a 2.7 swap. did all wiring for starter as my b6 had been set with clutch relay. I cant even get starter to try when i turn the key. literally nothing not even a click. i rechecked wiring and even tried taking relay out. still nothing. i tried crossing terminals on starter and it engages and rolls over fine. does anyone have any idea as to why nothing is working? I also ran vcds on the acc/start auth. nothing comes up. cant read controller. thank you for any help you can give.

Do you have wiring diagrams or did you follow the guide here on audizine?
I had the same problems as you when following the wiring guide from this website. Had to rewire everything accoring to the diagrams afterwards.

I can tell you if you followed mine its correct, ive used it on an s4 as well as 3 different types of a4's if there was an issue its most likely because the additional connections under the chart was not followed. To the op do you have power to the supply side of the starter relay? Also side note the starter relay is not in my wiring diagram, its bypassed but can easily be added.

blitz i followed your write up on the wiring. i tried with starter relay and also after taking it out. i have power going in. i tried crossing starter with screw driver and it engages and rolls the engine over.

Not sure if you tried this already...remove the relay & try putting a jumper from 30 to 87 wires. I believe wires are Red & Red/Gray heavier gauge than the others...

see if it tries to Start. This bypasses the Clutch pedal Switch

This^, quick question did this chassis start as an auto or manual? Also keep in mind that there is no starter relay unless you added it to the harness from the b6 harness. So you have to run the wire from the b6 plug to the starter relay coil(switched from ground at the clutch switch) and supply a 12v on the other side of the coil. This allowes power through the relay contacts which should have 12v on one side when the key is turned to start. The other contact then goes to the starter.

don't know if this has anything to do with it. when I used vcds I tried scanning the 05-acc/start auth. it is coming up with cant find controller. could this be the problem? if so can someone please help me locate that to work

Well to make sure its not the relay jump the contacts like Bob Marley suggested, remove said relay and jump the starter input to the starter wire and see if it cranks

im confused about the relay you are talking about. is it the relay that gets triggered from clutch switch? or is there another relay under the dash? if it is the relay that gets triggered from the clutch(white connector pin 14) I have already taken the relay out and joined the wires direct.

and you have power coming from T10a BROWN Pin4 red/black on the b6 plug with the key turned to start? If not you need to trace that back and find out why, that is supplied from post 30 under the dash to the key cylinder then to the body plugs.

also can it be the fact that vcds cant find the acc/start auth. controller?

are the keys a match to the dash? also it doesn't matter as the 2.7 has no immo.

The clutch switch Provides the Ground for the Clutch Relay (Black Body Plug engine bay).

When you fully depress the Clutch pedal it completes the circuit & closes the relay contacts and Allows +12v to pass from 30 post to 87 to your starter 50 post... if you're relay is bad...jumping 30 to 87 would reveal this... if it still doesn't start...then you can start trouble shooting the +12v ignition up to that point

then the issues is you wire to the starter, you have to trace it out. If you jumped the relay correctly then it should turn over as long as the connection to the starter is good.

    k. I have power coming thru t10a brown pin 4. I am not going to trace the wire and I am just going to run a new one. how much power is supposed to run down the line? can I run it thru a relay from post 30 in ebox with the t10a brown pin 4 triggering it?

I cant remember off hand what gauge wire it is but that wire is suppose to supply enough current to trigger the solenoid without needing a relay, the interlock relay is just a safety measure so you can't start the car in gear.

im only asking that and thinking of that because instead of trying to trace the problem in that wire, or even running a new wire along the side of the harness and actually having to secure it. i was going to run a wire over to the battery and put the relay there then just run the wire down from there to the starter.

Unplug the MAF and see if it runs better. Also could be a big vacuum leak. I assume you've checked fault codes.

What do the timing values show in VCDS, block 093?

    Fault 01592 - no info on ross-tech.
00819 - High Pressure Sensor (G65) - possible bad pressure switch near the condenser. Not the problem.
01317 - Control Module in Instrument Cluster (J285) - ECU can't talk to the cluster. I assume this is normal on a 2.7 swap?

I highly doubt the airbag codes would cause this, but hopefully someone else can confirm. I would think if anything the airbag faults would prevent the car from starting at all.

Which leaves the Outside Air Temp Sensor. This is certainly a possible cause, although it's hard to tell from a keyboard. Basically the ECU gets confused as to what the air temperature should be, air:fuel ratios go crazy, and it stalls out. At least that's my guess. Have you tried with the MAF unplugged?

thanks. i was actually thinking the same thing about the outside air temp last night. i dont have the front clip on the car which would be why it is not getting a signal. when i get off work tonight im going to put the front end on and hope for the best

none of that will affect the engine starting including that temp sensor the only ones thats matter are the coolant temp and iat as far as temps go. Start with the basics, does it have spark (needs a test light)? does it have fuel? does it have compression, figure out which is wrong trace that system backwards, I'm going to gues something with wiring.
Never argue with an idiot, they'll bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Ive been driving with the outside air temp sensor ripped off for years. Its just 2 wires hanging there (well, taped and tucked up).

Dash reads 10 deg. higher, but never any starting or running rich, or any kind of issues.

I would think the ecu has to talk to the cluster.

Any other 2.7 swaps showing that code?

I'm at a loss... Something legit is wrong and there's no sign of it.
