Summary for those who don't like to read, aka tldr:
Purchased the car in August of 2016 with 210k on the odometer. It had been in a minor accident and the timing was off. After fixing, the 1-2 collar locked up on a casual downshift on my first real drive, less than 50 miles into my ownership. The car has been down since September for a variety of reasons unrelated to the car, but now has a freshly rebuilt trans, and stage 3 goodies.
Long version:
This car popped up on craigslist while searching for an S4 last summer. I didn't mind taking on a bit of a project given that my current circumstances leave me with some time to kill. This particular car had been in a minor collision. The hood took the brunt of the damage, but other damage included a small crack in the bumper (which had been repaired by the time I viewed it), broken headlight tabs, and a damaged radiator.

When I went to check out the car, it started right up but ran rough and would not rev off of idle. I wasn't sure what the exact cause was, but considering the price and the fact I’d worked on 2.7Ts in the past, I wasn't concerned. I struck a deal and came back the next day with a trailer to bring her home, where I was able to dig into the car.

I pulled off the front clip and quickly found the problem that was preventing the car from revving. Somehow a few large plastic chunks (source unknown) had become wedged in the throttle body boot, which was physically preventing the throttle valve from opening. I'm still dumbfounded as to how that occurred, besides the obvious explanation of a bonehead previous owner), but after removing the few chunks, the engine ran about 85%. While the car was now drivable, I had some misfires on cylinders four, five, and six; and after a quick look at the measuring blocks in VCDS, I discovered the timing was off. After ordering the cam bar and crank pin, and replacing the belt, the car was back to full strength with full compression on all cylinders; crisis avoided.
Shortly after replacing the timing belt and radiator, I took the car out for its first real [casual] drive. This is where the fun begins. Less than 50 miles into my ownership, I went for a routine low RPM downshift into second as I approached a stoplight, and the 1-2 collar locked up. Great!! I limped it home in third gear. A 1-2 collar failure was not totally unexpected given the mileage on the car and that it's a known failure point on these cars, I just didn't expect it to happen so quickly.
For a number of reasons unrelated to the car, including a move to a new house, the car has been down ever since the 1-2 collar failure. Build details in the next post!
